1 INTRODUCTION
Namkelekile! Kenang ka Kgotso! Re a le amogela!
Vho ṱanganedzwa! Namukelekile! Niyemukelwa!
Welkom! Welcome!
Dear Student
We are pleased to welcome you to the online module, Supply Chain Management (SCH4801).
We trust that you will find it both interesting and rewarding. We shall do our best to make your
study of this module a good learning experience. You will be well on your way to success if you
start to study early in the year and resolve to do the assignments properly.
Teaching and learning in a CODeL context involve multiple modes of delivery ranging from
blended learning to fully online. As a default position, all post graduate programmes are
offered fully online with no printed study materials, while undergraduate programmes are
offered in a blended mode of delivery where printed study materials are augmented with
online teaching and learning via the learner management system – myUnisa. In some
instances, undergraduate programmes are offered fully online as well.
Furthermore, our programmes are aligned with the vision, mission, and values of the
University. Unisa's commitment to serving with humanity and shaping futures combined with
a clear appreciation of our location on the African continent, Unisa's graduates have
distinctive graduate qualities which include
• independent, resilient, responsible, and caring citizens who can fulfil and serve in
multiple roles in their immediate and future local, national and global communities
• having a critical understanding of their location on the African continent with its
histories, challenges, and potential for globally diverse contexts
• the ability to critically analyse and evaluate the credibility and usefulness of
information and data from multiple sources in a globalised world with its ever-
increasing information and data flows and competing worldviews
• how to apply their discipline-specific knowledge competently, ethically, and creatively
to solve real-life problems
• an awareness of their own learning and developmental needs and future potential
Whether a module is offered either as blended (meaning that we use a combination of printed
and online material to engage with you) or online (all information is available via the internet),
4
SCH4801/101/0/2024
we use myUnisa as our virtual campus. This is an online system that is used to administer,
document, and deliver educational material to you and support engagement with you. Look
out for information from your lecturer as well as other Unisa platforms to determine how to
access the virtual myUnisa module site. Information on the tools that will be available to
engage with the lecturer and fellow students to support your learning will also be
communicated via various platforms.
You are encouraged to log into the module site on myUnisa regularly, at least twice per week.
Because this is a fully online module, you will need to use myUnisa to study and complete the
learning activities for this module. Visit the website for SCH4801 on myUnisa frequently. The
website for your module is SCH4801-2024-Y].
2 MODULE OVERVIEW
2.1 Purpose

3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION
Unisa has implemented a transformation charter, in terms of which the university has placed
curriculum transformation high on the teaching and learning agenda. Curriculum transformation
includes student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment
practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies
and philosophies. All of these will be phased in at both programme and module levels, and
because of this you will notice a marked change in the teaching and learning strategy
implemented by Unisa, together with the way in which the content is conceptualised in your
modules. We encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa in a
responsive way within the framework of transformation
You can contact me, the lecturer for this module, if you have any academic enquiries about
the module. My contact details are:

MYLIFE E-MAIL
Registered Unisa students get a free myLife e-mail account. Important information, notices
and updates are sent exclusively to this account. Please note that it can take 24 hours for
your account to be activated after you have claimed it. Please do this immediately after
registering at Unisa by following this link: [email protected]
Your myLife account is the only e-mail account recognised by Unisa for official
correspondence with the university and will remain the official primary e-mail address
on record at Unisa. Therefore, you remain responsible for the management of this e-mail
account.
Many students find the transition from school education to tertiary education stressful. This is
also true in the case of students enrolling at Unisa for the first time. Unisa is a dedicated open-
distance and e-learning institution, and it is very different from face-to-face/contact institutions. It
is a mega university, and all our programmes are offered through either blended learning or fully
online learning. It is for this reason that we thought it necessary to offer first-time students
additional/extended support to help them seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and learning
journey with little difficulty and few barriers. We, therefore, offer a specialised student support
programme to students enrolling at Unisa for the first time – this is Unisa’s First-Year
Experience (FYE) Programme, designed to provide you with prompt and helpful information
about services that the institution offers and how you can access information. The following FYE
services are currently offered:

6.2 Contact with fellow students
Research has shown that one learns best when discussing content (“lecturing”) with others.
