about her great-uncle, Joseph Giacinto, a World War II veteran, submitted a photograph of the hero and said, I think Veterans Day is important because those that served our country gave us freedom. According to Jessicas account, Giacinto stepped on a land mine and lost his leg. After his discharge, he went to work for the University of Michigan Hospital making arms and legs for people in need, Graber wrote. My Uncle Joe helped our world not just once, but twice, she said. Jessica Graber, an eighth-grade student in teacher Sharleen Stearns Growing Up in America class, took an assignment quite seriously. The students were asked, in preparation for the annual Veterans Day program to be held Nov. 11 at the Milan Middle School, to submit a photograph, write a short biography about a relative or friend who is a veteran or write a short essay as to why Veterans Day is important. Jessica did all three assignments. She wrote

Milan voters will be asked to approve a millage for the Milan Public Library Nov. 8. The seven-year, 0.25-mill levy would amount to 25 cents per $1,000 of the taxable value on all property in the city, starting in 2012. If passed, the millage would raise an estimated $47,387 per year. For example, a home with a taxable value of $100,000 would cost the owner $47 a year. The library, located at 151 Wabash St., serves the residents of Milan, Augusta Township and, by contract, portions of Pittsfield and York townships. Susan Wess, who has served as the director for four years, said Milan residents already pay the same amount resulting from a millage s passed in 2005 and is up for renewal in 2012. If passed, the new millage would take its place. Wess said the board wanted to put the decision before voters a year earlier to see if the millage would pass. We dont want to wait for the last minute to go out for renewal, she said. The library could have requested a 0.50 mill, but decided to stay with the current amount based on the slow recovery of the economy, she said. We know times are tight for everyone, Wess said. Funds from the millage would finance day-to-day operating expenses, and help purchase materials and supplies.

Herb Morelock, technology and social studies teacher at Milan High School and his family, along with others from Milan Area Schools, were in good company Oct. 9, when they joined more than 1,200 participants in the University of Michigan-sponsored Big House Big Run fundraiser aimed at supporting U of M medical programs and local non-profit organizations. There were two ways to raise funds for the nonprofits. U of M, through Champions for Charity, donated a portion of the entry fees to ALS research through the U of M Neurology Research and Discovery department, the Cardiovascular Center, C.S. Mott Childrens Hospital and the Womens Hospital. Participants were free to select a charity of their choice. All totaled, 127 charities were listed on the U of M website that were eligible for donations. Besides raising funds with the 5k or 10K run, participants, who ran through the U of M campus, enjoyed a fantastic finish with a run through the Big House tunnel and onto the field at the 50yard line. Runners could watch themselves on the Big House Big Screen. Morelock was joined on the run by his wife, Julie, a local medical doctor that volunteers at Hope
