18 A. Head region – it consists nucleus which fuses with the ovum’s nucleus, and 1+1
it have cap like structure that is known as acrosome filled hydrolytic
enzymes which help to penetrate sperm to ovum by dissolving zona
pellucida layer.
B. Middle piece : it contains spiral arrangement of mitochondria which
provide energy during sperm motility so that sperm can reach to the site of
fertilisation.

be subjected for clinical trial, quality assurance and quality control.
21 (a) ‘X,- post reproductive population 1+1
‘Y’- reproductive population
‘Z’ – pre-reproductive population
(b) A – Expanding
B – stable
C – Declining
Or
(a) Two producers – 1,2, 3 and two carnivores – 6, 8, 7
(b) No, the ecological pyramid is only applicable in case of simple food chains.
Neither does the ecological pyramid explains the concept of a food web
because there are multiple trophic level in food web.
SECTION C
22 (a) Ovarian event from 13-15 days- rapid secretion of LH to LH surge which 1+1+1
induces the rupture of graffian follicle and the ovulation takes place.
(b) Ovarian hormones level from 16 to 23 days- after ovulation reminiscent of
graffian follicle transforms in to corpus luteum which starts to secretes large
amount of progesterone hormone .
(c) Uterine events from 24 to 29 days- in the absence of fertilisation corpus luteum
start to generates due to this progesterone level decreases resulting shedding off
the endometrium level along with blood vessels.
23 (a) ‘A’ Meiosis and ‘B’- Mitosis 1+1+1
(b) ‘C’- Parthenogenesis- ovum develops into an individual without fertilisation.
(c) Haplo-Diploid type of sex determination
24 (a) From the original seed-eating features many other forms with altered beaks 1+2
arose enabling them to become insectivores and vegetarian finches.
(b) He explained it as the process of evolution of different species in a given
geographical area starting from a point and literally radiating to other areas of
geography habitats called adaptive radiation.
25 (a) A- mechanical agitation 2+1
B- reduced BOD
C- activated sludge
D- anaerobic sludge digester
(b) In this process other kind of bacteria, which grow anaerobically, digest the
bacteria and the fungi in the sludge. During this digestion, bacteria produce
a mixture of gases such as methane, H2S, and CO2. These gases from
biogas and can be used as source of energy as it is inflammable.
26 a- statin ½X6

b- blood cholesterol lowering agent
c- Penicillium notatum
d- penicillin
e- Trichoderma polysporum
f- immunosuppressive agent
27 Presence of pathogen is normally suspected only when the pathogen produced a 3
disease symptom. By this time the concentration of pathogen is already very high
in the body. However, very low concentration of a pathogen of the disease can be
detected by various DNA technologies i.e. PCR, Autoradiography and ELISA.
PCR- this technique can detect very low amount pathogenic DNA by amplifying
it.
Autoradiography – when radioactive probe tagged DNA or RNA can easily detect
muted gene because mutated gene will not appear on photographic film.
ELISA- this technique is based on the principle of antigen-antibody interation.
Or
(a) convention for naming EcoRI-
 The first letter of the name comes from the genus- Escherichia - E
 The second two letters comes from the species of the prokaryotic 1+1+1
cellfrom which they isolated - coli - co.
 Next letter derived from the name of strain – RY13- R
 Roman numbers following the name indicate the order in which the
enzyme were isolated - I
(b) recognition site –
5’ GAATTC 3’
3’ CTTAAG 5’
(c) cleavage sites- between G and A on both strands of the double helix.
28 a. It is the methods of conserving all the living species, especially the wild and 1½+ 1
endangered species in their natural habitats and environment. ½
b. When we conserve and protect the whole ecosystem, its biodiversity at all
level is protected. We save the entire forest to save the tiger. So by conserving
tiger we conserve all the entire biodiversity of the forest.
SECTION D
Q.no 29 and 30 are case based questions. Each question has subparts with internal choice in one
subpart.
29 (a) Farm land II (1+1+2)
It shows better management practices and use of agro chemicals. If I had to
cultivate, I should personally prefer Bt crop, because the use of pesticides
is highly reduced for Bt crops.
(b) In Bt cotton a cry ;gene has been introduced from bacterium Bacillus
thuringiensis (Bt) which causes synthesis of a toxic protein. This protein
becomes active in the alkaline gut of the bollworm feeding on cotton, the
activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cell and create