Therefore, it is advisable to have contact with fellow students online. One way to do this is to
form study groups. You can establish connections with fellow students on myUnisa. You
should communicate with fellow students on the relevant discussion tabs created on myUnisa
(and not other online social media platforms, for example, WhatsApp or Telegram groups).
6.3 myUnisa
Accessing myUnisa allows you to conveniently find university resources and information. As
Unisa's online campus and learning management system, it facilitates communication with
lecturers, fellow students, and administrative departments. For SCH4801, it is essential to
visit the myUnisa module site regularly. There, you can access the study lessons, tutorial
letters and receive important announcements throughout the semester. The discussion forum
on the site is a valuable resource for clarifying academic content and discussing complex
topics with other students and lecturers.
11
KHUMBULA (REMEMBER):
You must log on to myUnisa regularly. Since this is a fully online module, you
can expect that we will regularly use the SCH4801 myUnisa site to share important
information.
These providers may not have the necessary expertise to assist you and often charge
exorbitant fees. If you receive an invitation from any agency or College, it is best to confirm
with your lecturer if the provider is a legitimate Unisa partner. More information on this is
available on the Unisa website. Using third-party services can result in disciplinary
action; therefore, we strongly advise against their use.
6.4 E-tutoring
7. STUDY PLAN
You have limited time at your disposal to work through the study units and complete the
different compulsory assignments. Therefore, you must plan your studies carefully. I have drawn
up a proposed schedule that you can use as a guideline to plan your studies. However, you
should always work at your own pace. Always keep the due dates (to be communicated) for the
assignments in mind.
IMPORTANT
Before you do the assignments, make sure that you first study the relevant content. You will
have to study an entire chapter (Lessons) to get a broad understanding of concepts. Merely
trying to find the answers to the assignment questions by hastily scanning the content will, in
the end, not be to your advantage. If you do this, you will not acquire the necessary depth of
understanding in the field of study to answer the questions. To be successful, you must plan
and then work diligently. Always keep in mind that the principles that you master in one module
will be used in other modules in your programme.
We also strongly recommend that you do not wait until the closing date of an assessment to
start studying or complete the assessment. Assessments are usually open for a week or more
12
SCH4801/101/0/2024
to accommodate students' varying schedules. Failing to submit within the allocated time would
mean losing valuable marks. Late submissions will not be accommodated. Therefore,
planning your semester is essential to ensure that you pass the module.
The above study plan serves as a guideline. If you prefer not to use this study plan, please
draw up your own. However, you must consistently work throughout the semester.
PLEASE NOTE: *Assignment questions, open dates and due dates are not provided in this
tutorial letter. Instead, you can find this information on myUNISA on the SCH4801 module page.
You must visit myUNISA as soon as you have registered to determine when your first
assessment is due. Also, the above study plan is a general guide, and LUs per assessment
may change. Therefore, always refer to myUNISA for updated information.
ODeL is a different way of learning: there is physical distance between you and your university.
For most of us, our previous learning experiences will not have prepared us for the Unisa study
journey. In open-distance e-learning, YOU are responsible for planning your studies and
13
managing your time effectively. You do not attend daily lectures. Instead, you learn from a
distance and connect to the university mainly through the Internet.
Your study material will consist of written content, whether on paper (e.g., prescribed books or
textbooks) or online (e.g., myUnisa), instead of listening to a teacher or lecturer in a classroom.
In some instances, Unisa provides access to computers and the Internet in our regional offices
and other partner organisations. Still, you should have your own computer and access to
the Internet.
