Direction: Identify the technique of separating mixtures in the following
mixtures:
1. Salt from water 3. Gasoline and water
2. Oil from water 4. Pebbles and paper clips
3. Pebbles from rice grains
B. Establishing purpose

Ask: (Hots)
1. Can you distinguish the images projected on the screen?
2. Compare the uses of each instrument to the whole class.
3. How do you call the process or technique of separating mixtures using the
said instruments?
C. Presenting examples
/instances of the new Demonstration Time! (LOCALIZATION AND CONTEXTUALIZATION)
lessons (The teacher will do the demonstration while the learners observe what happen. After the
demonstration there are questions prepared for them to answer.)
Filtering
These are the materials that we need:
- Muddy water
- beaker
- Filter paper/cloth
- Funnel
Procedure:
First, insert the funnel in the mouth of the container then, put the filter paper/cloth
inside the funnel. Wet the filter paper/cloth with the small amount of water and
slowly pour the muddy mixture in the container. Finally, we now have filtered
water.
QUESTIONS:
1. What kind of mixture is the muddy water?
2. What are the different components of muddy water?
3. How did we separate the component of the mixture?
SIEVING
These are the materials that we need:
- sieve
- bowl
- mixture of flour and mongo seeds
Procedure:
First, put the sieve to the bowl. Then put the mixture of the flour and mongo to the
sieve and slowly shake it. Observe what’s inside the bowl.
Questions:
1. What type of mixture is flour and mongo seeds?
2. How did we separate the components of the mixture?
Did you find our activity interesting? Why? Great job! Now you already know how
to separate mixtures through filtering and sieving.
D. Discussing new
concepts and practicing Based on the Activity that we’ve done earlier, what is filtering?
new skills #1. (Let the learners read. Literacy Integration)
Filtering – solid and liquid components can be separated with the use of filter
paper or filter cloth as a medium in which liquid passes through a filter paper
leaving insoluble solid material in the medium.
- What material remains in the filter cloth or paper when filtering is used to
separate mixtures? What are some examples of mixtures that can be
separated through filtering?
- What is sieving?
- Sieving – is as a method in which two or more components of different
sizes are separated from a mixture on the basis of the difference in their sizes
which uses a sieve
E. Discussing new
concepts & practicing new GROUP ACTIVITY (Differentiated Instruction)
skills #2 - The class will be divided into 4 groups. They will choose a leader and a
reporter from each group.
- Each group will receive an envelope which contained the task card and the
materials they will use in the activity.
- Be ready for a presentation after the 5 minutes countdown.
Group 1:
Write the technique in separating the following mixtures.
____________ 1. Hot water from the spaghetti pasta.
____________ 2. Sand and stones __________4. Meat and soup
____________ 3. Salt and corn __________ 5. Cornstarch & pebbles
Group 2: Differentiate filtering from sieving through a poster. Draw and label
them in a manila paper.
Group 3: Give 2 examples of mixtures that can be separated through filtering and
2 mixtures that can be separated through sieving. Fill-in the table with your
answer.

Assesment 3) mixtures. Is it Sieving or Filtering?
G. Finding Practical
Applications of concepts Answer the following.
and skills in daily living Direction: Read each statement and give the best answer.
1. Andrei wants to bake a cake for the birthday of his mother. He found out
that the flour he will be using mixed up with some dried seeds. What
technique will he use and why?
2. Jed’s father attached a piece of cloth to the faucet where the water comes
out. What’s the use of the cloth? What ways in separating mixtures should
his father used and why?
(Valuing)
Do you think filtering and sieving are important in our everyday activities? Why?
