Australian batter David Warner announces retirement from One Day International cricket

 Australian batter David Warner has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs).
 The 2-time ODI World Cup Winner had previously announced that he would be ending his Test
career after Australia's upcoming Test against Pakistan in Sydney.
 However, the opener has said that he will keep himself available for selection in the Champions
Trophy in 2025.
 Warner is Australia's sixth-highest run scorer in the ODI format and is only second to former
captain Ricky Ponting's tally for most Centuries for Australia in ODIs.
In Men's Chess, Dommaraju Gukesh secures spot at a prestigious Candidates tournament

 In Men's Chess, Dommaraju Gukesh has secured his spot at the prestigious Candidates
tournament, which will take place in Toronto from April 2 to 25, 2024.
 Gukesh became the third Indian to make the Candidates tournament, joining R Praggnanandhaa
and Vidit Gujrathi.
 This is the first time in history that three Indians are playing the Candidates.
 The winner gets the chance to take on China’s Ding Liren in the next World Chess Championship.
 In Women's Candidates, Koneru Humpy and Rameshbabu Vaishali will represent the country.

 Beach Games was inaugurated by Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur at Ghoghla Beach
in the Diu.
 The beach games, which started on January 4, will be played till January 11.
 Due to this festival, beach games will also be promoted in other beach states and union territories
of the country.
 Organizing this festival will establish new dimensions and will also promote culture and tourism in
the Union Territory.

 Nonetheless, the competition will feature Freestyle wrestlers Vicky and Sumit competing in the

Pistol event at the Asian Shooting Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.

 Also, this is the sixth Paris quota in the pistol events for India and the second in women's 25m
Pistol.

● India Chess Wizard Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa defeated World Chess Champion Ding
Liren in the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee, in the Netherlands.
● As a result of this victory, Praggnanandhaa became only the second Indian after
Vishwanathan Anand to defeat a reigning champion.
● He also overtook Anand to become India’s new number one Chess player in terms of live
ratings.

ICC lifts suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket after two-months


 The International Cricket Council (ICC) has lifted the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket with immediate
effect.
 Sri Lanka Cricket has been reinstated as a member of the International Cricket Council after a two-
month suspension.
 Sri Lanka Cricket was suspended for violation of responsibilities as an ICC Member, in particular, the
requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference
in the governance, regulation, and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
Divyansh Singh Panwar from India clinches gold medal in men's air rifle event at the ISSF World Cup
held in Cairo
 In air rifle shooting, Indian Olympian Divyasnsh Singh Panwar had struck gold in the men's event
with a world record score in the final while Sonam Uttam Maskar, competing in her first International
Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup, bagged silver in the women's 10-metre event in Cairo.
 The 21-year-old shot 253.7 bettering Chinese Sheng Lihao's 253.3, set at the Asian Games in
Hangzhou last year.
 India is now firmly on the top of the table in the season-opening World Cup stage with two gold and
three silver medals in their kitty after three days of competition.
 This was Divyansh's fifth overall World Cup stage gold and second individual gold after his last effort
came in Putian in 2019.
Rohan Bopanna has become the World No. 1 Doubles Player after his Australian Open Victory
 Indian Tennis star Rohan Bopanna for the first time climbed to World Number One position in the
latest ATP Doubles Rankings released.
 Rohan Bopanna won his career’s first Men’s Doubles Grand Slam at the Australian Open to jump
two places in the ATP Rankings.
 Bopanna’s Australian partner Matthew Ebden is the new World Number Two.
 43-year old Bopanna is the oldest World Number One in Men’s Tennis.
 He is also the fourth Indian tennis player after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza to
reach the top of the tennis rankings.
 All four are also the only Indian Grand Slam winners.

Rohan Bopanna, the oldest Grand Slam winner clinched the Australia Open 2024:

 India's tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden clinched the grand
slam title at the Australian Open 2024 after the duo defeated Italy's Simone Bolelli, and Andrea
Vavassori in the men's doubles final at Melbourne Park.
 The 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna, who recently became World No. 1 in the ATP men's doubles
rankings is now the oldest grand slam winner.
 The victory in the Australian Open marks the initial significant triumph for the duo, who
experienced defeat in the US Open final last year.
 Following the rankings update, Rohan Bopanna will ascend to the world number one spot, while
Matthew Ebden, despite participating in three additional tournaments within the ranking period,
will hold the number two position.

interest in tennis.

Aryna Sabalenka crushes Zheng Qinwen to defend Australian Open title
 Aryna Sabalenka crushes Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2 to defend Australian Open title.
 She became the first woman to do so in more than a decade.
 The 25-year-old Belarusian defending champion and world number two Aryna Sabalenka
defeated Chinese 12th seed Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2 to win the Australian Open women's singles
title in Melbourne.
 Sabalenka took just 33 minutes to race through a 6-3 win in the first set at Melbourne Park.
 This is Sabalenka's second Grand Slam title while Zheng was gunning for a first.
 Sabalenka became the first woman to defend the Australian Open title since 2013.

Virat Kohli wins ICC ODI Player of the Year award for 4th time
 Indian batting star Virat Kohli bagged the ICC ODI Player of the Year award for the fourth time,
following his record-breaking performance in the World Cup 2023.
 Kohli had previously won the award in 2012, 2017, and 2018 and also stands amongst the four
nominees for the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2023 award.
 Notably, Kohli has become the first-ever cricketer to clinch this award four times, surpassing AB de
Villiers' tally of three awards.
 Virat Kohli built on his comeback in 2022 with a spectacular 2023, where he won the Player of the
Tournament performance at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Kohli has opted to withdraw from the first two Tests against England, citing personal reasons

 The 34-year-old Indian marathon runner comfortably beat runner-up Huang Yongzheng of China with
a time difference of 65 seconds in the men’s event.
