DESIGN OF SINGLY REINFORCED BEAM:

PROBLEM 1:
A 5 meters simply supported beam with an overall depth of 450 mm and an effective depth
of 380 mm and a width of 300 mm carries a superimposed load of 16 kN/m, a live load of 14 kN/m.
Concrete strength of f’c= 28 MPa, fy= 415 MPa. Determine the number of 16 mm bars to resist
the loads. Use 24 kN/m3 for unit weight of concrete.

PROBLEM 2:
Given:
f’c= 21 MPa
fy= 414 Mpa
Mu= 215 kN-m
effective depth = 530 mm
b= 400 mm
Required:
Area of reinforcing steel

DESIGN OF DOUBLY REINFORCED BEM:

PROBLEM 1:
Design the reinforcement of the beam section whose details are listed below to
carry an ultimate moment of 600 kN – m.
GIVEN:
b = 250 mm
f’c = 35 MPa
d = 500 mm
fy = 400 MPa
d’ = 70 mm

PROBLEM 2:
A rectangular beam has b = 300mm and d = 490mm, f’c = 27.60 MPa and fy = 276
MPa. Compression steel if required shall have its centroid 60mm from the extreme
compression fiber. Calculate the required steel area if the factored load Moment, Mu =
620 kN – m.
PROBLEM 3:
The cantilever beam shown is to carry the loads P and w. The concentrated load
P consists of PDL = 55 kN and PLL = 34kN. The uniform load w consists of wDL = 19
kN/m (including beam weight) and wLL = 11kN/m. The prescribed beam size is b =
300mm, d = 430mm and d’ = 70mm. The materials properties are f’c = 25 MPa for
concrete and Grade 40 rebars. The span length of the beam is 2.20 mtrs. Design the
reinforcement of the beam.

PROBLEM 4:
A rectangular beam has b = 300mm and d = 460mm. The beam will be designed
to carry a service dead load of 230 kN – m and service live load of 190 kN – m.
Compression reinforcement, if necessary, will have its centroid 70mm from the extreme
compression fiber. Calculate the required steel area. Use f’c = 30 MPa and fy = 415 MPa.
DESIGN OF T-BEAMS
PROBLEM 1:
Design a T Beam for the floor system shown in the figure for which bw and d are
given, MD = 108.50 kN – m, ML = 135.60 kN – m, f’c = 27.60 MPa, fy = 413.7 MPa and
simple span = 6 mtrs.

PROBLEM 2:
GIVEN:
MD= 195 kN-m
ML= 210 kN-m
effective depth= 470 mm
bw= 250 mm
bf= 820 mm
tf= 100 mm
f'c= 20.70 MPa
fy= 414 MPa
SHEAR REINFORCEMENT
PROBLEM 1:
A Simply supported beam having a depth of 400mm, width of 250mm, and a
clear span of 5.70 mtrs is carrying a factored load 42.056 kN/m uniformly distributed.
Concrete compressive strength is 20.70 MPa and fy is 275 MPa. Stirrups diameter is 10
mm and steel covering up to reinforcement is 70mm.
a. Factored shear force at critical section
b. Required spacing at the critical section
c. Required spacing 2mtrs from support
d. If the beam is carrying an additional factored tensile axial load of 180
kN, find the spacing at critical section
