TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
ACADEMIC OVERVIEW
COURSE OBJECTIVES
FAWAKIH TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
At Fawakih, the goal of our teaching is to give our students the best learning experience we can to help them
access and build a relationship with the Quran.
In order to help the participants benefit, it is important that both teachers and students strive to maintain
etiquette appropriate for sacred learning.
2
ACADEMIC OVERVIEW
Quranic Arabic Curriculum
Over the years, Fawakih has developed a curriculum for students to embark on their Quranic Arabic
Journey. Through theory classes (Linguistics: Morphology, Grammar, Rhetoric), text analysis classes
(Introductory Reading, Quran Analysis, Islamic Texts), and skills classes (Listening, Speaking, Writing), the
program facilitates language acquisition through both active and passive engagement.
See the Quranic Arabic Curriculum Road Map, provided after the academic overview section, for a birds-eye
look at Fawakih’s 6-level curriculum.
Placement
All students are required to take the online beginner and intermediate placement exams after registration.
Please make sure to take these exams as soon as possible. The Fawakih administration will then place
students in appropriate levels based on placement exam results, academic background and any other relevant
factors.
Course Requirements
Homework/Participation (30%) Attendance will be checked. Ample preparation and active involvement in
classroom activities is expected at all times. Any anticipated absences must be cleared with your instructor.
Homework will be visually checked and assessed on the basis of effort. In order to save class time, homework
will be self-checked as answer keys will be posted for students online. Students can email or utilize office
hours (if available) to have homework questions answered.
Quizzes (30%) Quizzes are integral part by which a student can track their progress. Required quizzes will be
listed on the class schedule and students are expected to take them on time. These quizzes are meant to
stimulate your neurotransmitters to inspire movement within your synaptic vesicles in a concerted effort to
shift the neurons from your short-term memory to your long-term memory.
Final Exam (40%) Final exams covering all three subjects will be administered at the end of the semester.
Student Absences
Students are allowed three excused absences each semester. An excused absence is one in which the student
notifies the instructor of the absence in advance and has a legitimate reason (excused absences include:
emergencies, being ill, and planned absences).
If a student would like to get a class recorded, he or she can arrange for one with another student with the
permission of the instructor. Fawakih staff and instructors are not responsible for recording classes for absent
students.
After 2 consecutive unexcused absences, the teacher emails him/her. After the 3rd the administration will
email them informing them that he/she is withdrawn and will receive partial credit for what remains of the
tuition from that point on.
3
Participation Grades
Instructors should enter participation grades on a weekly basis so that both staff and students (who are given
access to Engrade) are up-to-date on student progress. Instructors should finalize their grades by the time final
exams are due so that the Testing Manager can prepare transcripts.
Promotion Policy
1. Students must receive a grade of C (74%) or higher in order to be promoted to the next level (i.e. from
Level 3 to Level 4; not from Level 3A to 3B).
2. Students may, at the discretion of Fawakih administration, be allowed to re-take a final exam in a
different version in the following situations:
1. The student faces a technical issue while taking it the first time
2. If a student fails a final exam
3. Students may repeat classes if deemed necessary, upon consultation with instructors and Fawakih
staff.
Students who are missing too many assignments OR have not performed well enough to pass the class will
receive an “I” grade and instructions from the Testing Manager (with the instructor CC’d) on what they can do
to improve it (e.g. take missing quizzes or re-take quizzes with low scores). These students can continue to the
second half of their level (e.g. take Level 1B after getting an incomplete in Level 1A) but cannot proceed to the
next level (e.g. from 1B to 2A) without bringing up their grade to a 74 average for the level (e.g. Level 1A and
1B combined).
Online Resources
You will be given access to our online Student Resource Portal, which can be found at www.fawakih.com.
Resources include access to online quizzes, recordings, listening clips, instructor power points, study guides,
answers keys and more. Students will be given login information during orientation.
Online Quizzes
Students are required to take all online quizzes that are assigned to them. Due dates are indicated on the
course schedule (any changes will be communicated by the instructor or administration) and students can
access the quizzes through the resources section of the Fawakih website.
4
Testing Policies
• Quizzes are closed book except for reading quizzes
• All final exams are closed book
Checking Grades
Students can track their grades via Engrade, an online gradebook system. Students will be given information
on how to log into Engrade to track their academic progress.
