Special Features
The normal PSG has a cast iron case and base and an aluminum cover. For
many years, PSGs were built with aluminum cases. Aluminum case psGs are
still available for special purposes. Aluminum case psGs are described in
Manual 370t3.

PSGs are built in many special configurations to meet the unique needs of
various engine manufacturers. Most of these special features are described in
chapter 6 of this publication. The psG uses hydraulic pressureto drive the
terminal shaft in only one direction. If an internal return spring is not used, a
spring must be installedbefore the engineis started.

use care while handlingand installingthe psG governor. Be particularly

careful to avoid striking the drive shaft, terminal shaft, or a speedsettini
device. Abusecandamageseals,internalparts,and factoryadjustments.Do
not setthegovernoron its drive shaft.

Receiving
After factory testing and calibration, the psG governor is drained of oil,
which leaves a light film of oil on internal parts to prevent rust. The
governor is then painted and external parts are coated with a spray
lubricant/rustinhibitor.

No internal cleaning or flushing is necessarybefore installation and operation.

The little oil left in the governor is clean, multiviscosity engine oil which will
not contimfnate an engine oil system.

Storage
The PSG governor nray be stored for short periods of time (less than a year)
as received from the factory. For long-tenn stoÉge (more than a year),
storage in an environment with large temperature changes, humid or corrosive
atmosphere,or if the governor is installed on the engine for storage, fill the
governor with oil and follow preservation packaging instructions in v/oodward
Manual 25075, commercial presematíon packaging
for storage of
M echanical-Hydr auli c Controls.

ExternalReturnSpring
The PSG uses internal oil pressureto move the ouput in the more-fuel
directiononly. A springis usedto movethe ouput in the fuel-offdirection.
If an internal return spring is not supplied, an extemar spring must be
installed. The returnspringmustprovidea rorqueof 2.g to 5.6 N.m (25 to
50 lb-in) on the terrrinal shaftin the fuel off directionfor a govemorwith 175
or 275psi operatingpressruerespectively.

Woodward Governor Gompany

Oil Supply
Almost all PSG governors use engine oil in the govemor. Some governors
use oil from a separatesump.

Supply Pressure
A minimumof 172kPa (25 psi) and a maximum of. 5r7 kpa (75 psi) oil must
be suppliedfrom the enginelubricatingsystem. If a separateiu*p i, usedthe
supplymusthavelessthan300 mm (12 inches)of suctionlift from the surnp.
Torque and work capacity will vary accordingto the amount of suppïy
pressureor suctionlift.

HorizontalGovernor Installation
If the govemor is mountedhorizontally, the needlevalve adjustmentmust be
on
the side and at the lowest level. Horizontal mounting also iequires that a drain

Linkagefrom Governorto Engine

connect the fuel-control linkage for 2/3 travel from no-load to maximum fuel.
Divide the unusedportion of the traver betweenminimum and maximum. Make
sure that the linkage will shut off the fuel at minimum position. The linkage
must be free from friction and looseness.

Most PSG governors have internal retum springs. The return spring must be
ableto move the fuel valve or rack to a closedposition. The psG
lovernor does
not supply hydraulic pressurecontrol in the minimum fuel directón.

LinearLinkage
use linearlinkagefor mostdieselengineapplications.Adjustthe fuel linkage

WoodwardGovernorGompany
NOTE

Be sure to allow sufficient overtravel at each end of terminal-shaft

travel so the governor can shut down the engine and also give
maximum fuel when required,

Non-linearLinkage
Applications involving a butterfly valve, such as a gas engine, require
a
nonlinear linkage.

Figure 2-5 illustmtes the relationship betweengovernor ouq)ut shaft and butterfly
valve obtained with simple linkage of maximum non-linearity. when instalin!
this linkage, make sure the two following conditions are attained when thé
linkage is in the no{oad position:

1. The lever which is attachedto the governor output and the connectinglink
are in line with the govemor output shaft and the point of attachmentof
the connecting link to the butterfly lever.

2. The butterfly lever is at 90o with the connectinglink.

Refer to the engine manufacturer's instructions for tle correet linkage selection
and installation.

Speed Adjustment
Thereareseveraltypesof speedadjustments
availablefor the psG.

