1. Application
FZ18-21/2FZ18-21 forging series hydraulic ram BOP is one of the key elements of
the well control system. It is mainly used to control the well head pressure during
such operations as drilling, servicing and oil testing to prevent any blow out hazard
effectively and ensure safe operations. Specifically, then FZ18-21/2FZ18-21 ram
blowout preventer can perform the following operations.
1) With proper pipe ram sealing the annular space between casing and drilling string
when there is pipe in the hole.
2) With blind ram completely sealing well head when there is no pipe in the hole.
3) When the well head is closed, with killing manifold and choke manifold connected
to the drilling spool and the outlet of the body doing mud circulating, chocking and
releasing, well killing and well cleaning etc.
4) With killing manifold and choke manifold, effectively controlling bottom hole
pressure to balance bottom hole pressure

3. Operation Principles
When the high pressure oil of the hydraulic control system is introduced into the left and
right hydraulic ram closure chambers, then impelling piston drives the ram shaft and the left and
right ram assembly to the center of the wellhead along the Ram Block chamber to close the well.
When the high pressure oil is introduced into the left and right hydraulic cylinder ram open
chambers, the impelling piston drives the ram shaft and the left and right ram assembly away
4
from the center of the wellhead to open the well. Then open and closure of the ram is controlled
through the reversal valve of the hydraulic control unit. Generally the open and closure
operations can be completed within 3 to 5 seconds (but correlated with the status of the
hydraulic control system, the specifications of the hydraulic control line and the length of this
one)
A ram blowout preventer can only effectively close a well when all the four seals have taken
effect. These for seals include the seal between the ram top seal and the body, then seal between
the ram front seal and the pipe, and the front seal, then seal between the body and the bonnet,
and the seal between the ram shaft and the bonnet.
The ram sealing process is divided into two steps, In the first step the hydraulic oil forces the
ram shaft to impel the Front Packer rubber element to take it deformed and seal the front part
and it also lets the Top Seal rubber element the interfered and compressed to fill the gap
between the Top Seal element and the body and seal the top, thus finish the primary sealing. In
the second stem, with the help of the pressure inside the well the ram is impelled from behind to
allow the further deformation of the Front Packer element and thus achieve the reliable sealing
of the well. This is called the well pressure assisted sealing effect.
Such major pressure bearing components as the body and the bonnet are forged formed
with alloy steels of high strength and high malleability and properly heat treated. And the
water pressure test for strength is performed for each preventer according to the API SPEC
It is long circle type of the ram cavity, to reduce the stress concentration. At the bottom of
the chamber of the body and the ram there are high brace rods and a sand depositing slot
5
towards the well bore. So the sands and silts can be removed automatically when the ram is
opened and closed. This can reduce the kinetic frictional resistance of the ram and is also
helpful to the well pressure assisted sealing of the ram. Then inner surface of the ram
A kind of floating ram sealing is adopted to reduce the resistance in opening ore closing the
ram, minimize the wearing of the rubber elements and lengthen the service life of the ram.
It also prevents the body and ram from rusting together and thus is easy to dismount.
Hydraulic pipe is used with buried structure to avoid damaging the pipe during installation,
According to users and the need for the dimensions and bore size design and manufacturing,
The dimensions of the external connections are in conformity with the API SPEC 16A norms.

device shall be complete installed, well fixed and a label indicating the number of
circles needed for the opening and closing operation shall be attached to the hand
wheel. All the coupling bolts shall be homogeneously tightened cornerwise one by
one.
2) Check whether the oil circuit connection pipe lines are in accordance with
the label for the blowout preventer .The various kinds of ram can be opened and
closed twice in trial under a control pressure of 2 to 3 MPa by the control console to
expel the air inside the oil line. Adjust the connection pipeline if the open and
closure of the rams are not in conformity with those indicated on the handle of the
control console.
11
3) Check the connection of the manual locking device to see whether the
manual lever can freely control the open and closure of the ram and note done the
number or circles of the hand wheel needed to close the well and indicate it on the
label of the hand well. After finishing the test rotate the hand wheel to the left back
to the unlocked position and hydraulically open the ram.
4) Perform a complete pressure test for the devices at the wellhead and the
standards for the pressure test shall be in accordance with the relevant well control
procedures and regulations ,Check the tightness of all the connection bolts once
again after the pressure test to preventer any non-uniformity in tightness. The
tightening moments of the bolts of the flanges are listed in table 1 or table 2.
6.2.Uses
The testing media shall be clean water or drilling fluid. During the pressure test
the timing shall be started after the pressure has been stabilized.
13
E. Improve the well pressure to the maximum nominal working of the blowout
preventer, 35MPa and allow the pressure to stabilize for 10minnutes,Check if there
are any leakages and the sealing is judged as passed if there are no leakages.
