Design of flexible Pavement for

CONSTRUCTION OF ROAD FROM NAMKUM TO RING ROAD VIA SADABAHAR CHOWK

Design by Standard Axle Method
The design Traffic is considered in terms of the cummulative number of standard axles (in the lane carrying
maxm. Traffic) to be carried during the design life of the road.It's computation involves estimates of the initial
volume of commercial vehicles per day, lateral distribution of traffic,the growth rate, the design life in years
and the vehicle damage factor( no. of standard axle per commercial vehicle)to convert commercial vehicle to
standard axle.Following equation is used to make the required calculation.
365xAx[(1+r)n-1]xFxD
Ns =
r
Where,
Ns= :The cummulative no. of standard axle to be catered during design life
A= Initial traffic in the year of completion of construction in terms of no. of commercial vehicle per day
duly modified to account for lane distribution
r = Annual growth rate of commercial traffic = 5.0% (Clause 4.2.2 of IRC-37:2018)
n = Design life in years = 15 Years(Clause 4.3.2 of IRC-37:2018)
F= Vehicle damage factor = 3.9 (Clause 4.4.6 of IRC-37:2018)
D= Lane Distribution factor = 0.75 (Clause 4.5.1.2 of IRC-37:2018)
P= Initial Traffic Volume = 858 CVPD
Computation of initial traffic
x = no. of Years of Completion = 1.00 Years

A= P(1+r)x = 857.5 x( 1 + 5.0% ) ^1.0 yr = 900.38

365 x 900.38 x ( 1 + 5.0% )^15 - 1) x 3.9 x 0.75

Ns = 5.0%

= 20.74 msa Say 2030.00

MSA
Since the proposed road is Four Lane road and this road connects NH-33 (Namkum) . Vehicles coming from Tata (Jamshedpur)
and destined towards Khunti, Simdega, Daltonganj will take to this route for shorter journey.This may lead to tremendous
increase in vehicular traffic on the road.Present Traffic on the road doesn't reflect the actual scenario after construction of the
Road. It will be wise to design the crust for traffic count of 30 msa.
Design effective CBR = 5.0%

The Thickness of Base and Sub Base layers of Pavement has been worked out from Plate-1 of IRC:37-2018

Thickness (mm) Bituminous Surfacing

CBR msa
GSB Base Course DBM(mm) BC (mm)
5.0% 30.00 200 250 115 40

Accordingly following Crust composition is being proposed :-

Coarse Graded GSB Gr-I = 200 mm
WMM = 250 mm
DBM = 115 mm
BC = 40 mm
605 mm
Following Crust composition is being proposed in Strengthening Part :-
Thickness of Existing Crust = 200 mm av.
WMM = 250 mm
DBM = 105 mm
BC = 40 mm
595 mm

Verification of Adequacy of thickness of Layers
(i) Calculation of Allowable Horizontal Strain in Bituminous Layer (Ɛt) :-
As Per Clause 6.3 of IRC:37-2018
Resilient Modulus of SubGrade = 10*CBR For CBR Upto 5 %
= 17.6*(CBR)^0.64 For CBR > 5 %
Hence Resilient Modulus of Sub Grade Soil = 10 x 5.0
= 50.00 Mpa
Resilient Modulus of UnBoundSub Base and Base Layer (Clause7.2.3 of IRC:37-2018)
= 0.2( h^0.45)*MR SubGrade
Where
h = Thickness of Sub Base and Base Layer = 450 mm
Hence MR SubBase and Base = 0.2 x ( 450 )^0.45 x 50.0
= 156.30 Mpa
Poisson's Ratio: µ = 0.35
= 3000 Mpa at 35 c 0
Resilient Modulus of BC and DBM for VG40 Grade Bitumen
(Table 9.2 of IRC :37-2018)
Assuming 90% (Traffic >20msa)Reliability Allowable Horizontal Strain in Bituminous Layer can be obtained from
the following Equation
Nf = 3.89
0.5161*C*10-04x[1/Ɛt] *[1/MR]0.854 (Eq.3.3 of IRC:37-2018)
Where
Nf = Fatigue Life in no. of Standard Axle = 30.0 x 10^6
From Eq.3.3
30000000 = 0.5161 X 2.35 x ( 0.0001 x [1/Ɛt]3.89 x ( 1 / 3000 )^0.854
= 1.3E-07 x [1/Ɛt]3.89
Allowable Ɛt = 0.0002031
The Computed Horizontal Tensile Strain From IITPAVE Software comes to 0.0001440 < 0.0002031
Hence thickness of Bituminous layer is Safe. O.K.
(i) Calculation of Allowable Vertical Compressive Strain on Sub Grade (Ɛv) :-
N = 1.41x10-8x[1/Ɛv]4.5337 (Eq.3.1 of IRC:37-2018)
Ɛv = 0.0007092
The Computed Vertical Compressive Strain From IITPAVE Software comes to 0.0002473 < 0.0007092
Hence thickness of Base Course and Sub Base Course layer is Safe O.K.
Hence the Pavement Composition adopted is Safe.
