DINING
T he combination of wooden cladding alongside white walls
brings a rather inviting charm to space and keeping it neat and
less fussy makes it more functional.
The very Indian design of the chairs maintains the design lan-
guage lingering around the space.
T he kitchen has been kept minimal and functional with darker hues to avoid staining.
The ‘Less is More’ approach is the key to designing the functional spaces in a house.
Also, the idea of adding micro dining in the kitchen seems super-eff icient during break-
fast and mini-meals.

signature design element of Joshi’s work, has been cladded in exposed brick to mark its
importance in the hierarchy of spaces.
According to the designer, the staircase cabin is much more than just a transitional
space. He metaphorically treats this element as a mood board for the space giving it
a def inition of its own. In the penthouse, the staircase acts as a spine and has been
treated with equal proportions of classy and quirky. The ambient lighting f rom the
chic long hanging f ixtures creates a majestic f rame.

DUPLEX PENTHOUSE FINDING CLASSICAL IN MODERN
If there’s one word that most (if not all) homeowners seek
across the world, it’s “ideal”. And even though the word
is loaded with subjectivity, and prone to personal tastes,
agendas and philosophies, it def initely isn’t limited. In
India, the indef inite search for ideal often veers towards
the idea of space. And in our swiftly shrinking urban in-
f rastructures and habitat, f inding architectural and de-
sign balance that doesn’t end within the four walls of a
home is often perceived as pure utopia. So, when Vadoda-
ra-based Ace Associates—comprising principal architects
Nikhil Patel and Ashish Patel, along with Nilesh Dalsania
and Vasudeva Sheta—found themselves with a sprawling
3,200-square-foot property in the outskirts of Vadodara,
they knew exactly what buttons to push.

LIVING ROOM
T he ground floor is set in the colour palette of ivory, white and beige, and f inds itself
dotted with art that is rooted in classical paintings as well as crafts. The composition
is an elegant and classical language, which is quite apt considering this section of the
house—which comprises everything f rom bedrooms, living room, dining room, utility as
well as store rooms—is meant for the homeowner’s ageing parents. The mood, there-
fore, is serene.
DINING
T he minimalist design philosophy runs through the intricate detail-
ing of the house. Be it in the furnishings in muted colours (either cus-
tom-made by the f irm, or sourced f rom brands such as D’Decor, Ad-
dress Home or Futura, or imported f rom Bali) or the accessories and
lightings that accentuate the otherwise understated interiors, the ar-
chitects apply the power of “less is more” to echo the inherent calm-
ness of the surroundings.

H ome, they say, is what you make
of it. Ace Associates decided to tap
into the inherent calm and light of
the space. “The house, with its in-
f inite views, came with nature. It was
almost raw, so to speak. We decided
to work around the openness of this
space,” says Nikhil.

LIVING ROOM
T he client was fascinated by his travel to Greece and wanted his holiday home to re-
flect his love for it. We explored the concepts and realized that it’s all about using local
materials and being sustainable as far as possible in design. We visualized the space as
a white space with yellows and blues and various patterns and textures. We had to give
the client the experience of a holiday home that he admired keeping in mind that the
vernacular design sense should still remain but with materials that were available in and
around Pune.
The main door is Painted yellow to bring in the cheerfulness and excitement. As we
enter the living room everything around is in shades of white and then there are
browns, yellows, and blues splashed on the canvas. The jute carpet, the pots, and the
cane wall art are all handcrafted.