For SCH4801, you will have a prescribed book and various online resources, such as additional
learning activities, videos, and podcasts to help you through your learning journey.
The best way to cope with open-distance e-learning is to take full responsibility for your own
learning experience and environment. Your study world will be the environment you create - a
room at home, a desk somewhere at work, and the connections you make and the virtual
networks you develop.
For this online module (SCH4801), we have created many opportunities for you to engage
online with fellow students by developing interesting discussion questions based on each
learning outcome. We recommend that you take time and participate in these discussions to
enrich your online learning experience.
You will also need to remind your friends, family, and work colleagues that your studies demand
a lot from you because they will probably forget that you are studying and make demands on
your time.
On the SCH4801 module site, we have added several additional resources to enrich your
learning experience; you also need to allocate some time to view these resources after studying
the module content. Therefore, time management is of the utmost importance in this module.
For more information on how to manage this learning environment, please visit the following
website: https://www.unisa.ac.za/sites/corporate/default/Apply-for-admission/Undergraduate-
qualifications/ODL-and-Unisa/ODL-is-a-different-way-of-learning
9. ASSESSMENT
9.1 Assessment criteria
14
SCH4801/101/0/2024
• sharing acquired knowledge in the field of purchasing and supply management with
fellow students on electronic platforms created for this purpose.
• sharing uncertainties related to the module content and administrative issues with fellow
students, and the lecturer.
• All the lesson's corresponding parts in the prescribed book need to be studied for the
assessments.
• In the assessments (assignments and examinations), you can apply the principles you
have studied to either a case study or practice.
• Do not focus on previous examination papers as part of your preparation. Instead, use
these papers only for revision purposes.
• Keep the outcomes of each study unit in mind.
15
This is an online system that is used to administer, document, and deliver educational
material to students and support engagement between academics and students.
• The myUnisa platform can be accessed via https://my.unisa.ac.za. Click on the
myModules 2024 button to access the online sites for the modules that you are
registered for.
• The university undertakes to communicate clearly and as frequently as is necessary to
ensure that you obtain the greatest benefit from the use of the myModules learning
management system. Please access the announcements on your myModules site
regularly, as this is where your lecturer will post important information to be shared with
you.
• When you access your myModules site for the module/s you are registered for, you will
see a welcome message posted by your lecturer. Below the welcome message you will
see the assessment shells for the assessments that you need to complete. Some
assessments may be multiple choice, some tests, others written assessments, some
forum discussions, and so on. All assessments must be completed on the assessment
shells available on the respective module platforms.
• To complete quiz assessments, please log on to the module site where you need to
complete the assessment. Click on the relevant assessment shell (Assessment 1,
Assessment 2, etc.). There will be a date on which the assessment will open for you.
When the assessment is open, access the quiz online and complete it within the time
available to you. Quiz assessment questions are not included in this tutorial letter
(Tutorial Letter 101) and are only made available online. You must therefore access the
quiz online and complete it online where the quiz has been created.
• It is not advisable to use a cell phone to complete the quiz. Please use a desktop
computer, tablet or laptop when completing the quiz. Students who use a cell phone find
it difficult to navigate the Online Assessment tool on the small screen and often struggle
to navigate between questions and successfully complete the quizzes. In addition, cell
phones are more vulnerable to dropped internet connections than other devices. If at all
possible, please do not use a cell phone for this assessment type.
• For written assessments, please note the due date by which the assessment must be
submitted. Ensure that you follow the guidelines given by your lecturer to complete the
assessment. Click on the submission button on the relevant assessment shell on
myModules. You will then be able to upload your written assessment on the myModules
site of the modules that you are registered for. Before you finalise the upload, double-
check that you have selected the correct file for upload. Remember, no marks can be
allocated for incorrectly submitted assessments.
• Elective assignments
– If not submitted, the student gets no mark for this item.
– The best of the required submissions will count.
• Mandatory assignments
– If not submitted, the student gets no mark for this item.
