Lyre Corps
Grade 5 MUSIC
DRUM AND LYRE
- instrumental ensemble that is popular in
the Philippines
- composed of percussion instruments:
tuned or untuned
DRUM AND LYRE
Tuned instruments: lyre- play specific pitches and
the melody
Non-tuned instruments: drums –play a specifc
sound without specific pitch, provide the
accompaniment and steady tempo.

INSTRUMENTS
MARCHING BAND SECTION
1. Snare Drums
- medium sized, non-pitched
instrument
- struck by wooden sticks either
on the drumhead, rim or shell
2. Tenor Drum
- set of four to six drums
- struck by mallets or sticks
either on the drumhead, rim or
shell
3. Bass Drum
- large, non-pitched instrument
- produces a low sound when
struck by a single, heavy felt
covered mallet
- used to mark time (start or stop)
4. Cymbals
- made of thin, round metals
- provide a colorful effect to the
overall sound of the band or
orchestra

MARCHING BAND SECTION
1. Bell Lyre
- main instrument
- consist of metal bars tuned in
chromatic scale
- two light hammers
2. Glockenspiel
- also called as orchestra bells
- a series of graduated steel
bars arranged in two rows
- wooden plastic mallets
- higher pitch than a xylophone
3. Vibraphone
- looks like glockenspiel and
xylophone
- produces a bell like sound
- it has a foot pedal
4. Marimba
- large percussion instrument
- similar to a xylophone but is
pitch octave lower
- made of rosewood keyboard
with brass pipe resonators
