a depth of not less than 15 cm from the bottom of the pipe in the case of Excavation in sandy soil,
and not less than 20 cm in the case of Excavation in rocky soil, in accordance with the
specifications and approved profiles with cleaning the pits, removing waste, cleaning and
sweeping the site is dusty according to the technical specifications.
• The sides of the excavation are supported at depths greater than 2 meters or depending on the
conditions of the site and the type of soil on the site. In case of depth exceeding 2 meters and the
presence of collapsed soil, Side Supporting is used for of the pits in an appropriate manner.
• The Excavation level is handed over to the consultant. From ST 00+00 to ST 00+00

11.2 Pipe Trench:

• Generally, the width of the trench should be the minimum dimension compatible with safe
working and the satisfactory laying, jointing and bedding of the pipe.
• The cover height of all pipes shall not be less than 1.00 mm measured from top of the pipe to
the finished grade level or as shown in the approved drawing.
• Where trenches are required to be deeper than the general depth mentioned the trench shall
be dug to a required depth with a gradual slope necessary for proper laying of the pipeline.
• Pipeline shall not be closer than 300mm to the other pipeline services or structures.
• The trench width depends on the nature of ground, depth, and pipe size. The clear width of the
trench at any level shall he as the approved drawings.
• In all cases trench shall be excavated sufficiently to ensure efficient laying and jointing of pipes.

11.3 PIPE INSTALLATION

11.3.1 Pipe laying

• All pipes shall be sound and clean before laying. When laying is not in progress, including
lunchtime, the open ends of the pipe shall be closed by watertight plugs or other approved means.
Good alignment shall be preserved in laying. The deflection at joints shall not exceed that
recommended by manufacturer. Fittings, in addition to those shown on the Drawings, shall be
provided, if required, for crossing utilities which may be encountered upon opening the trench.
Solid sleeves shall be used only where approved by the Engineer.
• When cutting pipe is required, the cutting shall be done by machine, leaving a smooth cut at
right angles to the axis of the pipe. Cut ends of pipe to be jointed with a bell shall be beveled to
conform to the manufactured spigot end. Cement lining shall be undamaged

11.3.2 Assembly of Push-On Joint

• Using a wire brush and a rag, carefully clean the inside of the socket particularly the gasket
recesses. In particular, remove any deposits of earth, sand, etc. also clean the spigot of the pipe to
be joined and the gasket itself. Check the presence of the chamfer, as well as the absence of any
damage on the spigot of the pipe
• Check the condition of the gasket and insert it into its recess, with the lips pointing towards the
bottom of the socket. Make sure that the gasket is correctly compressed all the way round.
• Coat with lubricating paste recommended and supplied by manufacturing, the spigot end of the
pipe and the exposed surface of the gasket. The gasket recess must not be coated with lubricating
paste, except for small diameter pipes or fitting when problems arise on fitting the gasket.
• Centre the spigot in the socket and hold the pipe in a position by resting it on two wedges of
bedding soil. • Push in the spigot until the first mark disappears inside the socket. The second
mark must still be visible after assembly.
• Check that the gasket is correctly in position by inserting the end of a metal ruler through the
annular spigot and socket gap until it touches the gasket. The ruler must penetrate to the same
depth around the whole circumference.
• Jointing must be done with well aligned pipes. Make sure that the curvature after 10 of 61
assembly does not exceed the permissible angular deflection of particular joint

PMF-012-QUA-004_02 Method Statement (Pipeline Excavation ) 11 of 17

13.3.3 Polyethylene Sleeve
• Polyethylene Sleeves: Protective polyethylene sleeves shall be used with all DI pipes and fittings
to be installed in buried and pipes and fittings must be clean and dry before sleeving and shall be
in accordance with ISO 8180.
• Cut the barrel and join sleeves to the dimensions indicated.
• Before lowering the pipe into the trench, raise it up and slip the pleated sleeving along the
barrel.
• The sleeving must fit in the pipes as tight as possible (importance of the fold and ties). • The
barrel and joint sleeve overlaps must provide total continuity of protection.
• The fold must always be made at the top of the pipes, to limit the risk of damage during
backfilling.
• The minimum nominal thickness of the sleeve shall be 250 microns (0.010 in.) with a maximum
minus tolerance of 10% .

13.3.4 Pipe bedding and surround material:

• Pipe bedding and surround material for DI Pipes shall be 15 cm in case of sand and 25 cm for case
of crushed rock.
• All bedding & surround material shall be subjected to prior approval of the engineer.
• Pipe surround material shall be wetted and lightly tamped or compacted in place.

13.3.5 Thrust block

• Thrust blocks in a pipeline refer to the concrete blocks provided in buried pipelines for
preventing movement and absorb thrust forces. For large buried pipelines, the pressure thrust force
becomes too large that is usually exerted on elbows and tees. Thrust blocks are therefore added in
those regions to avoid the failure of piping components.
• Thrust blocks are needed in underground pipeline directional changes. So, in all the fittings likes
elbows, wyes, Tees, Caps, wherever the pipeline changes the direction. Factors Affecting the Size
of a Thrust Block So, as specified above, there are four parameters required for sizing a thrust
block. Those are:
• Maximum Internal pressure to calculate thrust force
• Pipe Size to calculate pipe cross-sectional area for calculating thrust force.
• Soil bearing load to find out the area required for the thrust block and
• Type of fitting (& Degree of angle in case of bends) to define the geometry of the thrust
block.
