Some students move to a different country for university education. In 2011, the number was just over
four million students worldwide. By 2025 the number is estimated to reach eight million.

Source 2: Moving away for work or study

It has become more popular for young people to move to another area of their country or go to a
different country to work or study.

Young people will gain skills that will improve their job prospects. Time spent away from home can be a
positive, life-changing experience. Young people may develop a better understanding of other cultures,
learn a different language and build their self-confidence.

Young people are the future of the nation. Their experience is important for the country’s economy.
When they return home they will help improve our links with other countries. However, if they do not
return our country will lose a valuable resource.

Source 3: Young people do not care about their culture

I am very upset that our young people do not care about their culture. Many of them finish school and
move to a city or even a different country. Is our village not good enough for them? How do their family
manage?

They spend a few months or even a year away from their families and their local community. In some
cases they do not return so our country does not get any benefit from their education. This is a waste
of the money that has been spent on their education.

Ten years ago, I worked as a teacher and in my class over half the students moved away to the city. On
television there are programmes about how exciting it is in cities. Only yesterday some young people
were interviewed by Professor Maine, a famous economist. According to his research, students who
study in a different country have more interest in other cultures.

Source 4: A school debate about where to live in the future

Nikita

When I was ten, my brother moved to another area in our country. He did very well at school and he
wanted to work with computers in a large company.

At home, we were very upset. We missed him and needed him at home to help us all with the family
business. My grandparents thought he would lose our traditional values and way of life.

What can you gain if you move to another area? You leave your friends behind. People cannot visit you
unless they are earning a lot of money. Nobody used to move away from here when my parents were
young.

When I am older, I will stay with my family. Our families are important. My father has a business and
he employs over 150 people. I will take over the business when I am older and if there are no young
people in the village the business may close down.

Tanu

You have the wrong ideas for your future my friend. Think about money more. Think about a big house
and servants to help with the cleaning. How can I support a family if I do not move to somewhere else?
My future wife will want to be like me, with fashionable clothes and an excellent lifestyle.

I read in a business magazine that wages in the south of my country are better. I will earn 30 per cent
more if I move there. If I move to a different country I will earn twice as much! On television, I watch
programmes about people’s experiences around the world. Everyone else has more opportunities.

My family back home will manage without me and I can send them money once I have a good job.
