NA397 Speed Probe Data
The Napier approved speed measuring device on these units and their variants is the
inductive HF sensor with amplifier Type DSH 1840 Version SHV. This type of sensor is
suitable for generating speed signals from metallic (not necessarily ferrous) pole wheels.
E.g. an Aluminium impeller vane. This speed sensor works by sensing the aluminium or
titanium impeller. The sensing element is an oscillator circuit in the face of the sensor. A
compressor vane passing the sensor head influences the damping in the oscillator. This
modulation is converted to a square wave output signal by an amplifier.
The air gap does not influence the calibration of the system.
Speed probe part numbers are EJ3815 and EX3816 for all these applications. The two
items are identical except for the connector, with a metal Lemo type on the EJ version
and a Bendix amphenol type on the EX version.
The sensor senses a passing impeller vane, meaning that the number of pulses per revolution, is
determined by the impeller designation. The number pulses per revolution, that will be generated
by each impeller type, is shown in Table 6.3.
The signal generated is a square wave, the amplitude of which is not affected by the air gap or
speed. A typical signal is shown in Figure 6.4, this example being that generated from a NA297
GS Impeller. Given that thirteen pulses per revolution are generated by the GS impeller, a signal
with a period of 0.3ms equates to a frequency of 3.33KHz, and therefore 15,385 rpm.

6.2.2.4 Screening
Uninterrupted screened cable should be used for sensor connections wherever possible.
On the Lemo connector, the cable screening is connected through the pin as shown on both sides
of the connector. On the Bendix connector, the cable screen is connected to the 0v pin on the
sensor side (Napier provided) and should be terminated at the connector but not wired to it on the
client side.
For both types of connector the screen should be terminated at the instrument panel via 0v or via
internal capacitive coupling to 0v. Screens must not be connected to power earth, eg: in junction
boxes.
