EFFECT OF COVID -19 PANDEMIC (Challenges and Experience in Nigeria)

INTRODUCTION

Good day Ladies and Gents

It is no longer a news that the recent outbreak of CoronaVirus Disease around

the world including Nigeria is a serious cause for concern especially the rate
at which the Virus is spreading across the Globe.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge

from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, The best way to
prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-
19 virus, the disease, it causes and how it spreads. It is however important that
individual and Corporate bodies take responsibility by protecting self and
others from infection by washing of hands or using an alcohol based hand
sanitizer to rub our hands frequently and not touching face or any opening
such as nose, mouth and ear.

Effect of Covid -19 in Nigeria

Fall in Household Consumption - The pandemic has weakened the Purchasing
Power of an average Nigerian thereby making it difficult to meet individual needs.

Decline in Investment – The uncertainties that comes with the Pandemic has
crippled businesses making Investors to be skeptical on where to put their money
and in which many have lost their wealth.

Loss of Means of Livelihood- Covid-19 Pandemic has put a lot of families in disarray
as their sources of income had been eroded. It is on record that the Nigerian
Government has not been able to give employment to a substantial percentage of
job seekers in the country meaning that the overwhelming majority of Nigerian
depend on themselves and other employers of labour which had also been
battered by the Pandemic. Yet governments at various levels are shying away from
their responsibility of providing palliatives to the populace.

Decline in affection for one another- Nigeria is a society where Culture and Religion
are taken very seriously, the introduction of social distancing as one of the antidotes
to Corona Virus Pandemic has made people to be isolated from one another
hence, family and societal bonding are fading away. The joy of meeting one
another every Sunday Service or at Friday Jumat and even Occasional Saturday
‘Owambe’ Party are no more available. Many People have been traumatized in
one way or the other.
PREVENTION

To prevent infection and to slow transmission of COVID-19, Concerned

Authority has advised that we do the following:
• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or clean them with
alcohol-based hand rub.

• Maintain at least 1 metre distance between you and people coughing

or sneezing.

• Avoid touching your face.

• Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

• Stay home if you feel unwell.

• Refrain from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs.

• Refrain from taking too much alcohol that weakens the immune
system.

• Consume fruits or vitamins that would boost your immune system.

• Practice physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary travel and

staying away from large groups of people.

MY OPINION

It is high time Nigerian government wakes up from her slumber, looks inward and
takes the bull by its horns. Nigerian government should stop doing the ‘follow, follow
and padi padi’ arrangement in combating the so-called Noisy Pandemic. For how
long are we going to be counting numbers of the victims? Imagine a Country of
over 200 million People has only been able to test just a little bit over 40 thousand
people, this is less than 5% of the Population. Are we serious at all?

Come to think of these:

How come the world did not shut down the economy when there was EBOLA
Virus outbreak back then?

How come Lassa fever did not get word attention as it is being given to
CoronaVirus?

Why is it that as deadly as ZIKA Virus is, no economy has been shut down to combat
it?

What about the other noisy HIV /AIDS as promoted by the WHO? Why is it that
Schools, Churches and Mosques were not shut down even as it lives with us?

How come all proposed cures for the so called disease have been jettisoned?
Truth must be told, is either the promoters of this Pandemic disease are cowardly to
apologize to the world for their misinformation or they know something they do not
want to share with us. Time will tell.

RECOMMENDATION

Governments at all levels as a matter of urgency should declare emergency on

palliative to the less privileged in the society with sincerity of purpose- This should be
arranged from CDA to the ward levels . Our Politicians understand this, they know
how to reach us when campaigning for offices only not to see us again for the
dividends of democracy after the election.

Tax waivers should be given to all SMEs and MSMEs for the 2020 financial year.

Indigenous Pharmaceuticals Companies should be encouraged to come up with

cures for the disease.

Oversea trips and Medicals tourisms should be suspended for now till everything
becomes normalized

Protection of Lives and Properties of the Citizenries should be considered paramount

or what is a government for? If security of lives cannot be guaranteed. People
should be able to sleep with their two eyes closed if there is a proactive and
responsive government.

Government should create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. Good

infrastructure will enhance efficient performance there by boosting the GDP.

Thank you all for your time and I wish everyone Happy 2nd year Celebration.

We shall all be alive to witness many more celebrations of this great Alumna.