T he idea behind designing the master bedroom is to show a look, with an enlarged
alcove on the left hand side featuring a customized seating using a bright marsala red
fabric side sofa. The metal Lattice screen facing the west side, acts, giving a beauti-
ful play of light and shadow throughout the day with a green view through the bed.
Whereas the master toilet is designed keeping in mind a neutral pallet of teak wooden
console and grey f inish wall.
UPPER LEVEL
T he upper level comprises of master bedroom, daughter’s bedroom and son’s bed-
room. We have used Kota in combination with other Indian stone to create different
geometrical patterns in different areas, showing a tinch of drama with the flooring, like
entrance lobby, terrace etc. The common idea behind designing the rooms was that it
had to be a bright happy space f illed with colours and plants giving it an elegant yet
understated look.
T he son’s bedroom faces the rare view in the north giving it the same f ilter as other
rooms. Featuring a tribal art behind the wall, with playful colours and continuing the
hues through the upholstery bed. The wardrobe shutters are made of wooden strips
acting as a screen giving the room a unique look all together. All the furniture in the en-
tire house is customized. The son’s toilet has a very seamless look paired with satvario
tiles with vertical grooves depicting panelling and grey flooring along with a wooden
console.

The daughter’s bedroom features the bed made with a wooden headboard and combination
of wicker maintaining the language of the entire house with muted colours followed by the
metal Lettice screen window facing the west side.

the muted blue-grey of the overall furnishings. A wooden partition screens off the din-

“The clients wanted this partition to be movable, but the mechanism would have re-

LAYOUT
T he challenges faced by the designers during the process of design - As the design
and color palette were kept quite minimal, there’s always a risk of the space appearing
cold, so balancing the minimalist design while giving the space the warmth a home
should have, was a welcoming challenge.
DINING
T he spatial conf iguration/flow: The
public areas such as living, dining and
kitchen areas and the private areas (i.e.
bedrooms) of the house are separated
horizontally by the staircase, which also
leads to another bedroom, a home the-
atre and a private terrace. As we know
the space has a long major axis, it is
divided in two parts vertically by the
passage right in the center. The flow
of the space in the apartment is neat.
STAIRCASE
T he highlights: The penthouse inspired by the Scandinavian
modernism, boasts lighter color palettes throughout, while the
staircase connecting to the terrace of the penthouse becomes
the centerpiece as the staircase that is made by clear glass,
metal and wooden planks. All three materials skillfully fuse to-
gether to transform a basic necessity into a statement piece.

SITTING
T he living room, drawing room and the kid’s playroom open up into thecentre
double height lobby creating a fluid public zone of the house. During the day the
inhabitants mostly use the lower floor and wanted their kids to have a space to spill
over. Hence a play room was conceived and designed as an interactive space for
the kids to spend their time with the family. Also another secluded meeting area is
a part of the lower floor where the inhabitants entertain any off icial meetings. This
zone can be completely shut out of the common areas ensuring a peaceful work zone.
DINING KITCHEN
Dining Room - Giorgetti dining table, Cattelan Italia dining chairs, eight-piece pendant lighting
arrangement by Bocci. T he services are compacted and concealed throughout the house, to stay true to the
minimalist anatomy. Even the kitchens have concealed storages. Hence the walls are
perceived as a single monolith.
“The color palette is largely composed of neutrals grey, black and white tied togeth-
er in one rhythm with the use of wood. The color in the house is brought by the tapes-
try, upholstery and art work. The carpets rugs and art collection is carefully curated
with respect to the family’s taste. Each work of art has a story and history to itself.
For instance the ‘Venice console’ demonstrates the value of timber by using histor-
ical poles reclaimed f rom venetian canals. Each room is embellished with exclusive
furniture pieces & wall arts which are not just iconic but are rich in meaning as well.”
BEDROOMS
T he upper floor bedroom layouts were also crafted to take advantage of the exquisite
view through the windows. This also formed an inspiration for personal seating dens or
reading corners that added a new character to each room.
BATHROOMS
T he inert spaces like the bathrooms have a subconscious sense of greens. We devised

