ER: AREA:
TIME: 11:05-11:55 QUARTER: 1
I.
OBJECTIVES
A. Content The learners demonstrate an understanding of different techniques to separate mixtures.
Standards
B. Performance The learners should be able to separate desired materials from common and local
Standards products.
C. Learning Describe techniques in separating mixtures such as filtering and sieving.
Competencies
a. Identify mixtures that can be separated through filtering and sieving
b. Give importance to the process of separating mixtures using sieving and filtering
into everyday life.
c. Practice the process of separating mixtures which uses filtering and sieving and
filtering.

Objective # 6 Maintained learning environments that promote fairness, respect and care
to encourage learning.
4. REVIEW
Suspension - Is a Heterogeneous mixture where visible particles can be seen from the
naked eye as it settles down at the bottom or float on top when left undisturbed.
Colloid – Is a mixture that exhibits both properties of liquid and solid and it is called
non- uniform mixture because the particles do not settle but remain dispersed
throughout the medium.
B. Giving of
Objectives
Say: In separating the coconut milk from its meat we should use an appropriate
separating technique to do.
The technique of separating soluble solid from a liquid is done with the use of Filter Cloth
and or Filter paper this is called FILTERING.
D. Establishing A common example of filtering that uses cloth or filter paper is coffee brewing.
the Purpose
of the
Lesson.
(ENGAGE)
A lot of coffee lover are familiar with it.
When separating two solid materials where one particle is fine and the other is coarse,
one uses a strainer. This is called SIEVING.
FILTERING - Solid and liquid components can be separated with the use of filter paper
or filter cloth as a medium in which liquid passes through filter paper leaving insoluble
solid material in the medium.
ACTIVITY TIME! ⏰
Group Activity
The class will be divided into 2 groups, group 1 will do the filtering while group 2 will do
the sieving technique. The learners will read first the procedures before they will do the
activity. Then, they will answer the questions and write it at the back of the card.
Filtering
Procedures:
First, insert the funnel in the mouth of the plastic cup
then, fold the filter paper into half and fold it into half again.
Wet the filter paper with the small amount of water and slowly pour the muddy mixture in
the cups.
Finally, we now have filtered water.
Objective # 5 Established safe and secure learning environments to enhance learning
through the consistent implementation of policies, guidelines and procedures.
QUESTIONS:
Procedures:
First, put the sieve to the bowl. Then put the mixture of the flour and mongo sieve and
slowly shake it. Observe what’s inside the plastic bowl.
QUESTIONS:
Did you find our activity interesting? Great job! learners. Now you already know how to
separate mixtures through filtering and sieving. Excellent!
F. ORAL ACTIVITY

WHAT’S MORE
new
concepts I. Identify the technique of separating mixtures. Write Sieving or Filtering.
and
practicing 1. Flour from small pebbles
New skills 2. mongo from baby power
3. milk from grated coconut
(EXPLORE) 4. dried tea leaves from hot water
______ 5. sand from water
ANSWER:
1. Sieving
2. Sieving
3. Filtering
4. Filtering
5. Filtering
Direction: Put the mixtures into their correct column. Choose the correct answer
from the box.
2. What type of mixture will you form when you put dried tea leaves in hot water and
then put some ice cubes and sugar in it? What separating technique would you use to
extract the dried tea leaves from the hot water?
Ans: Iced tea! Filtering, because the dried tea leaves are insoluble and only hot
water will pass through the filter paper leaving the dried tea leaves.
H. Making Question:
Generalizati What have you learned from our lesson today?
on
Complete the following paragraph
I learned that...
Filtering of solid and liquid mixtures can be separated with the use of
and as a medium in which liquid passes through filter paper
leaving materials in the medium. While _________ is as a method in which two or
more components of different sizes are separated from a mixture on the basis of the
difference in their sizes which uses a sieve.
2.Which of the following mixtures will use a filter cloth to separate a solid from a liquid
extract?
a. flour with stones
b. powder chalk with seeds
c. baby powder with pebbles
d. milk from grated coconut
4. Yesha accidentally mixed the ground rice that she will be using in making "bibingka"
or rice cakes and "puto" with pebbles
while looking for her other ingredients. How will Yesha remove the pebbles from the
ground rice?
a. she will use filter paper to remove it.
b. she will use the evaporation process to remove it.
c. she will use the decantation process to remove it.
d. she will use a sieve to remove it.
5. How will you separate the calamansi seeds from calamansi juice?
