We will talk about Messi, his personal life and his professional career in football.
Lionel Andres Messi Cuccittini, known as Leo Messi, is an Argentine soccer player,
considered one of the best in history. He has won a sextet with Barça led by Pep
Guardiola, and more awards including the most recent, the Copa America he won
against Brazil, and the World Cup won against France; in addition to winning the
Ballon d'Or 8 times, as well as other individual awards.

He was born on June 24, 1987, in the city of Rosario, province of Santa Fe. He is
the third child of Jorge Horacio Messi and Celia Maria Cuccittini. He was two older
brothers, Rodrigo and Matías, and a younger sister, María Sol. His paternal family is
of Italian origin, and his maternal grandmother was the one who encouraged him to
dedicate himself to soccer, for which he has thanked her by dedicating many of his
goals to her. He started when he was just four years old with the modest Abanderado
Grandoli, a team from a neighborhood near his home. And in 1994 he entered the
youth ranks of Newell’s Old Boys, of the Argentine First Division.

At the age of eleven he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, but despite
this he continued to strive and improve as a player, arousing the interest of other
clubs.

His big opportunity came in 2000 when he traveled to Barcelona to play a test match
in the children’s category. He scored six goals and at halftime they had to change
his team to balance the game. Seeing his skill, Barca did not want to let him escape
and even agreed to pay for the treatment for his illness.
After passing brilliantly through the different youth categories, he made his debut in
the first team at just 16 years old in 2003. Although he continued to belong to the
second team, he participated in his first matches in the Spanish First Division and in
the Champions League, becoming one of the players youngest to compete in these
competitions. In 2005 the first titles came, the League Championship and the Super
Cup, and he moved to the first team permanently.

In 2004 he also made his debut with the Argentine national team, in the under-20
category. He immediately took over the reins of the team and led it to win the World
Cup the following year, also being the best player in the tournament and top scorer.
Voices began to emerge that compared him to the legendary star Diego Armando
Maradona 1960, also Argentine. Back in Spain Messi Continued to surprise. In his
first “classico” against Real Madrid, his team won 0-3 and left the rival stadium
applauded. He was named the best young player in Europe with the Golden Boy
Award, and won his first Champions League in 2005-06, although an injury did not
allow him to play in the final.

The following seasons he established himself as a fixture in Barcelona’s starting


eleven, winning the League and Super Cup again in 2006, and impressing with his
acrobatic plays and impossible goals.

One of the highlights of his career came in the summer of 2008, when he won the
gold medal with his team at the Beijing Olympic Games. But it was not the only one.
The following year he won the 2008-09 Champions League again, but this time as
the protagonist, playing in the final and scoring the second goal. Furthermore, that
same 2009, his club won all the national and international titles it played for, setting
a historical record known as “the sextet”.

Leo was at the top of world football and was recognized when he was awarded his
first Ballon d’Or in 2009. What followed was a dazzling career of more than fifteen
years with Barcelona, in which he won twenty-four national titles 10 Leagues. He
scored six hundred and thirty-four goals in seven hundred and thirty-one games,
reaching an average close to one goal per game. However, he did not have the same
luck with his national team. The closets they came to touching glory was when they
played in the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil against Germany. But after
finishing the match with a 0-0 draw, the Germans took the win with a goal in overtime
Götze in the 114th minute, leaving a devastated Messi wrapped in tears.

After two other tough on penalties in the Copa America finals against Chile in 2015
and 2016, Messi couldn’t take it anymore and announced his retirement from the
national team. But he thought better of it and shortly after decided to return for the
2018 FIFA World Cup Russia qualifiers, he wanted to continue trying to take his
country to the top of world football.

In his personal life, Leo was married in 2017 to Antonela Roccuzzo, his lifelong
girlfriend whom he met when he has was only nine years old. They have three
children, Thiago 2012, Mateo 2015 and Ciro 2018. Additionally, in 2007 he created
the Leo Messi Foundation, to help children and adolescents in situations of social
exclusion. And in 2010 he was named Unicef Goodwil Ambassador.

Throughout his career, Messi has maintained a special rivalry with the Portuguese
Cristiano Ronaldo for being recognized as the best player of his generation. The
truth is that the technical quality and numbers of both are beastly.
Shortly after, Barcelona scouts contacted the Messi family and arranged for Lionel
to travel to Spain to try out for the Blaugranas once in Catalonia and after many tests,
the Culé club signed the Argentine, who was only 13 years old, covering his
hormonal treatment in its entirety and hiring his father to work at the club and thus
be able to bring the boy. During the following years Messi played with the different
divisions youth of Barcelona and later with the c and b teams of the blaugrana with
which he showed his talent and scored 89 goals in 97 games for a monstrous
average f points per game. Finally, the 2004-2005 season arrived and Messi would
have his first appearance with the team. Big team Starting with the preseason until

history in his first seasons with Barcelona under the direction of the goals. They
began to arrive and the dumbbell with Ronaldinho’s zamba was a delight for fans
and rivals.
