Chapter 11: Interview Like a Pro

CAREER ACTION WORKSHEET

11-5 Do Your Homework before Every Interviews 

Each time you receive a new job interview, use this form as soon as you can to help you
prepare for this interview. Check off items you have completed and answer the
questions.

Understand the Job Posting. Make a copy of the job description, and do the following:
 Circle words in the job description that are new to you or unique to this company.
 Look up the meaning of unfamiliar words in the job description to ensure you know
what they mean for this career field and this company. Write the meaning on the
job description.
 Number each job skill requirement (1, 2, 3, etc.), and on a separate piece of paper,
write the numbers and a brief description of how you meet these qualifications.
Outline your examples and stories related to this job that can give the interviewer
confidence that you are qualified. Attach the separate pages to this worksheet.

Understand the Company. Find the company website (or Wikipedia page) and answer
the following questions:
When was the company started?

What is the major product(s) this company provides?

The Company is a distributor of threaded fasteners, bolts, nuts, screws, studs, and
related washers, as well as miscellaneous supplies and hardware, such as pins,
machinery keys, concrete anchors, metal framing systems, wire rope, struts, rivets, and
related accessories.

Where is the company located? Is there more than one location?

and the name of the top leaders or owners, then answer these questions:

Is the news about this company generally favorable or not?

Yes, the news is favorable.

What does this news tell you about the company?

This news tells that Fastenal offers a suite of service models and technology solutions to
bring efficiency, visibility, and control to your supply chain.

How might you be able to use this news in an interview discussion to demonstrate
that you are the person they want for this job?

I can use the information about the company's news to demonstrate that you are the
right person for the job by showing how your skills and experiences align with the
company's current goals and challenges. In addition, I can demonstrate how strengths

Learn about your interviewer. Try to find out the name of the person who will interview
you. Do a general Internet and social media search on this person, and answer the
following questions.
What do I have in common with this person? Neighborhood? Schooling? Hobbies or
Interests?

Is this person someone who can offer me the job directly? Or is he or she someone
who will recommend me to others?

Is there a connection between this person and me? A mutual acquaintance? A


friend of a family member or networking contact? If so, describe the connection.

How might you use your knowledge of the interviewer in the interview discussion?
