A Quick Guide to Zoom

What is Zoom?
Zoom is a popular video chat platform that works with iOS, Android, and
Windows operating systems. While you can use Zoom in your web browser,
we recommend downloading the app on your devices for the best
experience. You don’t need an account to use Zoom; just click on the Zoom
link to join a video call!

Why use Zoom?


● To join a meeting and attend class virtually: one click, and you’re in
● For iOS, Android, and Windows
● Basic plan is free, with other plan options
● Attend many types of events
Note: There are paid versions of Zoom, but this guide will focus on the
free version.

How to Download Zoom to Your


Desktop/Laptop

Note: You don’t have to download the app if you’re using


Zoom on your computer, but you may have access to limited
features if you join from your web browser (like Safari and
Google Chrome). If you don’t want to download the app, skip
to Joining from a Computer.

Step #1
Visit zoom.us on your web browser. In the top right corner of the Zoom
homepage, you’ll see “Sign Up Free.” Click on that button.

Step #2
You will be asked to verify your age by entering your birth year. This is
because children under 16 cannot create a Zoom account (unless it’s
through a School Subscriber). Click Continue.

Step #3
Type your email address to create a Zoom profile. Then you will be asked
to create an account by entering your First Name and Last Name. You will
have to create a password. Your password will need to be:
● 8 characters long
● 1 number
● 1 uppercase
● 1 lowercase.
Remember to save or write down your password!

Step #4
Below is what the homepage of your Zoom account may look like. You will
be prompted to download Zoom to your computer on the homepage. Click
Download Now.

Under Zoom Workplace desktop app, click Download. You may need to
find your Downloads folder to find the installation. If you are using Google
Chrome, the picture below can be where you may find the download. When
you find it, double-click it to open it.

Step #6
Once you’ve downloaded the app, you may see a message saying, “The
installation was successful.” Click Done and you may log into your Zoom
account using the email address and password you used in Step 3.

You are ready to start using Zoom on your device!

How to Download Zoom to Your


Mobile Device

Downloading Zoom to your smartphone or tablet is


recommended if you want to move around during your video
chat. If you want to join a meeting using your smartphone or
tablet, you will need to download the Zoom mobile app.

Step #1
If you have an iOS device (e.g. iPhone/iPad), visit the Apple App Store
and search “Zoom”.

If you have an Android device (e.g. Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel), visit
the Google Play Store and search “Zoom”.

Step #2
Tap “Get” or “Install” to download the Zoom app to your mobile device.
Then, authorize the download by entering your Apple ID and password (or
face recognition).

Step #3
Once it is finished downloading, tap on
the Zoom app icon on your device. It is a
blue square with the words “Zoom” in
the center.

The Zoom homepage will look like the
picture on the right.

You can log in using your email address


and password.

If you haven’t made an account already,


you can sign up.

You can also join a meeting by typing in


the Meeting ID. More about Joining a
Meeting using a Meeting ID.

You are ready to use Zoom on your


mobile device!

Joining from a Computer

The Zoom app should automatically download when you first


join a Zoom meeting. You may have to give Zoom permission
to access your computer’s camera and microphone so that you
can fully participate in the meeting.

When you click on a Zoom link, you’ll see a message like the
one below.
Select either Open Zoom Meetings or Launch Meeting.

Joining from a Mobile Device

Before you begin, make sure you’ve downloaded the Zoom


app on your smartphone or tablet. You can download it just
like you would download any other app: from the App Store
(iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). For instructions on
how to download the Zoom app to your mobile device, look
for the section How to Download Zoom to Your Mobile
Device.

Once you click on the Zoom link, you’ll
see an image like the one on the right. If
you have already downloaded the Zoom
app, tap Launch Meeting.

Confirm that you want to open the
meeting using the Zoom app by tapping
Open.

Enter your name when prompted. Then
tap Continue.

Step #4
Zoom asks for permission to access your microphone and camera for the
first time you use it on a device.

