Humpy Koneru (32), an Indian chess grandmaster from Andhra Pradesh, has settled 12th overall in the
2-day FIDE World Blitz competition 2019 held at at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia. Kateryna
Lagno (13 points) of Russia and Magnus Carlsen of Norway (16.5 points) retained their titles in the
Women's and Men’s Blitz Championships respectively. Another Indian Harika Dronavalli finished 25th
position.
For the first time Lawn bowls & Cycling to be included in 3rd Khelo India Games 2020 to be held in
Guwahati, Assam
Chief Executive Officer of “Khelo India Games” has announced the inclusion of “Lawn bowls” and
“Cycling” in the 3rd edition of Khelo India Games. These two games will be included in the event for the
first time. Around 6500 athletes from 37 teams will take part in the 3rd edition of Khelo India youth
games in Guwahati, Assam which is scheduled to be held from 10th of January to 22nd of February at
Indira Gandhi Stadium.
India’s Manav Thakkar, Uttar Pradesh jumped 9 spots to No.1 in U-21 table tennis category
Manav Thakar (19), an Indian table tennis player from Uttar Pradesh jumped nine places and become
the world's No.1 player U-21 (Under-21) Men’s single category rankings released by the IITF
(International Table Tennis Federation). Thakar won the U-21 men’s singles title at the ITTF Challenge
Plus Benemax-Virgo North American Open in Markham, Canada by defeating Argentina’s player Martin
Bentancor, in December 2019.

Indian Sports Ministry gave ‘in principle’ approval to hold shooting and archery in 2022 CWG
The Sports Ministry has given ‘in principle’ approval to hold the Commonwealth Games shooting and
archery events in India. These events will be held under the aegis of the Commonwealth Games (CWG)
Friendship Program in March 2022.Last year CWG has decided to exclude shooting event in 2022 CWG
to be held in Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK) but the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was against
the decision.
India's Magesh Chandran wins 95th Hastings International Chess title in Hastings, England
A 36 years old, India’s grandmaster (GM) Magesh Chandran Panchanathan from Madurai, Tamil Nadu
wins the title in the 95th edition of the prestigious Hastings International Chess Congress at Hastings in
England. He stands with a FIDE (International Chess Federation) rating of 2479 finished first place with
7.5 points from nine games. Magesh Chandran became the GrandMaster in 2006.

Double Asian Games medallist equestrian, Fouaad Mirza (27 years) became the 1st Indian rider to
compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan after 2 decades. His qualification to the
Olympics was confirmed by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI). Prior to Fouaad,
Imtiaz Anees participated in the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000 and Late Wing Commander IJ Lamba

Jacqueline Williams of Jamaica becomes the first woman third umpire in men’s international cricket
match. The 43-year-old Jamaican woman oversaw all 3 matches of the Twenty20 International

The Indian wrestling team has clinched 7 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, and a bronze) in the 1st UWW
(United World Wrestling) Matteo Pellicone Rome Ranking Series 2020 held from January 15 – 18, 2020
in the Italian Capital, Rome. The 4-day tournament, organized by UWW, has featured all the 3
disciplines – freestyle, Greco Roman and women’s wrestling. The 2020 ranking series consists of two

Indian Tennis Player Sania Mirza and her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok have won the 2020
women’s doubles title of the 27th WTA (World Tennis Association) Hobart International Trophy held in
Hobart, Australia by defeating Shauli Peng and Shaui Zhang of China with 6-4, 6-4. Sania and Nadiia
received a cash award of $13580 as prize money. Elena Andreyevna Rybakina, a Kazakh-Russian tennis

The 3rd edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2020 was held at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi

cities namely Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin and Christchurch of New Zealand will
host matches of the 2021 edition of the Women's cricket World Cup. The final of this tournament will be
played at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. A total of 31 matches will be played between the 8 teams

According to the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), which is responsible for investigating match fixing in
tennis, Joao Olavo Soares de Souza (31), a former Brazilian professional tennis player has been banned
for life due to match fixing and corruption. It also fined Souza with $200,000. As per the investigation of
TIU, he did match fixing in tennis at the ATP(Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger and ITF
(International Tennis Federation ) Futures tournaments in Brazil, Mexico, the United States(US) and
Czech Republic between 2015 and 2019.
Bala Devi: 1st Indian woman to sign up for foreign football club, 'Rangers FC' of Scotland
Ngangom Bala Devi, 29 years old from Manipur, has become the first Indian woman footballer to get a
professional contract from Scotland's Women Premier League club Rangers (Football Club) for 18-
months and to play for jersey No.10 after a successful trial in November, 2019. The formal
announcement was made by Rangers FC and Bengaluru FC at Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru,
Karnataka. She is the Ranger’s first-ever Asian footballer and current top-scorer for India.
Canada’s Christine Sinclair becomes all-time top scorer with 185 goals in international soccer
Christine Margaret Sinclair, 36 years old, Canadian soccer player, became the all-time top scorer with
185 goals in international soccer. Sinclair surpassed the record of American Abby Wambach (original
name Mary Abigail Wambach) who scored 184 goals. She scored her 185th goal against St. Kitts & Nevis
national football team. She achieved this feat during 5th CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying

NADA suspends Weightlifter Ramshad AR for 2 year & Wrestler Ravinder Kumar for 4 years
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) banned Indian weightlifter Ramshad AR for a period of 2

Bangladesh won the 13th ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2020 defeating India in South Africa
13th edition of 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, an international limited-overs cricket
tournament was held in South Africa from 17 January – 9 February 2020. It was administered by
International Cricket Council (ICC). The Finals were held at the JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom, South
Africa between Bangladesh & India. Bangladesh’s youth team defeated India by three wickets in a
thrilling match in the final. With this, the Bangladesh team won the under-19 World Cup title for the
first time.

