Before proceeding to our discussion,

let’s have a quick recall about the topic
we discussed yesterday.

Does anyone wants to tell the class

what we discussed?
(Learners will raise their hand.)
Jazper.
We discussed about verbs sir.
Very good. Verbs are words that shows
action or in short verbs are action
words.

Examples are drawing, writing,

sleeping, eating, running, walking and
many more.

Helen can you give me an example of

an action word?
Reading sir.
Excellent!

Another example Ashley.

Listening sir.
Very good Ashley.

Are we clear about action words or

verbs?
Yes sir.
Do you questions?
None sir.

C. Motivation

Okay good, before we move onto our

discussion, do you want to hear a
story?
Yes sir.
The story is titled The Ant and the
Grasshopper, have you heard of this
story before?
No sir.
Before I start reading the story. You
should stay silent, and listen carefully,
okay?
Okay sir.
(Teacher will read the story.)

In a field one summer's day a

Grasshopper was hopping about,
chirping and singing to its heart's
content. An Ant passed by, bearing
along with great toil an ear of corn he
was taking to the nest.

"Why not come and chat with me,"

said the Grasshopper, "instead of
toiling and moiling in that way?"

"I am helping to lay up food for the

winter," said the Ant, "and
recommend you to do the same."

"Why bother about winter?" said the

Grasshopper; "We have got plenty of
food at present." But the Ant went on
its way and continued its toil.

When the winter came the

Grasshopper had no food and found
itself dying of hunger - while it saw the
ants distributing every day corn and
grain from the stores they had
collected in the summer. Then the
Grasshopper knew: It is best to
prepare for days of need.
(The learners will listen to the story.)

Did you enjoy listening to the story?

Yes sir.
Very good.

D. Presentation
The story that I have just read has a
connection to the topic that we’re
going to discuss today.
Do you have any idea what is it?
None sir.
What we’re going to discuss today is all
about the elements of a short story.
Okay sir.
E. Discussion

There are four elements of a story

class. These are the characters,
settings, plot and theme

Robeeshane, can you please read the

definition of character.
The character tells who are the
persons or animals in the story.
Very good.

Characters are those who play a role in

the story, they can be a protagonist or
an antagonist.

Dionne, can you read what is plot.

Plot is a sequence of events within a
story.
Great.

Plot is what happens in the story, it

includes the major events taken in the
story.

Danielle, what is a setting?

Setting tells where the story happened
sir.
Excellent.

Setting is the time and place of the

story’s event.

And for the last element is the theme.

Ian, can you tell us what is theme?

Theme is the main point of the story.
Very good.

Theme is the main idea presented in

the events of the story.
Did you understood the elements of a
story?
Yes sir.
So from the story The ant and the
grasshopper, can you tell me who are
the characters in the story?
(Learners will raise their hand.)
Darren.
Ant and grasshopper sir.
Very good.

How about the setting of the story?

(Learners will raise their hand.)
Lance.
In a field one summer’s day sir.
Very good.

How about the plot, or the events

happened in the story?
(Learners will raise their hand.)
Micaela.
The ant is storing food , while the
grasshopper is hopping, chirping and
singing. And when the winter came
the grasshopper does not have
anything to eat sir.
That was an excellent answer.

And for the last, what about the theme

or main idea presented in the story?
Plan for the future sir.
Very good, we need to plan for the
future in order for us to be ready for
the problems waiting ahead of us.

Did you understand our discussion?

Yes sir.
Do you have questions?
None sir.
