9.1 UNLOADING
• Unloading of the pipe should be done on a level site and be controlled to avoid colliding with
other pipe sections. Care should be taken to avoid damage, especially to the spigots and bells.
• Caution should be exercised to ensure personnel is out of the path of the pipe as it moved.
• Lifting devices such as slings, chains, or cables should be placed around the pipe or arranged so
that the pipe is lifted in a horizontal position at all times. Padding should be provided between
the pipe and the lifting device so that the lifting device could not be chipped or damaged the
pipe.
• If the pipe has to be moved after unloading, the sections should be rolled or lifted, and should
never be dragged. Pipe sections should not be rolled over rough or rocky ground
9.2 STORAGE
• All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the manufacturer to prevent
damage and deterioration.
• The pipe should be stored in a safe place near the site as per Instructions
• The bottom layer should be placed on a level base, on timbers supporting the barrel at either
end. Each layer of bell and spigot pipe should be arranged so that bells are at the same end.
• The bells in the next layer should be at the opposite end and projecting beyond the spigot of
the section in the lower layer. Where only one layer is being stockpiled, the bell and spigot ends
should alternate between adjacent pipe sections.
• Rubber gaskets shall be stored in an air-conditioned room, preferably in boxes or sacks.
• Damaged goods shall be marked and removed from site. Pipes shall be handled and stored as
per manufacturers recommendations.
• After completion of the preliminary original ground level by GPS system the area shall be
marked in grid system. Before commencing this work all underground and existing services and
obstruction are clearly marked and dealt with approved method statement
• Surveyor shall ensure that all survey equipment is calibrated and having valid calibration
certificate and he shall also ensure that the pipe laying is done to the require line and level.
• Survey check Report/Other relevant data shall be recorded.
• Original ground level for the whole construction site will be surveyed and recorded, after the
completion of the daily joint survey, the data collected will be printed in hard copies for joint
signature, Work shall only be commenced in area surveyed where survey sheet are jointly
signed. After establishing full survey record, plan will be prepared and submitted for approval.
• Work location shall be designated well ahead according to program to enable achieving the
planned production.
• Existing services shall be located by trial excavation; they shall be clearly marked at site.
10.1.2 Preliminary
• One set of relevant approved shop drawings, sketches etc. indicating the setting out details,
levels etc. Shall be made available at the site of work for verifying & inspection prior to
commencement of pipe laying. All the existing utilities to be confirmed and marked by using
trial pits excavation.
• Verify the survey points established as per Drawings and to ensure that all reference points are
found intact without any damage or removed.
• Ensure that trench formation is dry and free from obstructions, depressions, debris, loose soil,
stones etc. Dewatering if required shall meet the requirements.
• Ensure that formation is compacted to the true line, level, and gradient as per specification.
• WIR shall be submitted in the approved format 24 hours prior to inspection of any activity and
be approved by the consultant.
• Mobilize the required materials, plant, equipment, and manpower as required to ensure a
prompt start & completion of work as per project schedule.
• All materials shall be inspected (MIR) prior to use for installation and any damaged material
shall be identified and stored separately.
• Ensure that all necessary PTW are obtained before starting work (Municipality, Traffic Office,
Stc, …... etc)
• Generally, the width of the trench should be the minimum dimension compatible with safe
working and the satisfactory laying, jointing and bedding of the pipe.
• The cover height of all pipes shall not be less than 1.00 mm measured from top of the pipe to
the finished grade level or as shown in the approved drawing.
• Where trenches are required to be deeper than the general depth mentioned the trench shall
be dug to a required depth with a gradual slope necessary for proper laying of the pipeline.
• Pipeline shall not be closer than 300mm to the other pipeline services or structures.
• The trench width depends on the nature of ground, depth, and pipe size. The clear width of the
trench at any level shall he as the approved drawings.
• In all cases trench shall be excavated sufficiently to ensure efficient laying and jointing of pipes.
• Pipe bedding and surround material for DI Pipes shall be 15 cm in case of sand and 25 cm for case
of crushed rock.
• All bedding & surround material shall be subjected to prior approval of the engineer.
• Pipe surround material shall be wetted and lightly tamped or compacted in place.
All excavated materials shall be used in the backfill, unless the material is found to be
unsuitable.
▪ All suitable excavated material not directly incorporated in the work shall be stockpiled for
re-use in areas approved by the Engineer.
▪ Unsuitable materials must be removed and disposed.
▪ Any temporary storage alongside of the trench excavation shall be to stable slopes and
heights and deposited in a manner to avoid any damage and to cause as little
inconvenience as possible.
▪ The screening of excavated trench material will not be permitted on site without the
written approval of the Engineer.
▪ Backfill material shall be compacted to at least 90% MDD, as determined by BS 1377: Part
4; Method 3.5/3.6. 1.
o In situ density test shall be carried out to BS 1377: Part 9; Method 2.2. 2.