Lever
some governors have a lever attached to the external end of the speed-
adjusting shaft. This lever is used in conjunction with the high- and low-
speed stop screws. using a linkage :uïangement with the levJr provides a
remote speedadjusnrent for the governor. The screw in the cover is used to
set the minimum-speed stop while the screw in the case controls the
maximum-speed stop of the govemor. The speed-setting shaft does not
usually extend from governors designedfor pneumatic or moior speedsetting.

PneumaticHeador Motor
The governor can be equipped with either a pneumatic speed-adjustrnenthead
or an electric motor for remote speed adjusunent (see chaptei 6 for details
about thesetwo types of speedsetting). Both of these speedsetting systems
use a high-speedstop screw.

GonstantSpeed
SomePSGsare equippedwith a speed-setting
screwin the cover. This is the
samescrewusedasthe minimum-speedstop with speed-setting
devices.

WoodwardGovernorCompany
Speed Droop
PSG droop is internally or externally adjustable between zero and
seven
percent. Speed droop, a reduction in speed setting as fuer increases,
is
expressedas a percentageof the difference between the lower full-load speed
and the high speed at no load. speed droop permits load division befween
two or more engines driving generators in parallel or connected to a single
shaft. If the engineis operatedalone or on a dc systemwith proper generaÍor
-(isoihronous
compounding, the governor may be set for zeto droop
operation).

NOTE

Negativedroop(governorspeedsettingincreases asload increases)

must not be set into the PSGgovernor. The governorwill not
provideacceptable controlwith negativedroop.

NOTE

If the governoroutput shaftdoesnot usethe full 213of available

Princi

lntroduction
This chapter describes the operation of the psG governor,
incruding a
descriptionof the hydraulic systemand the way it operat"s.

Figure 3-1 and 3-2 show the relationshipofthe various parts.

Operation

MechanicalHydraulicSystem
Figure 3-l shows thg oit suppry coming from the engine rubricating
sysrem.
It bypassesthe relief valy_e_ the governor oil punip where

pressure. Four check valves pennit rotation of the gorrÁ-o,
in either
direction- some models have two of the passagesplugged-for
rotation in one
direetion only.

Relief-valve dischargeis back to supply, so unused oil is recirculated

within
the governor.

Pressuredoil is supplied though oil passagesto the pilot-valve

system. The
pilot-valve systemis a three-wayspoàl valve. It applies pressured
oil to the
power cylinder when.an under-speedsignal is received
or releasestrappedoil
from the power cylinder when a over speedsignal is received.

oil flow into the power cylinder forces the power piston upward
againstthe
force of the return spring. pressuredoil dispiacestnt uureipiston
and forces
oil into the upper annulus.

Because all moving parts of the psG are irnrnersed in oil during
normal
operation the governor has extremely long wear without changes of
speed
settingor control ability.

BallheadSystem
Flyweights are attachedto the pilot valve's rotating bushing by pivot pins.
The pilot-valve bushing is driven by an external diive tom tnl èngine. A
thrust bearing, located under the speeder spring, rides on the toes of
the
flyweights. This allows the flyweights anà pilot-value bushing ro rorare
without extreme friction.

As the pilot-valve bushing rotates, the centrifugal force increases

and the

The buffer piston, locatedbetweentwo identicalspringsin the powerpiston,

stabilizesthe
governing action by minimizing over or undershoot follówing
a change in
governor speedsetting or a change in load on the engine.
Ii establishesa
tgmporary negative feedbacksignal (temporary droop) in the form
of a pressure
differential which is applied across thJ compensationland of
the pilàt valve
plunger. The flow of oil into or out of the buffer system
displacesthe buffer
piston in the direction of flow. This movementincreases
thé loading on one
spring while decreasingthe other and createsa slight difference in
the pressures
on either side of the piston. Thesepressuresare traÍrsmittedto opposite

The length of time that the pressuredifferential is presentis determined

The buffer piston and springs are carried in the power piston, but this location
has no bearing on the action of the power piiton, oi on the action of the
compensationsystem.

í9
Fuel IncreaseExample
The governor increasesfuel to the engine with an increasein governor
speed
setting, or a decreasein engine speeddue to an increasein load.
Either the
increase in the downward force of the speeder spring, or the decrease
in
centrifugal force of the flyweights, allowi the pitot-váve plunger ro
move
downward. Pressured-oil,isappliedthrough the control pott to th. buffer system
and into the power cylinder area. This causesthe power piston to rise
against
the terminal lever and rotate the output shaft to increasedfuel.