F. Reduce the well pressure to zero, rotate the locking shaft counter clockwise to
unlock it. After unlocking rotate it backward for 1/8 to 1/4 circles.
G. Open the ram hydraulically. Check the abrasion of the ram of the blowout
preventer and the situation of the seal, and make records.
The nominal working pressure of the hydraulic control system of the blowout
preventer is 21MPa. The open and closure of it shall be tested separately when it is
tested. Then testing media is the hydraulic oil.
A. Do not install the ram or leave the bonnet rotate to the open position. Pay
attention not to let the ram shaft touch the body when it is protruded. The
blowout preventer shall be fixed to the ground to prevent it from falling because
of the shift in the center of gravity after the two bonnets have been opened at
the same time.
B. Perform the testing of the closure chamber under a pressure of 21MPa,and
allow the pressure to stabilized for 10minnutes,Check if there are any leakages
and the sealing is judged as passed if there are no leakages.
C. Reduced the hydraulic control pressure to zero.
D. Perform the testing of the open chamber under a pressure of 21MPa,and allow
the pressure to stabilized for 10minnutes,Check if there are any leakages and
the sealing is judged as passed if there are no leakages.
E. Reduced the hydraulic control pressure to zero.
6.3 .Precautions
It is not allowed to release the pressure by opening the ram to avoid damaging
the rubber element. Check whether the manual locking device has been
unlocked every time before opening the ram. After opening the ram, check
14
whether the ram has been fully opened or not (drawn back completely inside
the body) to avoid damaging the ram by the drilling tools.
It is not allowed to rotate the drilling tools when the ram is closed.
Pay attention to keep the hydraulic pressure oil clean.
After using or testing the blowout preventer or before storing it, the water inside
it shall be completely drained. The ram shall be kept at the fully opened position
and rust-proofing measures shall be taken.
The blowout preventer shall be thoroughly cleaned and inspected after serving
each well. Damaged parts shall be replaced in time.
1) The blowout preventer shall be thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
2) Check the seal rubber parts, if there are any damages, please change the new
parts, when mounting the seal rings, its surface shall be covered with lubricant
and the corresponding sealing surface shall also be covered with lubricant to
facilitate the mounting operation. Take care to allow the seal ring to pass
through the threaded parts smoothly and avoid any scratches. Pay attention to
the direction of the lip seal to make sure that the opening of the lip shall be
pointed to the pressure side.
3) Check all the spare parts, when it is light damages, please repair it. It shall be
replaced the new parts when serious damages.
4) The chamber between the body and the ram shall be covered with oil as the rust
proofing measure, covered with thread grease in the connection thread position,
covered with lubricating oil in the bearing position.
Elements
The ram sealing rubber elements are the key components for the successfully
15
well closing for the blowout preventer. It is impossible for the blowout preventer
to close a well once it is damaged. So they shall be kept intact without any
defects. Once a defect is found it shall be replaced in time. The procedures for
the replacement of the ram and the ram sealing rubber elements are as follows:
1) Open the ram to the fullest through the hydraulic oil.
2) Drain off the liquid control oil pressure.
3) Place a clean oil basin below the hydraulic cylinder to prevent the hydraulic oil
from leaking onto the ground during the dismounting operation.
The hinge mount of the bonnet is the rotating shaft of the bonnet as well as the
channel for the hydraulic oil. When the seal ring is damaged leakages of oil will occur.
Then it shall be disassembled and checked following the specific procedures below.
1) First make sure that the bonnet and the body are firmly connected.
2) Dismount the two position pins on the hinge mount and then dismount the four
coupling bolts.
3) Take the hinge mount down from the bonnet and a copper stick may be used to hit
it gently to facilitate this operation if necessary. It is strictly forbidden to apply too
much force to avoid damaging the sealing surface.
4) Check the O rings on the hinge mount and replace all the O rings as much as
possible. Check whether there are any scratches on the sealing surface and repair
them if necessary.
16
5) Cover the connection surface with lubricant when installing. Hit it gently into the
bonnet and pay attention to the position of the position holes. First mount the two
position pins and then mount the four bolts.
If there any damages or leakages of oil at the ram shaft sealing, the piston
sealing, the piston sealing or the locking shaft sealing, they shall be
dismounted and repaired.
1) If the ram is not in the fully opened position, hydraulically open it to the fullest
first. If the bolts of the bonnet have been dismounted, close the bonnet, at least
mount two bolts at two cornerwise positions and then hydraulically open the
ram.
2) Place a clean oil basin below the hydraulic cylinder to prevent the hydraulic oil
from leaking onto the ground during the dismounting operation..
3) Dismount the fixing studs and the nuts on the cylinder cap and then dismount
the cylinder cap.
4) Screw the locking shaft clockwise out of the ram shaft.
5) Take down the hydraulic cylinder.
6) Loosen the lock screw (NO.19) in the lock nut of the piston.
