3. PURPOSE:
The object of this method Statement is to lay down a procedure for carrying out the
confirmatory plate load test on PCC bottom level at Box Culverts to check the SBC after
ground improvement at Br. 34 as per the approved drawing and IS 1888.

4. Reaction
The reaction shall be obtained as under –
4.1 - Kent ledge load shall be used as the dead weight of Excavator of 21.2 MT.
4.2 - The maximum ultimate load is to confirm 27.25tons/sqm (Br.34). The corresponding
ultimate load required on a plate size of 60 x 60 cm. is 9.81 tons. The thickness of plate shall
be 25mm.
4.3 - The maximum reaction to be made available for the test shall be 9.81 tons (Br.34) i.e.,
1.25 times the required loading. In our case we use 21.2 Ton. Hence it is ok.
4.4 - A typical arrangement for the test setup is shown below. The main purpose is to check
the required load and meeting the testing requirements within the allowable settlements
METHOD STATEMENT FOR Page 6 of 9
6. Settlement
6.1 - Settlement shall be recorded with 4 dial gauges of 0.01 mm sensitivity, each positioned
at diametrically opposite corner of plate piles and shall be held by datum bars.
6.2 - For each load increment, settlements shall be recorded at 1 min. 2.25 min, 4 min, 6.25
min, 9 min, 16 min, 25 min and 1hr to the nearest 0.02 mm. Then next increment shall be
applied, and it will be continued till the required ultimate bearing capacity is reached.
7. Unloading
After the criteria as per settlement is reached, unloading shall be done in same decrements
and recovery in settlements shall be recorded after the readings become stable.
8. Report
Safe bearing capacity shall be estimated as per IS 1888.
