B. Lesson Proper
Boyle`s Law
 Is the basic law in chemistry describing the behavior of a gas held at a constant
temperature.
 The law can be derived from the kinetic theory of gases assuming a perfect (ideal)
gas.
 The law, discovered by Robert A. Boyle in 1662, states that a fixed temperature, the
volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure exerted by the gas.
 Boyle was Born on January 25, 1627 in Ireland. And he died on December 31, 1691
at the age of 65 in London England.
 Founder of modern chemistry.

MEASURABLE PROPERTIES OF GAS

1. VOLUME OF A GAS – is the amount of space occupied by the gases. Gases have the
tendency to occupy all the spaces of the container that they are confined. The common
units used in expressing the volume of a gas are liter (L) and milliliter (mL).
2. TEMPERATURE OF A GAS – is the measure of the hotness or coldness of an object. It can be
measured in Celsius or Kelvin.
3. PRESSURE OF A GAS – is the average effect of the forces of the colliding molecules. It can
be measured in atmosphere, torr, psi, and mmHg.
C. Development of the lesson
ACTIVITY (BY GROUP)
Explain on how the temperature, volume, and pressure can be measured?

D. Guided Practice
ACTIVITY (BY PAIR)
Directions: Read the definition in Column A and match it to the correct word in
Column B. Write the letter of your answer on a clean sheet of paper.
Column A Column B
1. Force per unit area a. Volume
2. Amount of the gas measured b. Pascal
3. International unit of pressure c. Pressure
4. Degree of hotness or coldness d. Mole
5. Space occupied e. Temperature
f. Density

E. Independent Practice
ACTIVITY (INDIVIDUAL)
1. Who was the English scientist who studied the relationship between the
volume of a gas and its pressure?
a. Amedeo Avogadro c. Jacques Charles Combine
b. Gay-Lussac d. Robert Boyle

2. Which statement describes the volume-pressure relationship in gases at

constant temperature?
a. As pressure decreases, volume increases.
b. As pressure increases, volume also increases.
c. As pressure increases, volume remains constant.
d. As pressure remains constant, volume increases.

3. Which of the following quantities are inversely proportional in Boyle’s Law?

a. number of moles and volume c. volume and pressure
b. pressure and temperature d. volume and temperature

4. If the volume of a container of gas is lessened, what will happen to the pressure
inside the container?
a. The pressure will increase.
b. The pressure will not change.
c. The pressure will decrease.
d. The pressure will depend on the type of gas.

5.If a balloon is pressed, what happens to the pressure of the gas inside the balloon?
a. It decreases.
b. It increases.
c. It stays the same.
d. The pressure depends on the type of gas in the balloon.
F. Application

Boyle's law in action can be seen in a balloon. Air is blown

into the balloon; the pressure of that air pushes on the
rubber, making the balloon expand. If one end of the
balloon is squeezed, making the volume smaller, the
pressure inside increased, making the un-squeezed part of
the balloon expand out.

G. Generalization
1. Describe the properties of Boyle`s Law that can be measured?

IV: EVALUATION
QUIZ #2
Describes the pictures that shown below. Write BOYLE`S LAW if the pictures shows Boyle`s law and
write NOT if the pictures shows is NOT a Boyle`s law.

1.
2.

V. ASSIGNMENT
Directions: Given the unit, identify the measurable property.
Unit Measurable Property (pressure,
volume, temperature)
1. Atmosphere
2. Kelvin
3. Liter
4. M3
5. Pascal