At the sametime, flow of oil to the compensationarea moves the bufter piston
from centerin the upward direction. ThJpressuredifferenceon each
side of the
buffer piston acts on the compensatingland, and tendsto centerthe pilot valve.
oil leaksby the needlevalve, and dissipatesthe pressuredifference.

with increasedfuel, the enginewill gain speed, the flyweights will retum to

the
upright position, cutting.offmovementof the power piiton át the new fuel sening
requiredby the changein load or speed.

Droop Feedback
The rotation of the output shaft in the increase direction will also
cause
movementof the floating lever if the pivot point on the speed-droopbracket
is
off the centerline of the ouput shaft.

Assumingpositive droop is set into the governor, the pivot point will be to the
left of the center line and increasefuel will raise the ino of the floating
lever.
This will-reducecompressionon the speederspring and in effect lower the speed
seuing of the governor.

Note th_atshould the pivot point on the speeddroop bracket be to the right the
of
center line, it will causethe floating Iever to inóreasethe compressionof
the
speederspring on increasedfuel, in effect increasingthe speedsetting. This
condition is called negativedroop. The governor will not provide satisfactory
control with negativedroop.

Fuel DecreaseExample
The governor decreasesfuel to the engine with a decreasein governor speed
setting or an increasein enginespeeddue to a decreasein load ón the engine.

Due to the decreasein speedsetting or decreasein load, the centrifugal force of

the flyweights overcomes the speeder-spring force and lifts the pilot-valve
plunger. upward movementof the pilot-valve plunger opens the contiol port to
drain and the power piston is forced in the reducedfuel direction by the retum
spring.

20 Woodward Governor Company

At the sametime, flow of oil from the compensationarea housedin the power
piston moves the buffer piston in the downward direction. The prèssure
differenceon each side of the buffer piston acts on the compensatingland, and
t-gnd: to cenrer the pilot-valve plunger. oil leaks by thJ needle valve, and
dissipatest-hispressuredifference. As the enginereturns to steady-statespeed,
the centrifugal fiorceof the flyweights is again balancedwith the downward.force
of the speederspring.

Positivespeeddroop, as describedabove, will causean increasein relativespeed

setting with a decreasein load.

Troubleshootin Maintenance

Introduction
This chaptercovers various stepsfor maintenanceof
the psG governor. The
portion on troubleshootingprovides information
if trouble o.io.r. General
troubleshootingadvice and instructions for setting the
needrevalve and droop
are provided in advanceof the troubleshooringchárt.

If the-minor adjustmentsdo not help, removar of the governor

from the engine
for either a complete overhaul or return to an authórized
repair facility for
r-enair and testing may be required. Adequate irstructions
are provided for
disassembly,reassembly,and testing of yóur governor.
However, the test
specificationsfor the particular governor must b; requested
from woodward.

GeneralTroubleshooting
Governor faults are usually revealedin engine speedvariation,
buÍ it doesnot
necessarilyfollow that such speedvariations indicate governór
faults. poor
governing may be due to faulty operation of trre
Àgine or of auxiriary
equipment.

Dirty EngineOil
The PSG governor is-.normalrysuppried with engine oil.
A failed or dirty
filter- in the supply rine or unusuar oil contamination can
cause governor
problems. If the governor has been contaminatedwith
dirty engineoii, it may
be removedfrom the engineand flushed with a petroleum
sotveït. The use of
non-petroleum-base solventsis not recommendedas it may damageoil sealsor
gaskets. Fuel oil or keroseneare the best solvents
for cláning tïe irnide of a
PSG governor.

CAUTION
Alwaysdrain the governorof solventsbeforeretumingit to the

Check List
Before determining that a governor is the cause of speed
variations or
aberrations,conductthe following checla of engine/gou"rnó.operation:

1. check the load to be sure that the speed changesobservedare not

the
result of load changesbeyond the capacity of thá engine.

2- check engineoperationto be sure that all cylinders are firing properly

and
that the injectorsare in good operatingcondition.

3- check the linkage betweenthe governor and the engine to make certain
there is no binding or lost motion.

