Dear Teacher!
SUNup! Engaging REAL-WORLD tasks for eighth graders is an integrated skills book which has
been developed based on the Costa Rican English new program starting in 2017 for seventh
graders. The book is ideal to study over an academic year. Students practice the four skills
through communicative activities that follow the Task Based Approach in four stages.

To achieve the language competence, this book is divided into six scenarios, each scenario
is divided into four themes and an extension section called review and expand. Each theme
organizes the tasks into two main components: oral and written comprehension, and oral and
written production.

The Action Oriented Approach states that students are social agents who use the target
language to perform specific actions in real life contexts. To be coherent with this basic principle,
the eighth grade English book includes the use of digital technology in the development of
mini-projects and critical thinking by letting students make decisions through problem-solving
situations.

SUNup! Engaging REAL-WORLD tasks for eighth graders has been designed to consolidate the
A2 band, based on the Common European Framework.
In the extension activities, students are expected to reinforce grammar and sentence frames
as well as reading comprehension. At the end of each scenario, students are expected to
check their progress which derive from the linguistic competences “Learner can …” using a
Can-do check list.

A flexible classroom arrangement is recommended so that students can have opportunities to

walk around and work in pairs or individually, which will provide them with the opportunity to
develop learners’ meta-cognitive, meta-affective, and meta-social strategies in an organized,
purposeful and scaffolded learning experience.

Besides the students’ book, teachers have access to the audio- material and the teachers’
guide. The F PRIMA Publishing house focuses on supporting English Teachers in the process of
understanding and implementing the new English syllabus approved by the Consejo Superior
de Educación in the year 2016.

Thank you for your commitment to the goal of transforming English Classrooms across Costa
Rica.

My best friends are Tom and David. We all are in the same class. Teenagers often complain
they are bored and have nothing to do. I can’t understand them. I’m never bored. If the
weather is nice, we go for a walk or we ride our bikes. We often play soccer, basketball,
or frisbee in the park; and when it is rainy, we go to the sports center. There we usually play
table tennis, do karate or go swimming. At home, I usually listen to music or read magazines
and books. Of course, as other teenagers, I often surf on the Internet or play computer
games – but not always! In the evenings, I sometimes watch TV. I often invite my friends
over for dinner or a cup of tea and we play chess or cards. On weekends, we go hiking or
fishing. Sometimes we go to the cinema; we like comedies.

Hunt the Thimble

This is a game I always used to play with my grandmother. One
player hides a thimble (a small cap that you place over your
finger to protect it while sewing) or another small object in a
room, while the other players stay outside. The other players
then return to the room and look for the object. The player who
hid the thimble can give clues or say ‘hot’ or ‘cold’ depending
on how close the players are to the object. The person who
finds the item first wins and gets to hide it for the next round.

Read the following text about an unusual sport.

Bed Racing
The sport of Bed Racing has been embraced by the people of the North Yorkshire Town of
Knaresborough, England. The first race in 1965 was only open to Army, Navy and American
Marines, but now the competition is open to anyone. The competitors race in teams of
five, plus one on the bed. Each team must provide their own bed, decorated in the theme
for the year. The bed runs on four wheels, but also needs to be able to float. The 3-km run
race begins and ends at Conyngham Hall, an open grassland surrounded by an area of
parkland offering leisure activities, woodland, and riverside walks. About halfway through
the race, the teams face the one-in-five gradient climb to Castle Top before it’s back
down the hill and toward the final challenge – crossing a river.

How to Play [American] Handball-The Street Rules

By Jenn, August 11, 2017

Handball is similar to racquetball. The player plays with the hands and hits a rubber ball
against a wall. There is street and professional handball.
When I was a teenager, I used to play street handball at the park. Many kids and I would
play all day long. I was a good player. We would compete and laugh a lot.
To play American street handball the player needs a small squeezable ball, a pair of
handball gloves to protect the hands, comfortable clothing, glasses to protect the eyes,
and sneakers.
A handball player has to have hand-eye coordination and be skillful to play singles or
doubles. Some of its rules depend on the type of handball. For singles, the server hits the
ball. When the ball goes out of the server’s area, it is the other player’s turn. The player has
two chances.
For doubles, the rules for you and your partner are the same. Each of the members has
a chance to hit the ball. Once your partner’s play is over, the other team then starts.
The player gets a point if he/she is serving. The ball must hit the wall before it hits the floor.
Basically, you never want the ball to hit the floor before the wall. Participants play the game
to 7, 11 or 21. An automatic win happens when the other person or team does not score
anything, and you score 7 first.

