VI. Learning Experiences (5 Es)

1. Engage ROUTINE
1. Prayer
2. Attendance and Physical Arrangement Check
3. Recalling
Let’s Recall! Each student, find the square/cube root of each
5 minutes number. One student comes in front at a time.
1. √ 25 = 5
2. √ 64 = 8
3. √ 169 = 13
4. √ 100 = 10
5. √ 289 = 17
6. √ 400 = 20

2. Explore Group activity

I will group you into two groups, count one two one two, then the group 1 in the
right side and the group 2 in the left side, then choose your leader to present your
works in front, you have 5 minutes to do the activity.
10 minutes
Instruction: Eleven different words are hidden in this puzzle. How many can you
find? You may look up, down, across, backward, and diagonally. Good luck!

DISCUSSION PROPER

What are Real numbers?

3. Explain
20 minutes Real numbers are defined as the collection of all rational
numbers and irrational numbers, denoted by R. Therefore, a
real number is either rational or irrational.

The set of real numbers is: R = {…-3, -√2, -½, 0, 1, ⅘, 16,….}

Five Subsets of Real Numbers

1. Natural or Counting Numbers - used in counting, uses ellipses

to indicate that the pattern continues indefinitely.

- In natural or counting numbers are subsets of all positive

integers that we use to count starting with "1"and so on.

2. Whole Numbers, consisting of the set of natural or counting

numbers and zero.

The subset would look like this:

{0, 1, 2, 3, 4...}

3. Integers, the result of the union of the set of whole numbers

and the negative of counting numbers.
Example: -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4

4. Rational Numbers, can be expressed as a quotient of two

integers. The integer a is the numerator while the integer b,
which cannot be 0 is the denominator. This set includes fractions
and some decimal numbers.

Examples of rational numbers are

5.34, 6, 0.131313… , 9.

1
3 2
, ,− 𝑎𝑛𝑑 5.666…
4 2 5

5. Irrational Numbers, cannot be expressed as a quotient of two

integers. Every irrational number may be represented by a decimal
that neither repeats nor terminates.

Examples of irrational numbers are

√2, 4.626578…, 𝑒 and π.

e symbol, it refers to a mathematical expression for the base of

the natural logarithm. This is represented by a non-repeating
number that never ends. The first few digits of Euler's number
are 2.71828.

𝜋 symbol is the Pi, It was devised by British mathematician

William Jones in 1706 to represent the ratio and was later
popularized by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler. The
first 10 digits of pi (π) are 3.1415926535

the subsets that are under rational numbers

Please take a look at the Figure below is a Venn diagram that

shows the relationship of various kinds of numbers in the real
number system.

Rational or irrational those are real number

4. Elaborate Collaborative Activity

10 minutes
Perform Activity 2: Look Around in LM pp. 77
1. Define and describe each classification of the real number system.
2. Select six students to sit in chairs in the front of the room facing the
class.
3. Give each student a sign to wear: (in this order) Real, Rational,
Irrational, Integer, Whole, Natural.
4. The remaining students will draw numbers from a container. As each
student reads his/her number, the students in the front will stand if the
number meets the constraints of their classification

5 -4 -0.03 3/2 0.7 3 14 ½

28 -45 ¼ /4 12/3 -54 12/3
36 0.23 √2 -1 -0.3 -6 -0.3
53 54.25 √ 25/9 -31 -7.21 ¾ 0.1

6. Introduce the concept of graphic organizer in classifying the subsets

of real numbers.
7. Select a student to classify numbers using graphic organizer on the
board.
ASK:
1. How do we classify each number?
2. Do rational and irrational numbers stand at the same time? Why?
3. How do you compare the numbers that belong to rational numbers?
4. Why Real always stand in each draw?

5. Evaluate Assessment.
General direction: This is 20-items test, read each directions
written in every type of test, answer this test in 15 minutes.

5 minutes For questions 1-5. Name the subset(s) of numbers to which each
number belongs.
1. √7
2. -16.28
3. √81
4. -9
5. 6 17

For questions 6-10. Determine whether the statement is TRUE or

FALSE.

6. All whole numbers are integers.

7. Some fractions are irrational numbers.
8. Every rational number is a decimal.
9. Zero is a counting number.
10. Set A = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …} is the set of whole numbers.

Answer key:

For question 1-5;

1. Irrational
2. Rational
3. Rational, Whole, Integer, Counting
4. Rational, Integer
5. Rational

For question 6-10;

6. True
7. True
8. False
9. False
10. True