4. Checkfor fuel pressurechanges.

5. check the speed-settingmechanismfor proper operation. pneumatic-

supply problemscan effect the pneumaticheid. Eiratic motor operation
or slippagein the clutch betweenthe motor and the governor can affect
motor speedsetting.

6. Checkthe enginedrive to the governor.

7. Check the oil supply to the governor.

SpeedDroop Adjustment
Figure 4-1 shows the intemal droop governor with the top
cover removed to
exposethe speed-droog and adjustrnents. The speeddroop bracket
lgchani,sm
is clampedto the terminal lever by the socicet_headscrew.

The speed-droopbraeket, when roosened,is adjustable radially

to the terminal
shaft. when the bracket is moved, a pin on the bracket is moved
radially from
the terminal shaft's centerlineto a radius of l/2 inch. This pin
controls the
position of the speed-drooplever (floating, position feedbacÉ
lever). when
the pin is set at the centerlineof the terminallhaft, the governor
is set at zero
droop. As the pin is moved away from the shaft's ceiterline, terminar-shaft
rotation moves the pin and, therefore, the end of the speed-droop
lever which
pivots on the speed-drooppin. The resultant speed ietting is
ï function of
terminal-shaftposition with speedsetting decreasingas fuel àow increases.

since there is no calibration-for the droop adjustment, the zero-droopposition

may be set only by trial and error on the engine, or by use of a dial
indicator
over the speed-drooplever during manual rotation of tíe terminal shaft.
zero
droop will show no movementof the speeddroop (feedback)lever
when the
output shaft is rotatedfrom minimum to maximum position. If speeddroop
is
required, it must be set by operation on the engine, readjusting the
slide to
obtain the desiredspeeddroop betweenfull load and no loaá.

NOTE

The governor shouldnot be operatedwith the cover removed. The

low-speedstop is locatedin the cover, and on most units the cover
retainsthe return spring. The governor will not provide dependable
engine-speedcontrol with the cover removed. Governàrs with
internal droop adjustmentmust have the amount of droop set with
the cover removedand the enginestopped.

SettingExternalDroop
some PSG govemors are equippedwith externally adjustabledroop. These
governors employ a lever inside the governor that moves a feedback pin
through a slot in the terminal lever. Droop on these governors can be
changedwhile the engineis running.

34 WoodwardGovernorGompany
NegativeDroop
care must be taken while setting droop, either the
intemar or externar
settings, that the moveable droop furcrum pin not
be moved beyond the
centerlineof the governor terminal shaft. This condition
will causeunstable
governor operation. lvhen setting zero droop,
it is better to eÍror in the
direction of slight positive droop. If using a dial indicator
while setting
droop, the feedbacklever must not increasethe tr*io' on
the-speederspring
while the terminal shaft is rotated toward maximum.

NeedleValve Adjustment
The needlevalve adjuststhe responserate of the governor. properry
set, the
responserate will cause the governor to take a new
fuel position with a
rninimum of overshoot and a minimum of settling time after
a loao change.
Adjust the needle valve when the engine is at operating temperature
and the
oil in the governor is at its normal operating rcmperan,,e and Iikewise
at the
normal viscosity. Adjust with the needlevalve as far open as possible
while
still providing stable responseto load changes. To test the ,.tting,
manually
disrurb the linkage and observe the return io stable operation.
Two or three
fuel movements immediately aft9r the speed deviation caused
by rhe linkage
disturbanceis usually the desired.esponsl setting.

Having the needle valve too far closed will make the governor
sluggish and
Iikewise will make the engine slow to respond to loaá changes.
-stableThis can
appear as engine power problems. Engine speed will not be
with the
needle valve too far open.

CAUTION

Do not back the needlevalve clear out of the threadsas hot oil will
squirt from the hole, potentially buming the operator.

The govemor will not operatecorrectly with the needlevaive closed

tightly. In
general, the needlevalve must be out l/g turn or more for
correct governor
operation.

Having the needle valve closed more than necessarywill prevent the
most
efficient and responsiveperformance of the engine. Iriost engrnesoperate
with
the needlevalve open one fu[ turn or mo.". bovernors are-strippeofrom
the
factory with the needlevalve open 1 and 114turns.

when properly set, the governorwill be slow in responseto load changeswhile

the engineis cold, becausethe oil in the góvemor will be thicker, and slower
to
move through the needle valve opening, Always adjust the needle valve
when
the engine is at operating temperature.

