5. Singly reinforced rectangular sections. Determine the design moment strength of the sections given below,
knowing that f’c = 25 MPa and fy = 400 MPa.
a. b = 350mm, d = 570 mm, and As = 3276.6 mm2
b. b = 500mm, d = 800 mm, and As = 2580 mm2
6. From the figure below, determine the design moment strengths of the beams shown in the accompanying
illustrations if f’c= 28 MPa and fy= 420 MPa. Are the steel percentages in each case sufficient to ensure
tensile behavior; that is, t ≥ 0.005?

7. Rectangular section with compression steel. Determine the design moment strength of the sections given
below, knowing that f’c = 25 MPa, fy = 400 MPa and d’ = 65 mm.

8. Design a rectangular beam for a 10-m simple span to support a dead load of 20 kN/m (not including beam
weight) and a live load of 30 kN/m. Use ρ = 0.5ρb, f’c= 28MPa, and fy = 420 MPa, and concrete weight is
23.5 kN/m3. Do not use the ACI thickness limitation.

9. An 3m-span cantilever beam has a rectangular section and reinforcement as shown in Figure below. The
beam carries a dead load, including its own weight, of 22 kN/m and a live load of 10kN/m.
check if the beam is safe to carry the above loads, using f’c = 28 MPa, fy = 400 MPa and As = 11.6 cm2

10. Determine the allowable uniformly distributed service live load (LL) on the beam assuming the dead load is that
due to beam self weight.

t = 100mm, and web width of bw = 250mm to carry a factored moment of 750 kN.m. Given: f’c = 20 MPa and fy =

19. A rectangular beam has the dimensions shown in the figure and is loaded with a uniform service dead load of 40
kN/m (including own weight of beam) and a uniform service live load of 30 kN/m. Design the necessary shear
reinforcement given that fc’ = 28 MPa and fy=420 MPa . Width of support is equal to 30 cm.

21. The cross section of a short axially loaded tied column is shown in Figure. It is reinforced with 6 Φ16mm bars.

22. Design a circular spiral column to support an axial dead load of 2230kN and live load 890 kN using f’c = 28 MPa;
fy = 400 MPa and steel ratio about g = 3%. Also, design the necessary spirals.

23. Design a rectangular tied short column to carry a factored axial load of 2000 kN. Use f’c = 30 MPa;
fy = 400 MPa, column width b = 300 mm, and steel ratio about g = 2%.

24. Design a square tied column to support an axial dead load (DL) of 300 kN and a live load (LL) of 400kN
using f’c = 25 MPa; fy = 400 MPa and steel ratio about g = 1.5%. Design the necessary ties.

25. Determine the balance compressive force Pb, eb and Mb for the column section shown below. Use A’s = 3DB30, As =

failure condition, the 2nd layer bars are not working. Does the column have enough strength to support the external
load, Pu?
Given: column with 10DB22, f’c = 28 MPa; fy = 400 MPa.
32. A column with cross section b = 300mm, h = 300mm, d’ = 48mm, Steel at four corner 4DB16. It is a non
sway column with Lu = 5 m. Does the column have enough capacity to support permanent load Pd =
100kN and moment Md = 12kNm and also live load PL = 80kN and moment ML = 8kNm. The moments
on top and bottom of column are equal. Use f’c = 25MPa and fy = 400MPa.

33. Design a 3.8m simply supported slab to carry a uniform dead load (excluding self-weight) of 5.8kN/m2
and a uniform live load of 4.8kN/m2. Use f’c = 21MPa and fy = 400MPa.

34. The cross section of a continuous one-way solid slab in a building is shown in Figure below.

The live load on the slabs (LL) = 7.5 kN/m2
Design continuous slab and draw a detailed section.
