STUDY Module 1: PREHISTORIC AND ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE


1.1 Prehistoric Architecture
I. Early Dwellings
a. Dwellings (Rock caves)
1. Tents
- Made from tree barks, animal skins and plant leaves.
2. Huts
- Usually made-up reeds, bushes and wattles.
3. Trullo
- Dry walled rough stone shelter with corbelled roof.
4. Tipi
- Conical tent with wooden poles as framework.

b. Religious Monuments
No organized religion.
The dead are treated with respect thru burial rituals and monuments.

1. Menhir – A prehistoric monument consisting of an upright stone, usually standing


alone but sometimes aligned with others in parallel rows.
2. Dolmen
- “Daul” – “Table”
- “Men” – “Stone”
- A prehistoric monument consisting of two or more large upright stones
supporting stone slab or capstone.
3. Cromlech
- Circular arrangement of megaliths.

c. Burial Grounds

ARCHITECTUAL CHARACTER:
 Material (Animal skins, Wooden frames, Animal bones)
 Construction System (Existing or excavated caves, Megalithic)
 Decoration (By Hand or manual)
