INTRODUCTION

Teamwork has a very important role to play in various social fields. In


education, its role is attached much more importance because “teams and
teamwork help to promote deep learning that occurs through interaction,
problem-solving, dialogue, cooperation and collaboration” (Johnson &
Johnson, 2015). Also, teamwork paves the way for members of the team to
have a higher level of emotional security, self-confidence, and the ability to
plan and make decisions with others positively. Besides, teamwork is able to
create a friendly and healthy studying environment with creative activities,
positive strategies, high values. Most importantly, “Teamwork is always an
incredible lesson and an excellent way to gather basic life skills that make you
a better candidate for any position in business world.” (Magas, 2018).

At Hue University of Foreign Languages, students are required to participate in


numerous collaborative activities, such as group presentation and group
research projects, highly demanding the capacity to work with other individuals
effectively in order to achieve success. However, we realized that, in the
second year, although students have to get involved in a considerable number
of teamwork activities, many of them do not have a strong and clear perception
of teamwork. It is said that they always cope with various problems when it
comes to working in a team and and often struggle with accomplishing their
desired results.

Concerning that those issues could affect severely to the second-year students’
academic performance at the moment as well as their career in the future, we
decided to conduct this research with a view to figuring out difficulties that
they regularly deal with during working in a group and suggesting suitable and
efficient solution to tackle them.

II. Significance
We hope that the results of this study will be of great benefits for the following:

Students: they will be able to realize their own problems while working in
groups and also figure out the causes for those problems .From that they can
find out solutions to solve those problems as well as improve their teamwork
skills

Teacher: Realizing the importance of teamwork and difficulties of students in


teamwork activities, teachers will be able to find effective teaching methods to
help enhance student’s teamwork ability.

III. Research questions


1. What are common problems that English-majored sophomores at HUFCL
face when working in teams?
2. What are possible explanations for those problems?