LOUNGE ROOM
I n the interiors we tried to use natural materials like solid wood and stone in ma-
jority along with some brass to add glitz. The entry of both the houses has wooden
ceiling and wall cladded in wood, to create a sense of a warm enclosure upon arrival.
The formal drawing room gives the sense of maturity with a formal sitting of olive, tan
and grey. Decorative light f ittings and a simplistic but artful wall mural sits in the room.
The same space in the other apartment has been converted into an informal lounge for
the family. Herein we have highlighted a wall with solid wood and brass panelling to add
glamour, while the rest of the walls have been kept subdued and simple.
The furniture adds colour to the space; with the main sitting cluster having a tint of
lemon yellow and lilac, along with two violet lounge chairs. The central lighting cluster
with a floating prof ile takes the centre stage and enhances the overall ambience of the
space. Both these spaces are extended into balconies. A beautifully customized jhulla
(swing) adds life to the balcony. Having a swing in the house is one of the elements that
every traditional Indian household has, we thus decided to put up different kinds of
swings in both the balconies.
LIVING ROOM
T he living and dining space have an
openlayout. In one pent-house, the
long linear wall of the living area is
done in patterns inspired by S.H. Raza,
with tint of light aqua-grey. This wall
continues in the double height of the
staircase as well. The same wall in the
other house has been done in william

tervals. The furniture of the living room
is done in soothing earthy tones of tans
and blues. Most of the furniture is cus-
tomized f rom Italy, with sleek metal
body and ever so comforting cushion-
ing.
DINING
T he backdrop wall of the dining ta-
ble is again treated differently in both
the apartments. In one apartment

crockery unit and a customized wall
mural sits as a backdrop. While an or-

STAIRCASE
T hese houses are the perfect example of having different approach to design for each
pent-house apartment and yet making them seem like a whole. The common factor in
both being the brief of the client wherein he wanted a glamorous and modern space to
call his home.
M. BEDROOMS
B oth the master bedrooms, in different apartments, are treated differently. While one
has a material palette of metal and wood the other has brass as an alternate material to
make it more glamorous. The colour story in fabric remains subtle and similar with the
use of tan and teal, yet remains interestingly distinct.
E ach bedroom has a its own unique color palette and styling, while keeping solid wood
as a material for continuity. Pastel tones of tan, beige, blue, grey, olive green and peach
have been used in various combinations in bedrooms in its fabric, furniture, drapery and
walls. Each of the drapery and fabrics were crafted by a textile designer to enhance the
charm and quirk of every space.
KID’S ROOM
T he client’s 6 year old daughter had 2 spaces dedicated to her. One
beingher bedroom and another being a play room. The bedroom has
pastel tones to add on to the softness of the bedroom. The niches in
furniture gives her enough space to display all her toys and games.

LIVING ROOM
T here are 2 zones formed while entering into the foyer – the living room and the stair-
case area. Two of those areas merged to form one whole space. Hues of greys and whites
were brightened by the arrangement of a contrast royal orange colour. The intention
was to create warmth by emphasizing more on the colour theme of the material used.
This living room creates a smooth transition between the bedrooms and dining/ kitchen
by breaking the inbetween space in the least possible manner
T o add to the uniqueness of the house, instead of doing the typical wooden panelling,
we designed the panelling by using irregular sized and thickness handmade cut stones
f rom the mines which weighed of 1600kgs.
There was an AC grill on the flyash wall hence the wall wasn’t connected to the slab
which made it structurally impossible to rely the load of the stones on it. For that
an entire MS structure was created where ply was used in between and on that the
stones were f ixed through a very high bonding adhesive.

T he staircase is highlighted as one of the main features of the
living room by giving it a very sleek look and using glass for
KITCHEN & DINING railing, hence maintaining the visual connectivity towards the
dining. The use of glass as partition between the rooms also
maximised the natural light that the house had to offer.
T he requirement to give more openness, the areas between the dining, kitchen
and living were also partitioned using the german technology 9 ft tall glass sliders
so the vision would not be blocked and the prominent smell f rom cooking could be
obstructed.
W ith the concept of designing the house in a traditionalized modern way, we went for a
natural palette for the flooring by choosing kota stone in the size of 4x4 ft which is a rare
size thereby bringing a uniqueness to it. To prevent the dullness f rom appearing, we gave
river f inish to the stone which went together beautifully with the entire rustic theme of the
house
M.BEDROOM
T he Master bedroom had a European concept which was again balanced out by the
use of handles f rom the traditional houses of Jodhpur onto the wardrobe shutters.
Material palette of Kota stone and wood is accentuated by self made textured walls.
BEDROOMS
T he bedrooms were also given traditional touch by doing wicker work on the
wardrobes and table in the guest bedroom.
BATHROOM
O ne of the major challenges faced while designing this house were
the bathrooms. Because the building was designed by german archi-
tects Blocher partners, they had a very specif ic style of doing plumb-
ing work which restricted us f rom changing the plumbing points ac-
cording to our requirement.
The area given for bathrooms also wasn’t big enough, hence glass
sliders were given majorly to divide the spaces without making the
area look small and maintaining the sleekness at the same time.