Linearityand OutputShaft Rotation

unstable
-engine operation can be caused by faurty linkage arrangement
between the governor and the fuel control. Tire terminal
shJft should travel
24 degreesbetween no load and full load. Travel of less
than 1g degrees
should be corrected rather than running the governor with the
needre valve
more fully closedthan necessary.

For maximum stability governor output must be nearly linear

with engine
power gain. (A percent of the total governor travel
wiu produce the sarne
percentagechangein the
-power output of the engine.) Adjusting the linkage
to increase the amount of governor travel berween no load and
firll load will
normally permit increasing the opening of the needle valve
and likewise
improving the responsivenessof the governor and engine to load changes.

Jiggle
The PSG is an extremelyfast governorand win normalry exhibit
ên acrive
terminalshaft. This terminalshaftactivity,or "jiggle", isïot connected
with
theresponseratescontrolledby theneedlevalve.

Excessivejiggle can damagelinkage, engine parts, fuel valves,

or the
governor.

Jiggleis ofterrthe governor'sresponse to drive torsionatstransmittedfrom the

governordrive to the governorballhead. Thesedrive torsionals
shouldbe
reduced,if possible. sometorsionalsare causedby the misalignment
of the
governor on the governor pad and can be corrected by realigning the
installation. In extremecasesit may be necessary to rebuild the-govirnor
drive. Oildampedandspring-driven ballheads are àvailableto f,rkerouÍ some
types of drive torsionals. worn or demegedgovernor parts can also
contributeto a jiggle problem. Nicls on the pilot-valve-plungircontrolland
areoccasionally the cause.Minor jiggle, which doesnot causóunduewearto
linkage, fuel valves,or engineparu, will not damagethe governorand in
most casescan be ignored. Jiggle which will causedarnasemust be

Removinga pSG Governorfrom the Engine

For major repairs, or a compretegovernor change, remove tl,e
govemor from
the engineas follows:

1. Disconnectthe fuel linkage from the governor terminal shaft.

Mark the
position of the lever on terminal shaft before removing the
rever.
2. Disconnectthe speed-adjusting linkage from the governor speed_control
lever. Mark the position of the lever on the speed--adjusting
shaft before
removing the lever. For erectric or pneumàtic spèea+eÍing
options,
disconnectthe electrical connectionoi the po.*n"ti" tubing fróm
the
governor.

3. Disconnectthe oil inlet connections.

4. Removethe four rpg holding the governor assembryto the governor

drive housing and lift the governor off the studs and away from
the
engine. (some installations use bolts to attach the governor to
the
govemor drive housing.) Removethe gasketbetweentÉe governor
and

NOTE

use care in handling and setting down the governor" Avoid striking the
end of the drive shaft a sharp blow as this could damagethe govemor oil
pump driving gear.

2. ExternalDroop:

a. Assemblethe speed-adjustÍnent
and droop-adjustrnentshaftsinto the
governor. (The droop-adjustmentshaft has a smaller roll-pin hole
than the speed-adjustment
shaft.)

b. Add the torsion spring (if used)to the speed-adjusÍnenrshaft, and

the speed-adjustmentlever. Notice that the 45degree notch on the
speed-adjustment lever must be up. use the appropriateroll pin to
attach the lever to the shaft. connect rhe toision spring io the
speed-adjustnnent lever, if necessary.

NOTE

The speed-adjustrnentshaft and the droop-adjustnent

shaft can be assembledfrom either side. Check to
make sure the assembly is correct for the final
governor installation.

Insert the droop-adjusting shaft through the bushing and attach the
droop-adjusting lever, relieved side toward the iase. with the
appropriateroll pin.

d.
Lttach the droop-link assembly to the droop-adjusting lever.
Normal assemblyis for the lever ro attachdirectiy tó the link with
the spacergoing on the side of the link away from the rever. The
speed-adjustinglever must be able to operate between the shafts of
the droop link assembly.

FinalAssembly
1. Assemblethe terrrinal lever and terminal shafts into the case.

2. Assemblethe floating lever to the speeda_djustinglever and the speeder

spring fork with the wire clip. The slot in the floating lever engagesthe
droop pin on internally adjusteddroop governors.