pores that cause cell swelling and lysis and eventually death of the insect.
Or
(c) The Bt toxin protein exist as inactive protoxin form but once an insect
ingest the inactive toxin. It is converted into active form of toxin due to the
alkaline pH of the gut which solubilise the crystals of toxin protein. , the
activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cell and create
pores that cause cell swelling and lysis and eventually death of the insect.

30 1. A process in which organisms succeed to blend with nature and their (1+1+2)
surroundings is called camouflage.
2. an organism check the uncontrolled growth of another organism within the
biological ecosystem through predation, in this type of interaction predator
keep prey population under control.
3. For plants, herbivores are predators and unlike animals they cannot run
away from their predators. So plant like calotropis have evolved chemical
defence against herbivores by producing highly poisonous cardiac
glycosides in their latex as secondary metabolites that is why goats never
browsing on this plant.
Or
Gause’s competitive exclusion principle states that two closely related
species competing for the same resources cannot co-exist indefinitely and
competitively inferior one will be eliminated eventually
SECTION E
31 (a) 'Contact inhibition' - Normal cells have the feature of contact inhibition, 2+1+1+1
which prevents them from growing and dividing uncontrollably; however,
cancer cells lack this property, and they expand and divide uncontrollably,
resulting in tumour formation.

'Metastasis' - it is a complex process that involves the spread of a tumor or

cancer cells to distant parts of the body from its original site.
(b) Cellular oncogene (C-onc) or Proto-oncogenes are the group of gene that have
been identified in normal cells. These genes when activated under certain
conditions, could lead to oncogenic transformation of the cells.
(c) Two techniques that are useful in detecting cancers of internal organs are 1.
CT- Scan and 2. MRI
(d) Cancerpatients are given substance called biological response modifier such
as α-interferon which activates their immune system and helps in destroying
the tumor.
OR
1+3+1
(a) two species of Malaria pathogen- Plasmodium vivax / P. malaria, P.
falciparum

4|Page
(b) Draw the life cycle of Malaria parasite.

(c) major symptom of Malaria

Malaria- chill and high fever recurring every three to four
days
32 (a) Repressor protein binds with operator site. 1+1+2+1
(b) In the presence of the inducer such as lactose or allolactose, the repressor is
inactivated by interaction with the inducer.
(c) Lac z- Beta galactosidase
Lac - y– permease
Lac – a - transacetylase
(d) In lac operon, the inhibitor gene codes for an inhibitor protein which binds
upon the operator gene and restricts the transcription of structural genes.
Thus, lac operon is an example of negative regulation.

OR

(i)Punnet
Punnet square for all possibilities. Blood group AB has alleles as IA,
A, IB and O group

3. If sperm present in semen cannot fertilize ova in-vitro then a sperm is directly
injected into ovum by using microinjection.

OR
Many elements need to be considered by women, men, or couples at any given
point in their lifetimes when choosing the most appropriate contraceptive method. 1+2+2
These elements include safety, effectiveness, availability (including accessibility
and affordability), and acceptability.
1. A. it should be user-friendly and B. effective and no or less side effect.
2. Lactational Amenorrhea is absence of menstruation in period ovulation and
do not occur due to intense lactation phase. Therefor as long as mother
breast feeds the child dully chances of conception are almost nil.

The maximum effectiveness of this method is up to six months.

3. non-medicated IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus
while hormone releasing IUDs makes the uterus unsuitable for implantation
and the cervix hostile to the sperms.
