LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS IV The Real Number System I.

Objectives At the end of the lesson, with 80% proficiency level the students are expected to: a.) determine the various categories of numbers in the set of Real Numbers, b.) categorize all the given numbers picked randomly from the set of Real Numbers, and c.) manifest appreciation of knowing real numbers through a game. II. Subject Matter Topic: The Real Number System References: Francis R. Cruz, Phoenix Mathematics IV; pp. 1- 2 Materials: Visual Aid and Flash Cards, Chips (Manila Paper, Cartolina, Chip board) Pentel Pen. III.Procedure Teachers Activity A. Preliminary Activities Greetings Good morning class! How's your morning? Very Good! Prayer Please stand for the prayer Checking of Attendance Who is absent today Very Good Setting of Classroom Standard What should I expect from you while we are having our class? Very Good! B. Review What is a number class? and How about an integer? How many are those numbers? Very Good! - A concept of quantity derived from zero units - Any of the natural numbers (positive or negative) or zero. - It is infinite sir. Student's Activity

- Good morning sir! - Very fine sir!

- Everybody stand - None sir

- Listen, participate to our class activity, Raise a hand if wanting to ask question and behave sir!

C. Lesson Proper 1. Motivation (Give them numbers in various formats) - Can you group these numbers according to what you think is appropriate? Everybody should participate. 2. Unlocking of Difficulties (Show flash cards to the class) Will you please read what is this! - Rational Number - Irrational Number - Integer - Natural number - Real Numbers - Very Good! - Actually the numbers that you have encountered a while ago belongs to a

- yes sir!

a system. Now, may I ask you, do you know what topic are we going to tackle this morning? - The Real Number System Sir - Very Good! 3. Generalization (Visual aids are displayed, they will exhibit the concept and principle of the Real Number System) The student will be given a time to interpret the content of every visual aids, their effort will be enforce by some questions that will guide them in unlocking the principle and concepts the Real Number system.

THE REAL NUMBER SYSTEM

Real Numbers
ex.) U = {-4, -2.75, -4/5, -3/2, -5/5, -1, -1/2, 0, 1/2, 2/2, 1.25, 2, 2.16173....., 5, 2.2525..., 3, , 10/3, 16}

Rational Numbers
A = { -4, -2.75, -4/2, -3/2, -5/5, -1, -1/2, 0, 1/2, 2/2, 1.25, 2, 2.52525..., 3, 10/3, 16}

Irrational Numbers
B = {2.161773..., 5, 3, , }

Non-integer Rational Nos.

C = { -2.75, -3/2, -1/2, 1/2, 1.25, 2.252525..., 10/3}

Integers
D = { -4, -4/2, -5/5, -1 , 0, 2/2, 2, 3, 16}

Negative Integers
D = { -4, -4/2, -5/5, -1}

Whole Numbers
E = {0, 2/2, 2, 3, 16}

Natural Numbers Zero, 0

F = { 2/2, 2, 3, 16}

Characteristics of Rational Numbers Rational numbers are those Real Numbers which can be expressed as quotient of two integers. A number with a rational representation. ex. 1. 75 = 7/4 1.25= 5/4 3 = 6/2 Decimal representation that either terminating (ex. 1.25, 1.75, 1.125) or non-terminating but repeating (ex. 1.2525....., 0.312312....., 5.3333...). Characteristic of Irrational Number Numbers that cannot be written as a ratio of two integer since it has no definite value. It is non-terminating and non-repeating decimal number. (ex. 0.132453795......, 6.4056824...) Essential Questions: 1. What are the two major Classifications of Real Number? 2. What is Rational number? 3. How will you determine if it is an Irrational number or a Rational Number?

D. Application The class will be grouped in three. Each members of the group will have a chance to play, one player at a time. The three players will simultaneously pick a chip with a number written on it. After picking, they will go back to their respective team to show, the number. The other group members can suggest what appropriate category the number will fall. The process will be repeated until all the team/ group members will be able to pick number and all the numbers are all picked. After the categorizing activity, the facilitator will check if the players did it correctly. Each correct number placed on an exact category will be equal to one point. We will award one point if it was placed in a correct category and two points if it was placed in the most appropriate and ultimate category. The team with the highest total points will be declared winner.