Testing
It is importantto test the governor, either on a test standor on the engineit
operarcs on.

woodwardmakesa test stand(8909-053)which makesthe testingof psG and

many other govemorssafeand efficient. Various adaptersare also available
to permitteststandoperationof a testPSGgovernor.

Specialtestequipment,while recommended, is not necessary

for the testingof
a governor. If accuratetestsare to be run on governors, contactlvoodward
Governor company and obtain a copy of the test specification for each
particulargovernor.

If adequatetest facilities are not available, makeminor testsbefore and after

installationon theengine.

Beforeinstallation, checkthat thereis no negativedroop by attachinga dial

indicatorto the governorcaseso the indicatorrod rideson top of the floating
lever directly abovethe pilot valveplunger(centerof the springfork on the
speeder spring).

Rotate the terminal lever from minimum to maximum fuel position and
observethe dial to seewhetheror not thereis movementof the floatinglever.
No movementof the indicatoris zero droop. upward movementof the lever
is positivedroop.

52 Woodward Governor Company

check the final droop sening with the governor operating on the engine. only
zero droop (isochronousoperation)or positive droop is allowed. If the bracket
is set on a previously scribed line, droop should be very close to the correct
amount.

Reset low-speed and high-speedstop screws to pre-measuredsettings after

installationon the engine. Make sure all linkagesare correctly installed. Then
start the engine.

WARNING

TO PROÏECT AGAINST POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY,

LOSS OF LI[E, and/or PROPERTY DAMAGE WIIEN
STARTING the engine, turbine, or other type of prime mover,
BE PREPARED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN
to protect against runaway or oyempeed should the mechanical-
hydraulic governor(s), or electric control(s), the actuator(s), fuel
control(s), the driving mechanism(s), the linkage(s), or the
control devices fail.

Assuming that everything is operating properly, turn the needle valve in as far
as it will go, tlen back it out until the enginehunts (about L and.l/2 turns). Let
the governor hunt for about a minute. This allows air to bleed out of the oil
passages.close the needlevalve to just enough to stop the hunt and provide
optimum performance.

check that the correct amount of droop is set and, if necessary, readjust the
droop bracket.

Test Equipment
'woodward
electric drive test stand (part numuer 8909-051) should be used to
test a reassembledPSG governor and to set the high-speedstop, the low-speed
stop, and droop before installation on an engine. (Many other test standswill
adequatelytest and calibrate the PSG governor.) The needle valve will still
have to be set for the individual responsecharacteristics of the engine.

Adapter kit 6995-637and multiplication drive assembly5337-509are required

for testing a PSG governor on a test stand.

Introduction
This chapter includes information about auxiliary equipment that your
governor may have. Using this section in conjunction with the other chapters
in this manualprovides instruction and paÍs for most psG governors.

Auxiliary equipmentsupportedby information in this chaDterincludes:

o Spring-driven,oildampedballhead
. Torsion spring
r Pneurnaticspeedsetting
. Electric motor speedsetting
. Externally adjustabledroop
. Temperaturecompensatedneedle valve
. Fuel rod
o Internal retum spring (vertical or horizontal)

Springdriven, Oif-dampedBallhead
A spring-driven, oil-dampedballheadservesas a filter for torsional vibrations
that originate in the drive to the governor. It consistsof a ballheaddrive cup
(driving element)driven from the rotating bushing. The ballhead rests on à
thrust bearingcarried by the driver. A torsion spring connectsthe ballheadto
the rotating bushing.

Torsional vibrations cause relative motion berween the drive cup and the
ballhead. This movementis inhibited by the action of a volume oi oil being
forced through a relatively narrow leak path, which provides the damping
action.

The ballhead fills with oil through a combination of pressure feed and
centrifugal action. The fill time varies with dimensional tolerances, governor
pressure, and oil viscosity. The ballheaddrains down partially on shutdown.

since the oil-feed circuit functions whenever the governor is operating, there
is a continuousflow of oil through the ballheadassembly. If thè supply of oil
is not clean, contaminates will accumulate in the ballhead and the ballhead
will eventually assumethe characteristicsof a solid ballhead. If the governor
is subject to excessivedirt accumulation, consider using a separat€sump
system.

check for dirt accumulationby holding the governor drive shaft and turning the
ballhead against its internal stop. Repeatin the opposite direction. Travel
should be smoothand about 22 degreesis eachdirection. Replacethe ballhead
if it does not return promptly to mid position when released.

