1) A static pile load test was carried out on a 0.8-m-diameter steel pipe pile installed 21 m into a
loose-to-medium sandy soil. The pile was driven into the soil. Selected load displacement data
are shown in the table on the next page. (a) Determine the allowable load if the serviceability
limit state is 12 mm. (b) Is the maximum load the ultimate load? Justify your answer. (c) Discuss
some of the issues you would consider in the interpretation of the data.
Load (kN) 0 800 1100 2250 2800 3200 3500 3600 3620 3618
Displacement 0 2.5 3.8 7.5 10 12.5 15 20 21 26
(mm)
2) The soil profile and soil properties at a site are shown in the table below. A group of 12 concrete
piles in a 3 * 4 matrix and of length 12 m is used to support a load. The pile diameter is 0.45 m
and pile spacing is 1.5 m. Determine the allowable load capacity for a factor of safety of 2.
Calculate the total settlement (elastic and consolidation) under the allowable load. Assume, Ep =
20 *106 kPa.

3) Determine the length, L, of a driven timber pile required to support the load shown in Figure. The
diameter of the pile is 450 mm. A factor of safety of 2 is required. Assume the pile–soil interface
friction is equal to the critical state friction angle.
4) A square precast concrete pile of sides 0.4 m is to be driven 12 m into the soil strata shown in
Figure. Estimate the allowable load capacity for a factor of safety of 2. Owing to changes in
design requirements, the pile must support 20% more load. Determine the additional
embedment depth required.
5) A group of vertical piles are subjected to an eccentric force Q of 2600kN as shown in figure. Q
is located 0.2m from x-axis and 0.15m from the y-axis. Design a pile cap using S300, C25 and
a column dimension of 30*30 cm.

6) Design the cantilever retaining wall (stem, heel and toe slabs) with the cross-section shown in
Figure below, which retains a 5m depth of soil having the groundwater table at 1.0m below the
ground level.
Design Parameters:
 Soil Bearing Capacity, qall = 100 kPa
 Coefficient of Soil Friction, ф = 30°
 Unit Weight of Soil, γs = 18 kN/m3
 Unit Weight of Water, γw = 9.81 kN/m3
 Unit Weight of Concrete, γc = 25 kN/m3
 Surcharge, q = 10 kN/m2
 Ground Water Level = 1m from 0.00 level
 Height of Wall = 2.0m
 C 30 concrete class
 S 500 steel grade
 Concrete cover = 75mm
7) The side of an excavation 8.8 m deep in the sand is to be supported by an anchored sheet pile
wall. The anchors are spaced at 2.0 m centers at a depth of 1.5 m from the surface. The water
table is 6.4 m below the ground surface. The unit weight of the sand above the water table is γd
= 17 kN/m3, and the saturated unit weight is γsat = 20 kN/m3 below the water table. Shear
parameters are c = 0 kN/m2 and ϕ = 38.5°. A surcharge of q = 10 kN/m 2 is applied on the
surface. Take a factor of safety for the passive earth pressure Fs = 1.2 and a factor of safety for
penetration depth = 20%.

N.B:
 Use GEO limit state design and apply any reasonable assumptions whenever necessary.
 For design problems , use available software (Plaxis, GTSNX, Bentley, Geo 5, Deep EX
etc.) to model and compare hand calculations