And this was the starting point of a great project.
LIVING ROOM
T he living room has a great double height volume which allows sunlight
and air to f ill up the space beautifully. It would only be unfair to not
respect this to its fullest. To do so we decided to do away with the walls
between the Living Dining and Kitchen area to make it appear like 1
large space. This not only enlarged ones view but also allowed maxi-
mum light and cross ventilation in the house.
T he 3 most essential materials used in the house are Wood, Metal and Concrete.
The Metal and Wood Staircase forms the backdrop to the living room and becomes
an architectural element. Metal sliding doors and railings are used to keep the look
as slim and minimal as possible. Hardwood in its natural form is treated in various
ways, we have tried to reuse even the smallest scrap of wood produced on site. Door

Spanning an area of 4000sq.ft, this duplex home’s design
brings together elements of nature, minimalism and spa-
ciousness. A 5bhk duplex home was divided between a
closely knit family of 2 sons, master bedroom, parent’s
room and a guest bedroom
T he challenges faced by
the designer during the pro-
cess of design -One of the
challenges we faced during
the ideation process was to
combine different elements
of the inter connected living
room space into each other as
all of it was visually open and
is seen together, so we had to
be careful that the elements
do not make the space look
very clouded. The entrance
Passage, the living and dining
space, a semi covered Tem-
ple area, a dining table space
which was seen through the
living room backdrop along
with a beautiful pedestal
wash basin, a f ish tank and
a huge sculptural staircase
connecting to the upper floor.
All these elements, the play
of different materials, linear
patterns, hues of colors all
juxtaposed into each other for
a very serene visual was one
of the challenges during the
ideation stage.

T he penthouse opens to a nice open layout into the living area. To mimic an entryway, SECTION THROUGH KIDS BEDROOM, DINING, KITCHEN AND SERVANT’S ROOM
we added a striking black credenza and anchored it with double mirrors in distressed
wooden f rames and completed the vignette by adding table lamps on either side.