The Little Devil’s Celebration

Last year, I went to one of the Costa Rica’s biggest indigenous events. The native Boruca
community celebrated their traditional “Fiesta de los Diablitos”. The four-day annual event
is celebrated from Dec. 30 to Jan. 2 in the Boruca village in Talamanca Mountains.
The people of Boruca keep their rich ancestral traditions alive, expressed through their
language, legends, dance and crafts. I learned that the Borucas were particularly famous
for their colorful, hand-carved masks made from lightweight balsa wood. I saw that these
masks were an important part in the Fiesta de los Diablitos, because it was a representation
of the Boruca’s victory over the Spanish conquerors. Something that called my attention
was that one man took the role of a mock bull, representing the evil Spanish intruders.
However, only Boruca men who have carved their own mask may participate.
During the four-day festival, the bull and the diablitos performed a ritual dance pretending
to fight around a bonfire, known as the Dance of the Diablitos. On the last day, the diablitos
triumph over the Spanish – just as they did historically. The bull is “killed” – the costume is
burned on the large bonfire in the middle. It was a different experience for me.

The Loi Krathong festival has been celebrated throughout Thailand for centuries,
usually to mark the end of the rainy season.
Each year, thousands of paper lanterns are released
into the night sky to symbolically ward off bad luck, while
rivers are covered by floating flower lanterns, adorned
with candles cast into waterways to wish for good luck.
With flower and flame, the city of Chiang Mai comes
alive during these festive days each November.
The event has been transformed over the years from a
reverent temple ritual to a rowdy street party that lasts
for days. The real meaning of the festival is to worship
Buddha and the goddess of the river. Also for people the
festivity represents a way of letting go of all one’s hatred,
anger, and defilements.

On the fourth Thursday of November, in houses around the United States, families get together
for a feast or a large meal. Almost all families eat turkey and cranberry sauce and have pumpkin
pie for dessert. This feast is part of a very special day: the holiday of Thanksgiving.

In 1620 the Pilgrims made a difficult trip across the ocean from England. They landed in what is
now Massachusetts.

The Pilgrims first winter was very hard, almost half of the group died
of cold, hunger and diseases. But Native Americans taught the
Pilgrims to plant corn, to hunt and to fish. When the next fall came
the Pilgrims had plenty of food.

Hi Friends! My name’s Sandra and I live in Hilltown. It is in the south of

England. It isn’t a very big town. About 9,000 people live here. There
are about thirty shops in Hilltown and there are three supermarkets. You
can buy everything you need in the town. There are two banks and a
post office on Main Street. There is a police station and a library, too.
You can find a big market where you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables,
meat and dairy products. I like going to the market with my mom.
There are three churches downtown, and there is a park, too. In the
park, children can play because there is a playground. In our town,
you can find some restaurants, and there are five cafés. My favorite
café is Ice cave. It’s on Park Street, and the ice cream is fantastic here!

There are three elementary and two high schools in Hilltown. My high
school is on Mill Street. We have a very nice building. Next to our
school, there is a sports center. Every Wednesday afternoon, we play
badminton. If you want to see a film, you can go to the cinema in our
town, but unfortunately, there aren’t any theatres here. I like living in
Hilltown because it is a calm, neat place, and people are friendly.

I went to a nice clothing store last Friday. Many of their products were on sale; however, I
didn’t have enough money, so I had to choose just a few of them. There was an orange
blouse that cost $15 and a purple one whose price was $10. Of course, I chose the purple
one. There were also skirts at a very low price. The red ones were a little bit big, and the
green ones were medium. Since I am slim, I chose a green one. Finally, I went to see the
jeans. They had a reasonable price, but the brown ones were too light, and I prefer dark
colors. That’s why I bought the gray ones. I really had a good time choosing the best and

Practicing words with the final e (-ake, -ute, -ime).

A silent “e” can make the vowel before it into a long sounding vowel. For example, in
the words “cute” and “time” the “e” prevents them from being “cut” and “Tim.” The “e”
allows them to make the long sound and say their names.
Listen to your teacher dictating words with the final –e. Make sure you spell them

They drive to the department store on Oak street. Mrs. Smith uses the escalator to go to the
Electrical Department on the third floor and Tom takes the stairs up to the Men’s Clothing
Department on the first floor.
When she gets to the Electrical Department, she finds that cameras are sold in the
Photography Department on the ground floor. She takes the elevator down and asks the
sales assistant there for some help. She doesn’t know much about cameras and needs
some advice.
He recommends an automatic camera by Olympus, but it is too expensive. She asks him
if he has anything a little cheaper and he tells her about a special offer on the Pentax
range. It still seems expensive, so she thanks the assistant and decides to shop around, first.
Meanwhile, Tom is looking at the jumpers. He only has ten pounds to spend so he can’t

Where to go for rock climbing in Costa Rica

Amanda Zúñiga | January 30, 2016

Costa Rica is great for doing extreme sports: hiking, surfing, ziplining, bungee-jumping,
parachuting and many other activities. Rock climbing is not an exception, and Costa Rica
has incredible places to climb.

Rock climbing is an extreme sport. Rock climbers climb up a natural rock formation or
artificial rock wall. They have to be physically and mentally strong, focused, skilled and
mentally controlled.

Rock climbers in Costa Rica can go to rock walls in Cañón del Río Uruca, Santa Ana; Aserrí
Rock, in the city of Aserrí, south of San Jose; Cerro de la Muerte; Pico Blanco, in Escazú;
Providencia, in Santa María de Dota; Atenas, in Alajuela; and Escalada Cachí, in Cartago.
There are also artificial walls at some training gyms around the country.

Adapted from The Tico Times http://www.ticotimes.net/travel/2016/01/dont-know-practice-rock-climbing-costa-rica/

Mary234: I rock climbed in Aserrí on my last vacation. I agree with Amanda: rock
climbing is an incredible experience. The freedom, the fresh air… Everything was
amazing. I’ll never forget it. It was amazing! I really recommend it.

The Wonderful Countryside in Costa Rica

The countryside in Costa Rica is just wonderful, the best way to enjoy it is driving around.
During my visit, I rented a car and after staying for one day in San José I drove to the
Arenal Volcano area: it takes from 3 to 4 hours. The scenery is great, I took a different
route on the way back, so I could explore different areas.
Driving is a little bit challenging. Most of the roads are not in very good condition. If
you add up traversing mountains and no shoulders, it can be intimidating. The good
thing about driving on your own is that you can jump anywhere at any time and you’re
not tied to any schedule. The morning I started was somehow foggy. I liked the effect
of the fog in the mountains, and the contrast with the greens and shadows.

Some thoughts on camping in Costa Rica

Camping in Costa Rica is a great way to get out of the routine and experience
the fascinating night and very early morning hours in the tropical forest or beach.
Twenty years ago, people used to go camping to almost all beaches in Costa Rica.
Nowadays, camping is prohibited or at least strongly discouraged. If you do find
a place to camp and leave stuff in your tent, it might be stolen. In a few beach
areas (Nosara, Puerto Viejo, Uvita) where real estate prices haven’t gotten too high,
there are commercial campsites for backpackers. Most provide tents and storage
facilities for your valuables while you’re out hiking or surfing.

1. What are the benefits to go camping?

___________________________________________________________________________

2. How was camping before and how it is now?

___________________________________________________________________________

3. What do some places offer to backpackers?

___________________________________________________________________________

4. Would you like to backpack in Costa Rica? Why or why not?

forms, hotel registrations, and others. A small note pad seems to be useful to write
information quickly, also a flash drive to get all the documents you need in case of
emergency, some band-aids for those blisters that appear due to long walking, a
neck pillow, especially if you are stuck in the middle seat of the airplane. Moreover,
some face wipes can help you in after sleeping and to remove make-up, a tape for
multiple purposes, and some plastic bags. In order to travel safety, a money belt is
recommended.

Changes in a Beautiful National Park

Corcovado: Change is coming to a timeless place

By Karl kahler | May 15, 2017

Corcovado, in Puntarenas, is an immense place. There’s something interesting far from

the crowds with the company of the animals only.
We saw anteaters, white-faced monkeys, spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, white-noised
coatis, red-tailed squirrels and a tent-making bat, lizards, frogs, spiders, insects, birds, and
Halloween crabs.
Corcovado National Park is a tropical rain forest. The forest looks untouched, but it is
changing.
In the past, visitors to Sirena Ranger Station could choose to go camping or stay in a
cabina. They could bring their own food or buy it ready-to-eat there. Now, new visitors to
Sirena cannot bring their own food anymore. Sirena serves the meals for $20 (breakfast) or
$25 (lunch/dinner).
Visitors cannot camp there any longer. There are 70 new bunk beds, and new, clean
bathrooms and showers. Tourists pay $30 for this service.
The food rules are an important change for many of the tour operators. Those operators
fed tourists sandwiches, fruit and other kinds of food, but operators and visitors cannot offer
or bring their own food anymore.