16
SCH4801/101/0/2024
• Compulsory assignments
– If not submitted, the result on the student’s academic record will be absent.
• Optional assignments
– As a student, you are encouraged to do optional assignments to benefit your learning
should one be made available in the module.
I. Elective assignments
a. The student is given a choice of which assignments within an identified group to
submit, only the best result(-s), the number of which is specified in advance, will
contribute towards the year mark.
b. Elective assignments must also be grouped into an elective group.
c. For the student to select which assignment to submit, the elective assignments
must be grouped together. For such an elective group, relevant information must
be provided to the student, such as how many assignments must be submitted and
how many of the assignment marks should be combined into the year mark.
d. The selection criteria define how marks received for assignments in an elective
group are to be combined into the year mark. Three different criteria may be used
to calculate the year mark:
• The best mark should be used, or
• If the student submits fewer than the required number of assignments per group
or no assignment in a group, a mark of 0% will be used.
• 0% is awarded to all non-submitted or unmarked assessments. The best mark
is then calculated from all the items.
As indicated in section 9.2, you need to complete three assessments for this module. There are
no assignments included in this tutorial letter. Assignments and due dates will be made
available to you on myModules for this module. We envisage that the due dates will be available
to you upon registration. It is important that you do well in all these assignments to obtain
admission to the exam.
17
9.6 The examination
Examination information and details on the format of the examination will be made available to
you online via the myUnisa site. Look out for information that will be shared with you by your
lecturer and e-tutors (where relevant) and for communication from the university.
9.7.1 Invigilation/proctoring
Since 2020 Unisa conducts all its assessments online. Given stringent requirements from
professional bodies and increased solicitations of Unisa’s students by third parties to unlawfully
assist them with the completion of assignments and examinations, the University is obliged to
assure its assessment integrity through the utilisation of various proctoring tools: Turnitin,
Moodle Proctoring, the Invigilator App and IRIS. These tools will authenticate the student’s
identity and flag suspicious behaviour to assure the credibility of students’ responses during
assessments. The description below is for your benefit as you may encounter any or all of these
in your registered modules:
Turnitin is a plagiarism software that facilitates checks for originality in students’ submissions
against internal and external sources. Turnitin assists in identifying academic fraud and ghost-
writing. Students are expected to submit typed responses for utilisation of the Turnitin software.
The Moodle Proctoring tool is a facial recognition software that authenticates students’ identity
during their Quiz assessments. This tool requires access to a student’s mobile or laptop
camera. Students must ensure their camera is activated in their browser settings before their
assessments.
IRIS Invigilation software verifies the identity of a student during assessment and provides for
both manual and automated facial verification. It can record and review a student’s assessment
session. It flags suspicious behaviour by the students for review by an academic administrator.
IRIS software requires installation on students’ laptop devices that are enabled with a webcam.
Students who are identified and flagged for suspicious dishonest behaviour arising from
the invigilation and proctoring reports are referred to the disciplinary office for a formal
proceeding.
Please note:
Students must refer to their module assessment information on their myModule sites to
determine which proctoring or invigilation tool will be utilised for their assessments. However,
for written assessment, Turnitin is used, and in the exam, the Invigilator App tool and
Turnitin software will be used.

• Copying and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
• Not including references or deliberately inserting incorrect bibliographic information.
• Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.
10.2 Cheating
Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:
As we embark on this academic journey together, we urge you to uphold the highest
standards of academic integrity. We have noted previous cohorts of students exhibiting
unsatisfactory behaviours such as cheating in assessments, notably buying written
assessments from third parties, or directly copying from sources or other students
or using AI tools for answering assessments or copying answers from AI tools - these
actions are unacceptable.
Plagiarism and cheating, whether by copying, poorly paraphrasing, or not citing sources
correctly, will not be tolerated. The consequences include a 0% score on your assessment
and a potential suspension from the university.
For more information about plagiarism and cheating, follow the link below:
