CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Group works, in all levels of education from compulsory education to higher education, is
used as a mean of learning with the main purpose of serving as an incentive for learning. And
according to the research conducted by Lou et Al.., 1996; Gillies and Boyle, 2010, 2011, it
shows that there has been an increase in students’ cooperation in the classroom in the 20th
Century. This increase in the cooperation of the students in the classroom indicates that group
works provide positive effects for both students and teachers. Group work is given to students to
enhance and develop communication and interaction skills between individuals that was essential
in the professional world. Positive group experiences, moreover, have been shown to contribute
to student learning, retention, and overall college success (Astin, 1997; Tinto 1998; National
Group projects are simply a stage where teachers are preparing their students to reinforce
skills that are relevant to both group and individual work. It enhances ones’ ability to break
complex tasks into parts and steps, plan and manage time, refine understanding through
discussion and explanation, give and receive feedback on performance, challenge assumptions,
and develop stronger communication skills (Carnegie Mellon University). At present, there is
strong scientific support for the benefits of students learning and working in groups. Group work

Solving
STI College Balayan, like any other school, uses group projects as another means of learning for its
Grade 11 Senior High School Students, such an approach gives students a specific impact and benefits
that affect their academic performance and personal skills. Although students are using this means of
learning to accomplish their academic success, there is a growing body of research that addresses the
positive effects of group work on students. Furthermore, this means of learning enhances and develops
communication and interaction skills that was essential in the professional world.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand and to know about the impact and
major benefits of group projects for grade 11 senior high school students at STI College Balayan.
Second purpose is to understand the importance and benefits of cooperative, cooperation and
collaborative learning to all grade 11 students and the advantages and disadvantages of group
Research Questions
1. What are the impact of group projects in grade 11 students at STI Balayan?
4. How grade 11 students understand and get the main purpose of the group works that are being
accomplished?
Group works gives experiences which are monitored and selected in beneficial way. Group gives
experience and a sense of belonging of growing together to the members. Group provides
changes which are more paramount and can be obtained more quickly. Groups also helps in the
removal of difficulties created by exposure to previous learning. Groups are used as instruments
which are/economical in use, in place of scarce resources, groups can examine behaviour and the
general pattern of group behaviour. Group can help students develop a host of skills that are
increasingly important in the professional world. Positive group experiences, moreover, have
been shown to contribute to student learning, retention and overall college success. Students
engaged in group work, or cooperative learning, show increase individual achievement compared
to the students working alone. Students group work enhances communication and other
Summary
All students experience group projects and this can develop and improve their socialization, how
they interact and cooperate with different kinds of people, and know different perspectives from
other people by this study we could know about the impacts and benefits of group projects to
In this chapter, the research study of the benefits, and impacts of group projects were presented.
The samples of benefits and impact on students were introduced and had given a graphic
representation. Four research questions that guided this study were listed and assumptions of the