Australia clinches ICC women’s championship trophy 2020 for the 2nd time
Australia were awarded the ICC (International Cricket Council) Women’s Championship trophy
2020, which they maintained by winning victories in the eight-team one-day championship between
2017 and 2020. The Australia’s team was led by Meghann Moira Lanning (also known as Meg Lanning).
With this, Australia makes it to the Women’s Cricket World Cup to be held in New Zealand 2021.
ITF women’s tennis event 2020 in Thailand: India’s Ankita Raina wins 18th career doubles title
Ankita Ravinderkrishan Raina (27), an Indian professional tennis player along with her

Inaugural National winter games 2020 to be held in Ladakh and J&K’s Gulmarg

Indian men’s team clinched bronze medal at the Badminton Asia team championships 2020 after
losing to two-time defending champions Indonesia with 2-3 scores in semi-finals of the tournament
held at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, Philippines from 11 – 16 February 2020. This is the

Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has won the Cairns Cup Chess tournament held at St.Louis, US (United
States). She won the title after finishing 6 points off 9 rounds and a cash prize of $45,000. This was the
second edition of the Cairns Cup.With this win, she has ranked 2nd in the recently released chess world
ranking. Reigning world champion Ju Wenjun finished with 5.5 points secured 2nd place while Russia’s
Alexandra Kosteniuk came 3rd who finished with 5 points.
India to host 16-team FIH Junior Men’s World Cup 2021, South Africa to host women’s edition
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced that India will host Junior Men’s Hockey
World Cup 2021 and the women’s Junior Hockey World Cup would be held for the first time in
Potchefstroom, South Africa. This is the third time that India will be hosting the prestigious tournament,
having staged in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP) in 2016 & New Delhi, India in 2013. India had also hosted

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the 5 host cities of India for the FIFA (Federation
Internationale de Football Association) Under-17 Women’s Football World Cup which begins on 2nd
November 2020. The official slogan of the tournament is “Kick Off the Dream”. The host cities are
Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Bhubaneshwar (Odisha), Guwahati (Assam), Kolkata (West Bengal) and Navi

The 13-year old Young Indian Grandmaster (Youngest GM of India) Dommaraju Gukesh emerged as
champion in the 34th Cannes Open 2020 chess tournament held at Cannes, France by beating
Harutyun Bargeshyan from France in the Final round and secured a total of 7.5 points. Tamil Nadu
based Gukesh became the world’s second youngest Grandmaster in 2019. Other Indian players Siva
Mahadevan and G B Harshavardhan hold 10th place and 18th place respectively in the Cannes Open

CGF approved India to host 2022 Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships in Chandigarh
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has approved the proposal from Commonwealth Games
India (CGI) to host the 2022 Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships in Chandigarh,
India to be held in January 2022, while the Birmingham Commonwealth Games is scheduled from July
27 to August 7, 2022. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) will largely bear the cost for
shooting championship and the archery event would be funded solely by the Government of India.
ICC bans Oman player Yousuf Abdulrahim Al Balushi from cricket for 7 years
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Oman player Yousuf Abdulrahim Al
Balushi from all forms of cricket for 7 years, because he tried to fix a match and he accepted 4 charges
of breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. Al Balushi breached Article 2.1.1 of the Anticorruption code
(being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive in any way the result, progress, conduct or any
other aspect of matches). The charges are all related to the ICC men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers 2019,
held in UAE (United Arab Emirates).

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer announces retirement from all forms of cricket on March 7,2020
Wasim Jaffer (42) a former Indian opening batsman and a domestic cricket giant has announced his
retirement from all forms of cricket. He hails from Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is the fifth-highest run-
scorer in Indian first-class cricket with 10 Ranji trophy titles. Wasim Jaffer is the highest run-scorer in
the Ranji and Irani Trophy, who became the first player to play 150 Ranji trophy matches and the first
batsman to score more than 12,000 runs in Ranji Trophy with 40 centuries and 89 half-centuries.

The Saurashtra team led by Jaydev Unadkat won the Ranji Trophy title 2019-20 by defeating Bengal

World Athletics fines Russia of USD 10 million & caps neutral athlete at 10
The World Athletics Council fines the Russian Athletics Federation (RusAF) of USD 10 million for
violating the anti-doping rules & capped at 10 the number of Authorised Neutral Athletes (ANA) who
were allowed to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, other specified World Athletics &European
Athletics senior events. ANA process to be suspended if USD 5 million of the USD 10 million fine is not

Indian middle-distance runner Jhuma Khatun was banned for four years for using banned substances
(Steroids) by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of the World governing body for the doping case from

India lost hosting rights of 2021 Men’s World Boxing Championships to Serbia: AIBA
International Boxing Association (AIBA) terminated an agreement with India, signed in 2017, which
resulted in losing of hosting rights of 2021 men’s world boxing championship by the latter to Serbia. The
reason behind termination is the inability of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) to pay the host fees of USD
4 million due on December 2, 2019. Now, India would have to pay a cancellation penalty of USD 500.