LIVING ROOM
LIVING ROOM
T he informal living area, we customised a large blue sectional sofa with a pair of
mid-century modern armchairs in a suede f inish to add some warmth along with a
large neutral rug to anchor the space. We placed a wooden console table behind the
sofa which divides the formal and informal sections of the living room seamlessly with-
out disrupting the design decorum. Adding a rustic touch to the living room, we per-
fected a classic white brick f inish TV wall and a cabinet crafted with wooden slats on
the shutters which is both functional and visually appealing.
KITCHEN
T he kitchen features shaker-style cab-
inets in powder blue with brass hard-
ware and square white tiles in a brick
pattern for the backsplash. We broke the
monotony by adding a white and grey
patterned tile to highlight the break-
fast counter. Further, a tactful usage of
wood across the floor and for the open
shelves were used along with brass ele-
ments through the pendant lights that
hung over the breakfast nook that vi-
sually ties the kitchen with the dining
space.
DINING
W e quartered the dining space with a large jute rug on which the large eight-seater
natural wood tone dining table was paired with black dining chairs for juxtaposition. To
elevate the space, we added a tall wooden cabinet with handwoven wicker shutters and
a magnif icent brass sputnik light f ixture that anchors and brings the space together.
KID’S ROOM
We settled to nest the boys in an
ambiance that meets child and young
teens midway. The plaid patterned wall-
paper in grey shade and the wardrobe in
electric blue worked rhythmically with
the built-in study unit in a light oak f in-
ish. We separated the twin beds with a
chest of draws in between and installed
a floating bookshelf with the same oak
f inish next to the wardrobe for visual
balance. The gallery wall turned into a
muse to pin-up fun posters.
BALCONY
A large balcony connected to the living room provides a marvelous panoramic view of
the city. A perfect space to socialise with peers over some bubbly or spend some alone
time with your chai and watch planes take off f rom the runway. As the client is known
to f requently host f riends at home, we crafted an industrial themed bar counter with
wood and iron. Further, we also added an outdoor dining space to entertain guests.
O ne design element in the entire space that is close to the Designer’s heart -As
much as I like everything about the project I absolutely fell in love with the balcony and
the view and wanted to turn it into a space where the client could entertain f riends.
The balcony is quite huge and when the client mentioned that they wanted a bar
counter, we felt the balcony would be the best space for it and we gave it an industrial
look by going for materials like iron and wood. We also added an outdoor dining space
which makes it a great space for entertaining or even for a morning cup of coffee. .
The challenges faced by the designers during the process of design -The open floor plan
was quite challenging to work with as we wanted the space to be warm and cozy. But
once we started working on the layout we started adding elements which would help
us achieve that look and vibe that we were going for. We didn’t want to disturb the
flow of the space by adding any kind of wall partition, but we visually broke down the
space by adding wooden rafters to the ceiling for the living area which helps to divide
the living and dining area. We further divided the living room into two sections, one a
more formal section with two compact sofas facing each other which makes it great
for conversations. and then a more informal entertainment space with a large com-
fortable sectional sofa. Furniture layout played a great role in dividing the space and
making

W ith one complete side of the mas-
ter bedroom as a window f rom floor
to ceiling, the room was bright even
during twilight hours. Further, the cli-
ent wanted their master bedroom to
reverberate some calm and quiet. We
achieved it with a muted tone across
the space and added white wall panel-
ling and a customised neutral beige up-
holstered bed accompanied by a hand
woven bench at the foot of the bed and
a couple of walnut f inish mid-century
style nightstands to add to the subtle
texture. For their reading nook, we fan-
cied a dark grey armchair and added a
modern black floor lamp along with a
large white chest of drawers next to it
and anchored it with a grid styled gal-
lery wall with black and white artwork.
D esigning the room for the elders was very heartwarming. We ensured
that the space was comfortable to maneuver in with touches of mo-
dernity and past references that helped paint a story. We added
a vintage touch to the space by adding a wooden bed with spin-
dle details on the headboard and paired it with traditional night-
stands in white. Further, we created a space for their personal
book collection by converting the narrow alcoves on either side
of the window to bookshelves. With a light mint shade wardrobe
and a black shade TV console, we kept the room clean and simple.
BATHROOMS COLOURS
T he use of textiles plays a paramount role in adding colour to the
space. The use of locally sourced upholstery layered with hand-
crafted rugs & block printed fabrics f rom Rajasthan and hand-wo-
ven cushions f rom Nagaland complement one another by add-
ing dimensions to the visual language and set the mood for each
space. We also have used f ramed portraits of nature to bring in a
calm to the spaces.
MATERIALS
T he home has a contemporary mood brought in with metal f in-
ishes like iron and brass through different light f ixtures and ac-
cessories. Whereas, a variety of wood tones and f inishes in the
form of native wooden furniture pieces handcrafted by local ar-
tisans added a warm traditional touch to the home. This process
helped create a space that all members of the family could re-
late to.While respecting the client’s brief .i.e. A home with pristine
white walls, we brought in subtle textures with clay brick wall,
vertical wall panelling and wallpapers. The wooden rafters which
run across the ceiling of the living area became the most def ining
interior element in the space.
Iclient,

a warm and cozy home in a contempo-
rary style. She also wanted the space to
be primarily white, which was great be-
cause that way we could bring in a lot of
other elements to add life to the space,”
explains Sunita about the project begin-
nings.