Replacethe cover if it is damagedor dished. Damage is normally attributed to

rough handling.

check that the flyweights have no flat spots on the toes and that the flyweight
bearingsare not worn. Also checkpivot pins for wear or damage.

Torsion Spring
A torsionspringis providedon PSGsthat areequrppedwith an electricmoror
for speedsetting. The spring is also providedon governorsthat are not
equippedwith a speedadjustingshaft, and on govemorsthat are operated
below800rpm.

The spring forcesthe speed-adjustinglever to maintaincontactwith eitherthe

speed-adjustingscrewor the adjustingshafton the motor.

when usedwith externaldroop, the springmustmounton the speed-adjusting

sleeve,on the sideoppositethe droop-adjusting
shaft.

PneumaticSpeed Setting
Remote speed adjustment is provided through a pneumatic speed-setting
assemblyconsistingof a diaphragm, housing, oil reservoir, adjusting screws,
and pushrod, extending down through the cover to the floating lever. Air
signal pressureto the speed-settingassemblyis applied to an oil reservoir to
damp out oscillations of air compression. Oil pressure, acting on the
diaphragm, is transmitted by the pushrod to the governor floating lever,
increasingor decreasingthe speeder-springforce to produce a changein speed
setting.

Pneumaticspeedsetting is factory preset to specified minimum (idle) speedat

a minimum control air pressureof typically 21 kPa (3 psi), and to specified
rated speedat a maximum control air pressureof typically 103 kPa (15 psi).
Field adjusnnentis not normally recommended.

The schematic diagram of a PSG with horizontal return spring and pneumatic
speed setting illustrates the relationship of the speed setting head to the
govemor speedsetting system.

In an overhaul or repair situation, the main parts that may need replacement
are the bellofram seals, rolling diaphragm, springs, and all o-rings. Figures
6-2 and 6-3 show the pneumatic speedsetting equipment.

When assemblinga governor with pneumatichead, position the floating lever

with the edge with the 45-degree angle down ànd the hole on top. The
positioning of the floating lever is the opposite from other types of PSG
govemors.

Speed Adjusting Motors
An electric speed adjusting motor, mounted on the psG cover, is used for
remote adjusftnent of the governor speed setting. There are two types of
motors availóle.

The Pittman motor is of the permanent magnet type, L2 or ?A vdc. when

supply voltage is other thar. Lzl24 vdc, the following woodward control

The PM or Bodine motor is coupledto the governor speed-settingmechanism
through a friction clutch, If the operatorruns the speedadjustmenrto its limit,
the clutch is set to slip, protectingthe speed-adjustingmotor.

connect the eiectric speed setting as shown in the accompanyingdiagrams.

voltage for the Bodine motor is shown on the motor. The pittman motor
operateson dc power.

If the cover and PM motor are ordered separately for use on an existing
governor, all that is required for the installationof the new sover is to remove
the old cover before settingthe new assemblyin place on the governor. some
adjustmentfor mountingmay be necessary. Loosen the screwJ holding the pM
motor in place and align the motor shaft with the clutch. Tighten the screws.

when the cover is used without the pM motor, a screw is placed in the hole
where the motor drive shaft normally fits. This screw is then used as a
low-speedstop. The cover also housesa verticar return spring, when one is
used.

Speed Adjustment
Rotating the speed-adjustinglever and shaft, using a speed-adjustingmotor,
changesthe governor speedsetting. see the schematicdiagram for reference.

one end of the floating lever attachesto the speed-adjustmentlever. The other
end of the lever pivots aboutthe speeddrooppivot pin. The spring-fork/speed-
springassemblyconnectsto the floating lever. Rotatingthe speed-adjustinglever
changesthe compressionof the speederspring. This changésthe speedthat the
governor must run to develop the flyweight force necessaryto balancethe spring
force.

lyrning the speed-adjustingscrew, either manuafly by turning the knurled

friction clutch or electricallyby meansof the speedadjustingmotór, repositions
the speed-adjusting lever. Maximum speedsetting is establishedby setting the
high-speedstop screwto limit travel of the speed-adjustinglever.