Tap OK to give the Zoom app permission to access your device’s


microphone and camera so others can see and hear you.

Step #5
If you like receiving notifications, tap
Allow. If you prefer not to receive them,
tap Don’t Allow. This will not affect
your experience of Zoom meetings.

Step #6
You may see a message about joining
audio. Select Wifi or Cellular Data.
After you join audio, you’ll be able to
participate in the Zoom meeting.

Step #1
Open the Zoom app on your device.

If you haven’t downloaded the Zoom app


to your mobile device, follow the
instructions on How to Download Zoom
to Your Mobile Device.

Before you join a meeting for the first
time, check the app’s audio setting. Tap
the Settings icon.

In Settings, tap the Meetings option.

You want the option Auto Connect
Audio to be turned on. If it says “Off,”
tap it to open it.

Next, tap Wifi or Cellular Data so that a
blue arrow appears to the right. Tap
Done.

Step #6
You should see the words “Wifi or
Cellular Data” next to the Auto Connect
Audio option. Tap the back arrow again
until you exit Settings and return to the
app.

Tip #1!
You only have to do these steps once! After that, Zoom will automatically
connect you to audio using the device’s internet.

Tip #2!
When you join a meeting, your MICROPHONE and VIDEO are ON by
default. If you want to turn them OFF, follow Step #1 through Step #3 to
get to the Meetings option. Turn ON the Mute My Microphone and Turn
Off My Camera options.

Joining a Zoom Meeting

There are two ways you can join a Zoom meeting: clicking a
link or entering the Meeting ID and password sent to you by
the host.

Joining a Zoom Meeting by Link

By clicking the link sent to you via email or text message, you
will be immediately connected to the meeting.

The Meeting ID is usually a 10- to 11-digit number.

Zoom Controls

Below are Zoom's main features you will interact with most
during virtual meetings. Depending on your device, Zoom’s
meeting controls may be located in different areas of your
screen. To use the different controls, look for the icons below,
including the More icon.

Video Icon (Start Video)


Description: video camera icon with a red slash

Tap this icon to START your video.

Tap this icon to TURN your camera OFF.

Join Audio Icon

If you see this icon, you may need to select this


icon to select the source audio so that you can
hear and be heard in the meeting.

Microphone Icon (Unmute)

If you see this icon, you are muted. Tap to


UNMUTE yourself.

Microphone Icon (Mute)


Description: white microphone icon, with

This icon means that you are unmuted. Tap to


MUTE yourself.

Participants Icon
Description: thought bubble (chat bubble?)
with three dots, with “Participants” underneath

Tap here to see the names of participants on the


Zoom call with you.

Share Screen Icon


Description: green box with an up arrow inside,
with “Share Screen” underneath

If the host allows, you can share your screen by


selecting this Share Screen icon. Doing so will
allow other participants to see a link or
application (like PowerPoint or Google Slides)
you want to share.

Most useful during class presentations when


you have to share your screen to present.

Reactions Icon
Description: smiling emoji with a plus sign on
its head, with “Reactions” underneath

You can react to what someone has said by


tapping this icon.

Tip! You can also use this icon to Raise Hand


when you want to ask a question. Remember to
Lower Hand when the instructor calls on you!

Closed Captioning (CC) Icon


Description: white box with the letters “CC” in
it, with “Live Transcript” underneath

If Closed Captioning (CC) is available, select the


Live Transcript icon to view or hide the captions.
Use your mouse or finger (mobile device) to move
the captions around on your screen.

like on the right. This may vary based on the
device you are using.

Using the Chat Feature in Zoom


Step#1
Find the Chat icon/button like the one
on the right. You may have to tap/click
on More from the control panel at the
bottom of your screen to find this option.

Step#2
This will take you to a new screen with a
keyboard. Messages will be sent to
Everyone, meaning all participants in the
meeting, by default. Type your message,
then tap Send!

Close out of the Chat by clicking on the


X in the top left-hand corner when you’re
ready to return to the Zoom meeting.
