Homework 5
1. Submit a one paragraph (or no more than two) abstract describing your microfluidics project via
email to Dr. Thom and Dr. Morris. Dr. Thom will post the abstract on the Other Stuff section of
the webpage where other students can read it. Read the other students' abstracts and formulate at
least one question for them. Submit the question(s) by clicking the "Send Question" email link in
the Other Stuff section where the abstracts are posted.
2. Show that for a closed system, the macroscopic conservation of linear momentum equation
reduces to F = ma.
For the circular micro-jet of water (ρ = 998 kg/m3) impinging the circular plate shown in the
figure, find
a. the velocity of the water leaving the outer edge (circumference) of the plate, and
b. the force P required to keep the plate stationary.

D = 1 mm
h = 50 μm
d = 100 μm
4. Consider flow between two parallel plates separated by a distance of a as shown in the figure.
Both the top and bottom plates move to the right with constant velocity U0. The flow is steady,
laminar, and one-dimensional flow with no applied pressure gradient. Use the continuity and
Navier-Stokes equations to find the velocity distribution as a function of the coordinate y.

5. Consider a flow channel consisting of two infinite, stationary plates separated by a distance of a
as shown in the figure. A constant pressure gradient of K = -dP/dx is applied in the flow direction.
(It is convenient to use the negative sign in the definition of K since a negative pressure gradient
will produce flow in the positive x direction.) For fully developed, steady, one-dimensional
laminar flow, show that the resulting velocity distribution is parabolic and is given by
