LESSON 1 Learning Competency 69
Solid figures are figures with length, width, and thickness. They are
also called space figures. Space figures are made up of plane figures. A box, a
ball, and a canister are examples of space figures. The following are examples
of solid figures: Cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and sphere.

Read this,
A cube is made up of six equal squares. These equal squares are called faces
of the cube. The corners are called vertices while the sides are called edges. A
cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges.

Solid figures bounded by plane faces are called polyhendra. A cube is
polyhedron bounded by squares.
Prisms
Prisms are polyhendra made up of two parallel bases that are polygons of
equal areas and rectangles as sides. Prisms vary according to the plane figures
that are used as bases.
A prism with square bases is called a square prism. It has four rectangles as
sides.
A prism with triangles as bases is a triangular prism.
It has three rectangles as sides.
A rectangular prism has rectangles as bases and has four rectangles as sides.
Pyramids
Pyramids are space figures with only one base and triangles as sides.
A square pyramid has a square base and four equal triangles as sides. A
triangular pyramid is made up of a triangle as base and three triangles as
sides. It is also called tetrahedron. The base of a rectangular pyramid is a
rectangle and it has four triangles as sides. A pyramid is a polyhedron whose
base is a polygon and whose other faces that shares a common vertex.
Cylinder
Now, do these.
REMEMBER:
Solid figures are object that take up space.
Some solid figures have curved surfaces.

II. Complete the sentece by choosing the correct word in the box.
Makes models of different solid figures; cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone and
sphere using plane figures.
In lesson 1 you have learned the different kinds of solid figures. You
have also learned the number of faces, edges and vertices a solid figures has.
In this lesson you will learn to make models of the different solid
figures.
Read this.
1)
Let’s try this activity to make solid figure. Follow carefully the net for a
cube.
Step 1 Cut out three nets ( you can use cartolina or any thick clean paper.)
Step 3 Make a table to record the name of each figure you made. Write the
number of faces, edges, and vertices of each figure.
2)
Step 3 Write the name of the figure you have just made. Then write the
number of faces, edges and vertices. (Use one table. The table you
prepared in the first model.)
5)
6)
REMEMBER:
To make models for the different
Solid figures, you have to prepre a pattern or a net.
A net is a plane pattern that can be folded to make a solid figure.
Self-Test (Lesson – 2)
1.
A. B. C. D.
II. Name the solid figure that can be made with each net.

SUMMARY:
1. In this module you have learned to describe the different kinds of solid
figures, their faces, vertices, and edges.
Face Vertex

more faces meet

solid appears to rest)
(segment formed where
two faces meet)

2. You have learned to make models of different solid figures using a net or a
pattern and following the stpes.
