Objectives of the Present lecture
3

 To explain how to determine the area moment of inertia of

various engineering sections.

GE201: Dr. Abdulrahman AlKhomairi December 6, 2023

Problem-1
4

Determine the moments of inertia of the triangular area about:

(i) The base,
(ii) The parallel axis passing through its centroid,
(iii) The parallel axis passing through its vertex,

ii. The moment of inertia I about the centroidal axis
(a distance h/3 above the x - axis) :

h 1 3 1 h 1 3
I = I x − A  = bh − bh  = bh

iii. A transfer from the centroiudal axis to the x'-axis

through the vertex gives :

Problem-3
9

Calculate the moments of inertia of the area of a circle about a diametral axis
and about the polar axis through the center. Specify the radii of gyration.
