On a small island in the Irish Sea, fortresses preside over the
rugged shores. This unlikely location was the birthplace of a
medieval empire that lasted 200 years. Rulers built coastal
fortresses on cliffs, roved the seaways, and threw themselves
into epic battles to consolidate control over an impressive
maritime kingdom. Andrew McDonald uncovers this forgotten
dynasty of sea kings.

Present simple forms: all verbs except ‘be’


With all verbs that are not ‘be’, we make the present simple in the same way.

The positive form is really easy. It’s just the verb (sometimes called the
infinitive, or the bare infinitive or the infinitive without ‘to’), and we add
an extra ‘s’ if the subject is ‘he’, ‘she’, or ‘it’.

I play tennis.

• You live in London.

• He likes chocolate.

• She hates mushrooms.

• It rains often.

• We travel a lot.

• They want a drink.


Don’t forget the ‘s’! Even really advanced students do this.
To make the negative form, you need to use ‘do not’ or ‘does not’ + the infinitive.
We use ‘do’ + I / you / we / they and ‘does’ + he / she / it. The ‘s’ for he / she / it is
now on ‘does’ so we don’t need it on the main verb.
I do not play tennis.

• It does not rain often.
• We do not travel a lot. • They do not want a drink.

We use ‘do’ or ‘does’ before the subject to make ‘yes / no’ questions.

To make a ‘wh’ question, you just put the question word at the front When do I
play tennis?

Alex routine
Alex is an American boy. He lives in Los Angeles, California. He lives with his
family in a modern house. He is twelve years old, and he has got an older
brother, David, and a younger sister, Emma. He starts his day at about half
past seven. He gets up, goes to the bathroom, takes a shower, brushes his
teeth and gets dressed. Then he has breakfast.

He usually has cereal, milk and some fruit. At a quarter to eight he leaves home
and catches the bus to go to school.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE STORY?

A father asks the king to meet his daughter, so to impress the king and the father tells him that he
can spin gold, so the king agrees to meet the daughter. When they arrived at the castle the king
asked the daughter to show her talent if she loved her life, but said talent was false so a small and
old man appeared to help the girl.
Two times happened in which the man helped the girl in exchange for something, last time the
king said that she would become queen if she did it a third time. Then the man asked him for
his first son in exchange. Since she had no other option, the princess accepted. Years passed
and when her first child was born the man visited the queen, so she begged him not to take her
son but the man gave him three days to guess her name otherwise he would take her, her son.
The first two days he did not guess, but on the third he asked someone to spy on the man, so
he guessed the old man's name and he left enraged, being able to live happily.

Dear Mr Landers,

I run `Snips' hairdressing shop above Mr Shah's


chemist's shop at 24 High Street. I started the
business 20 years ago and it is now very successful.
My customers have to walk through the chemist's to
the stairs at the back which lead to the
hairdresser's. This has never been a problem.

Mr Shah plans to retire later this year, and I have


heard from a business acquaintance that you intend to
rent the shop space to a hamburger bar. I have
thought about trying to rent it myself and make my

My working day starts very early. From Monday to Friday I get up


at half past three and I have a shower and a cup of coffee. I
usually leave the house at ten past four because the car always
arrives a few minutes early. I get to the studio at about five
o'clock and start work. My programme Good Morning

Britain starts at seven o'clock and finishes at nine o'clock. Then I


leave the studio at a quarter past ten. After that, I go shopping
and visit some friends. I get home at three o'clock. A woman
helps me with the housework and the ironing. I read a
newspaper and do some work.

Then my husband gets home at half past five in the evening and I
cook dinner. We stay at home in the evening. We don't go out
because I go to bed very early. We usually watch television and
then I go to bed at half past eight, I'm usually asleep by nine
o'clock.
At weekends, I don't get up until ten o'clock. In the evening, we
often see some friends or go to the cinema. But I'm always up
early again on Monday morning.