WoodwardGovernorCompany
71
For ac generatingunits tied in with other unirs, sertlie droop sufficiently high to
prevent interchangeof load betweenunits. If one unit in the systemhas enough
capacity, set its governor to zero droop and it will regulate the frequency of the
entire system. This unit can then take all load changeswithin the limits of its
capacityand will control frequencyif its capacityis not exceeded.

The speeddroop bracket is positioned by means of the speed-droopbracket

screw, lever, and two screwson the outsideof the governor case. Two values
of droop can be establishedand a rapid changemade between them. A stop
screwin the end ofthe cover is factory set to establishthe zero droop settinganà
requires no adjustment. If the percent of droop has not been specified at Íre time
of manufacture, the maximum droop position should be set with the screw at t}le

The speed-drooplever is mountedon the droop shaft, supportedby the govemor
case. The inner end of the shaft is joined to one end of tn" aroop linkáge with
a roll pin. The other end of the linkage carries a pivot pin that ii supportedby
the terminal lever. This pin can be adjustedfrom a posità., on the terminal shaft
centerline to a location with a radius of about 15 mm (about r/2 nch). when
the pin is at the shaft center, rotation producesno vertical movementof the pin
and likewise no movementof the speeddrooplever. As the pin is moved away
from the shaft center, rotation producesmovementof the end-ofthe speed-droop
lever, wiich is pivoted on the speed-drooppin. when the speeddroop tevei
moves, it producesa speedsetting which is a fi.inctionof terminal shaft p-osition
with speedsetting decreasingas fuel flow increases. This is speeddroop.

speed droop is increasedby moving the external lever forward, and is reduced
to zero when the lever is movedback, bringing the pivot pin to the shaft center.
Since there is no calibration for the droop adjusEnent, the zero droop position
may be set only by trial and error on the engine,or by the use of a dial indicator
on the speed{roop lever during manualrotation of the terminal shaft. If speed
droop is not previously set, it must be setby operationonthe engine, readjuiting
the screwon the side of the governorto obtain the desiredspeedchangebetween
full load and no load.

Disassembly
It is not necessaryto disassemblethe externalparts of the speeddroop. If it is
disassembled, mark the position of the droop bracket ón the case before
disassembly.Beforeremovingthe sub cap, refer to the sectionaboutthe internal
return spring. when the sub cap is removed, remove the speeddroop link.
Pivot the terminal lever upward until slider blocks can move thè droop pin from
the slot in the floating lever. Notice that there are washerson both sidesof the
floating lever which could drop into the governor.

Perform the rest of the disassemblysimilar to the basic governor.

Assembly
A spaceris used on the screw which attachesthe droop link assemblyto the
speeddroop shaft. when the adjustablespeeddroop is assembledto the left-
handside ofthe governor, this spaceris locatedon the nut side ofthe droop link
assembly,to strike the zerodroop-settingscrew in the sub cap. when adjustable
speeddroop is assembledon the right side of the govemor, the lever on the
speeddroop setting shaft strikes the zerodroop-settingscre\rr,and the location
of the spacerbecomesunimportant.

WoodwardGovernorCompany 73
lnternalReturn Springs
There are two types of internal return springs. one is mountedhorizontally in
the sub cap, and one is mounted in a vertical position (in line with the porver
piston and going into the cover).

WARNING

When rrcnoving the cover from a govemor equipped with a

vertical ret'r:n spring, be careful of the spring compression.
serious personaliniury is possibleif the spring compressionis
not controlled when the screws6slíting the cover are removed.

when disassemblinga sub cap with a horizontal return spring, us a snrall

screwdriverto pry the wing on the terminal lever away from the sub cap
housing. Placea 25 mm (1 inch)squareof 3 mm (r/8 inch)thick metalon toi

TemperatureCompensatedNeedleValve
The optional temperature compensatedneedle valve uses bi-metal washers and
a spring-loadedneedlevalve to automaticallyadjust the needlevalve sectingas
a function of temperarure, which is related to oil uir"o.ity (parts 260 to 267).
Adjust the valve the sameas a standardvalve.

CAUTION

Do not closethe needlevalve to more than a maximumof 0.6g

A friction coupling is incorporatedin these.ou., .ss"*Ëlies to permit overtravel of the motor without
damageto either the motor or t}te governor. This coupling should be adjusted to slip at 0.5 to 0.6
