(Background) “A group of Jewish people went to the Prophet, (SAW) and said to him:
'Describe to us your Lord, for He has revealed His description in the Torah. Tell us: what
is He made of? And to which species does He belong? Is He made of gold, copper or
silver? Does He eat and drink? Who did He inherit this world from? And to whom will
He bequeath it?' And so Allah, revealed this Surah. It is Allah's specific lineage. It is also
related that the idolaters said to the Messenger of Allah, (SAW): “What is the lineage of
your Lord?” and so Allah, revealed (Say: He is Allah, the One! Allah, the eternally
besought of all). The eternally Besought of all (al-Samad) is Him Who (begetteth not nor
was begotten) for anyone who is begotten will certainly die and whoever dies will be
inherited. Allah does not die nor is He inherited. (And there is none comparable unto
Him), He does not have anyone who resembles Him or is like Him. Jabir who said: “The
Prophet, (SAW) was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, tell us about the lineage of your
Lord!' And so this Surah (Say: He is Allah, the One!...) was revealed”.
Sura 112: This sura was revealed when the Quraysh asked the Prophet about his God’s
ancestry. The content of the sura clearly established God’s Oneness, and that He had no
beginning or end, unlike the idols that were worshipped by the pagans at the time. It also
negated the idea of the trinity which the Christians believed in, as well as negating that
God had any physical or human characteristics. As the Prophet was preaching his
message, many people would ask about his God, and this sura would be recited as an
answer, giving a short and comprehensive insight into Islam’s belief in God.
(Background) Ibn 'Abbas said: “This Surah was revealed about al-'As ibn Wa'il. He met
the Messenger of Allah (saw), as he was entering the Sacred Mosque while the Prophet
was coming out of it. They met at the gate of Banu Sahm and started talking to each other
while the chiefs of Quraysh were sitting in the mosque. When al-'As entered the mosque,
they asked him: 'Who were you talking to?' He said: 'I was talking to that man without
posterity', meaning the Messenger of Allah (saw). The Prophet (saw), had lost 'Abdullah,
his son from Khadijah, and so Allah revealed this Surah”. “Whenever the Messenger of
Allah (saw), was mentioned, al-'As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi used to say: 'Leave him be, he is
just a man without posterity; he has no offspring: If he were to die, no one would mention
him again and you will be rid of him'. And so Allah, revealed (Lo! We have given thee
Sura108: This was revealed when the Prophet was going through a period of difficulty
with the Quraysh. Both his sons had died and the Quraysh used this as an opportunity to
mock and tease the Prophet. They said that he was “cut off from his root” (abtar),
meaning that he had no male decedents to carry his name, and they thought that his
message would die when the Prophet passed away. God revealed these verses to console
and give hope to the Prophet that it would not be him, but his enemies that would be cut
off, and that he would be given abundant blessings in this life and the next.
