Year Module
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
This tutorial letter contains important information
about your module.
Dear student
1. If you have received a kit previously, you can use that same kit to do your experiments
this year.
2. You can only use electronic workbench for a period of 30 days.
3. Do the Experiments and fill in your results on the applicable pages.
4. Detach these pages and submit as your practical assignments for this subject.
5. Please note that an ECSA registered professional mentor is preferable but not required
at this level. If you cannot find an ECSA registered professional mentor, any
professional person may be your mentor. This person must supervise your experiments
in order to verify that you have submitted your own work.

Laboratory Requirements.
The aim of laboratories is to reinforce theory. Practical circuits can be built to confirm the
content of the prescribed text book.
In order to do the laboratories the student will require the equipment and components listed
below:
3
2. A.C. Adaptor (Supplied with the trainer).
Please note A.C. adaptor should be plugged into the trainer before the mains voltage is
switched on or off to prevent damage to the trainer.

Using the AD2004 Analogue/Digital Trainer
We first need to familiarize ourselves with the internal connections of the breadboard as this is
where we will insert components in order to build circuits.
The breadboard has two sets of power rails top and bottom and they are connected horizontally
internally. The middle section has vertical connections of five holes above the break and five
holes below the break. There is no internal connection between the top five and bottom five
holes. To apply power to the breadboard power rails we must use hook wire to connect from the
+5V to the positive rail and 0V to the negative rail as shown on the next page. These
connections can be left permanently on the breadboard as all the TTL circuits built require 0V
and 5V.
Digital signals (Inputs to the circuits) are obtained from the eight dip switches and outputs are
monitored on the eight LED’s.
A logic probe is also included which can be used to determine logic states at certain points in
the circuit. A red LED indicates a high logic state (5V) and a green LED indicates a logic low
state (0V)
Though the AD2004 Analogue/Digital Trainer has many other features they will not be required
to be used in the experiments that follow.
6
DSY1501/102/02/2023
In order to familiarize yourself with the trainer take hook-up wire and connect switch outputs to
the LED’s. When the switch is on the corresponding LED’s should light indicating a 5V output. If
the switch is off then the corresponding LED’s should be off indicating 0V output. The trainer
has protective fuses so under normal conditions you should not do any damage to the trainer,
so explore its features!

Workbench Software
The National Instruments (NI) Circuit Design Suite is a suite of EDA (Electronics Design
Automation) tools that assists you in carrying out the major steps in the circuit design flow.
Multisim is the schematic capture and simulation program designed for schematic entry,
simulation, and feeding to downstage steps, such as PCB layout. Multisim also includes mixed
analog/digital simulation capability.
Ultiboard, fed from Multisim, is used to design printed circuit boards, perform certain basic
mechanical CAD operations, and prepare them for manufacturing. Ultiboard also provides
automated parts placement and layout.
Use the simulation software to run your experiments. In instances where you don’t have the
necessary equipment, e.g. oscilloscope, the software will be very useful. The software is
intended for you to use for the following modules:
ECTPRA1
ELEPRA1 and
DIGPRA1
Installation of the software
The software we have sent you is a 30-day trial version which will be available in your
computer for the first 30 days starting from the day of installation. After 30 days you will not be
able to use the software. This means that you should install the software when you have time
do your experiments. Should you need to purchase the full licensed version of the software
please visit www.ni.com/academic/multisim.
Installing NI Circuit Design Suite 10.0
This section describes the system requirements and installation procedures for
NI Circuit Design Suite.

DSY1501/102/02/2023
Minimum System Requirements
To run NI Circuit Design Suite 10.0, National Instruments recommends that your
system meet the following requirements:
Installation Instructions
The NI Circuit Design Suite 10.0 installer installs all products in the suite:
Multisim, Ultiboard, and the Multisim MCU Module.
It is recommended that you close all open applications before you
install NI Circuit Design Suite.
Unless you specify another location during installation, the NI Circuit Design
Suite installation program copies files to <Program Files>\National
Instruments\Circuit Design Suite 10.0 after you complete the
following steps:
1. Insert the NI Circuit Design Suite CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD startup screen
is not visible, select Run from the Windows Start menu and run setup.exe from your
CD.
9
Product Activation
When you run a product in the NI Circuit Design Suite for the first time, it will
prompt you to activate a license for that product.
Note: To run the Multisim MCU Module, place a component from the MCU
Module group on a Multisim circuit or open a Multisim file that contains a
component from the MCU Module group.
If you do not activate a valid license, the product will run in Evaluation Mode and continue to
prompt you to activate a license on each subsequent run. Evaluation Mode is valid for 30 days
following the first run of the product.
For information about how to activate your software product, please refer to the
Activation Instructions for National Instruments Products Note to Users included
with your NI Circuit Design Suite 10.0 package.

Experiment 1.
Objective:
To familiarize the students with the operation of the basic logic elements of the OR gate and
And gates as well as the use of the logic probe.
Components required:
Procedure:
Remember to identify the pin numbers on the I.C. as indicated below. Once you have identified
pin 1 you then proceed in an anti-clockwise direction as you number the pins. Example the pin
directly to right of pin 1 would be pin 2 then pin 3 etc.
11
The wiring of the two circuits is critical and any mistake will cause an error to occur. The first I.C.
to the left is the 7400quad 2 input Nand gate. If you refer to data sheets on back page, you will
see that there are four Nand gates in a 7400 and we only need to use one. It is also very
important to note that the I.C.’s need power i.e. 5V on pin 14 (Vcc) shown in red and 0V on pin
7(Gnd). Not all I.C.’s are the same so it is important to check the data sheets. The inputs to the
7400 are shown in blue (pins 13 and 12) and the output in green (pin11).
The second I.C. to the right is a 7402 quad 2 input Nor gate. Again we must apply power to pins
14 and 7 before the I.C. will function. The inputs to the I.C. are shown in Yellow and the output
in purple. It’s now time to build the circuit as shown and establish if they are working using the
truth tables associated with these gates.

Experiment 5.
Objective:
To familiarize the student with the 4511(or any decoder) seven segment decoder as well as a
seven segment common cathode display.
Procedure:
The four BCD inputs come from the trainer’s switches and are connected to input pins on the
4511 BCD to Seven Segment Decoder. Pins a to g are the seven segment outputs which must
be connected to the corresponding pins on the seven segment display. The Pins not used in
this experiment and should be connected to the +5V supply rail on the bread board.
The seven segment display must have pin 4 and pin 12 connected to the 0V rail through 470
ohm resistor as this is a common cathode device.

Assignment
Objective:
To take a practical problem and logically solve it as well building a functional circuit to solve the
problem
Task:
You are given the task of designing a circuit which will allow pilots to land their
aircraft in bad weather. The aircraft is fitted with a radio receiver which gives a four
bit binary output code. If the aircraft is very low the code will be 00002 to 00102, if
the aircraft is low the code will be 00112 to 01012, if the aircraft is at the correct
height then the code will be 01102 to 10012, if the aircraft is high the code will be
10102 to 11002 and if the aircraft is very high the code will be 11012 to 11112. In
the cockpit are four LEDs, when the aircraft is very low LED A should light, when
the aircraft is low LEDs A and B should light, at the correct height all the LEDs
should light, when the aircraft is high LEDs C and D should light and when the
aircraft is very high LED D should light.. Show all steps and give the logic
diagrams.
