TIMELINE OF PHILIPPINE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

Pre-Colonial Period:

 Informal education based on oral tradition


and practical skills.
 Tribal leaders and elders were key figures in
imparting knowledge.
 Emphasis on cultural values and survival skills.

Spanish Colonial Period (1565-1898):

 Formal education introduced by Spanish


friars, focusing on Christian teachings.
 1590: Founding of the University of Santo
Tomas (UST).
 Limited access to education, primarily for the
elite and those training for religious service.

American Colonial Period (1898-1946):

 Introduction of a more structured education


system with English as the medium of
instruction.
 1901: Implementation of a comprehensive
education system.
 1908: Establishment of the Philippine Normal
School for teacher training.
 1935: Creation of the National Council of
Education under Commonwealth Act No. 184.

Japanese Occupation (1942-1945):

 Japanese influence led to changes in the


curriculum, incorporating Japanese language
and culture.
 Filipino teachers were replaced by Japanese
educators.
 Educational institutions were repurposed for
military use.

Post-World War II (1946 onwards):

 Late 1940s: Reversion to the pre-war


curriculum after the Philippines regained
independence.
 1950s-1960s: Introduction of new subjects
and curriculum changes.
 1970s: Shift to a bilingual education system
and the implementation of the New Society
Educational Development Plan.
 1980s: Reforms under the Education for
Development Decree of 1972.
 2013: Implementation of the K-12 program,
extending basic education to 12 years.