The challenges faced by the designers during the process of design -There are many chal-

The colour palette used throughout the house complement the snowy mountaintops — the
formal areas are awash in taupe, beige and dove grey. Since it’s a family home, the first floor
takes on a brighter and bolder look with splashes of blue, green and aqua.

INTERCONNECTED AND OVERLOOKING SPACES, BOTH VERTICALLY AND
HORIZONTALLY, ARE USED AS A DESIGN STRATEGY TO CREATE A SENSE
OF A LARGE AIRY BUNGALOW.
LIVING ROOM
To further emphasise the sense of a
double level living space and to anchor
and create a focus in this large volume,
three lanterns carefully crafted in brass
of varying proportions were juxtaposed
here. The largest one, seven feet in diam-
eter, is partly cantilevered off the upper
floor to become a puja space. Another
mid-scale one, narrow and tall, became
a shell for a spiral stair that connected
the upper level to the terrace above. This
holds a cast aluminium and wood stair
that is lit f rom above with the skylight.
The smallest one works as a lamp over
the informal living space. All three lan-
terns were crafted using round brass
pipes bent to a soft shape recalling ves-
sels of light of earlier times.

amidst the living space in such a manner as if it was an integral part of it, which was
achieved by using a linear design along the straight lines of the space and working with
glass & metal design for the desired result.

home. The area, initially walled up, was later harmonized with the living room by re-

AFFLUENCE PENTHOUSE
INSIDE A FLAMBOYANT PENTHOUSE WHERE COLOUR AND
PATTERN SPEAK VOLUMES
The first thing you notice about this house are the coconut trees
on the rooftop. Curiosity gets the better of you and you want to
head straight to the rooftop. And that’s what we did. You hop
on to the elevator straight to the topmost floor. (Spread across
11000sqft, this penthouse stands two floors tall. ) What meets
the eye doesn’t disappoint you one bit. It must, unarguably be,
the most elegant sunroom youve walked in to. The raw brick
walls, accentuated with arched window frames in blue, the fur-
niture in a bright, cheery shade of mustard, with a generous
dose of green and the butterfly ceiling installations. It’s one of
those spaces where you can spend hours curled up with a book
and your favourite brew.
The sunroom sets the tone for the rest of the house. But
this house is designed not just to please, but to jolt you
with its mix of styles, and almost audacious design aes-
thetics. The penthouse is minimalist in parts and max-
imalist in others, yet it comes together with a cohesive
design narrative. It’s bold and resolute when it comes
to its approach to colour, pattern, texture or even scale.
Designed by Ahmedabad-based MetR Architects, this
penthouse bowls you over with its unique design lan-
guage.
LIVING ROOM
I nside, the home displays a varied texture and material palette, and a f ine harmony
of different styles. Talking about materials, the architects used more than ten different
types of marble in this residence. The formal drawing room embraces minimalism, the
richness of the space comes out through the use of materials and textures.

The public zone is a free-flowing seamless one that brings together functions of living, dining
and cooking. It is shielded from direct view from the main door with the help of a partition —
very lattice-like in elevation — that offers fragmented snapshots of the space beyond as well
as serves as a display point for the family’s extensive collection of travel souvenirs and art. The
orchestration of the bedrooms was dictated by family hierarchy and the clients’ request that
bedroom doors not face each other as a respect for privacy.

BEDROOMS
T he Master bedroom, the heart of the
house, combines exquisite luxury with
lightness. The ceiling is kept simple, with
the focus on the chic chandelier, with
modern furniture and decor elements.
Every element was carefully chosen to
create a single composition of lightness.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
What we loved about the project: All
our furniture was customized – we
changed up everything from bed
paneling to the dining table. We add-
ed wooden beading in all doors and
added a coat of Duco paint to blend
in well with the rest of the space.
BAR
T he interior design is an amalgamation of open spaces and a subtle
selection of colours and shades. The use of wood, marble, metal, and
delicate fabrics adds to its luxurious outlook. We added gold accents all Designed By: The Auburn Studio | Project Location: Anna Nagar, Chennai |
