 PREFACE

Price collection is one of the major items of work undertaken by the Department of
Economics and Statistics. The importance and usefulness of the information pertaining to the
price movements has much significance. This Department has been collecting different types
of prices viz. Farm price, Market price, etc. (both Wholesale and Retail). These prices are
being widely used for various purposes such as for the preparation of Indices, to provide
compensation to Farmers and for tendering consumable articles for Govt. Institutions.
Among the Retail prices, the statement of daily prices of fifty essential commodities being
collected on daily basis from District Headquarters assume significance, because it is being
forwarded daily to the office of the Chief Minister and Minister of Food and Civil
Supplies,Minister for Agriculture,ChiefSecretary,Food and civil Supplies Secretary, Planning
secretary,,Department of Civil supplies, Reserve Bank of India, Consumerfed etc. In addition
to the daily prices, weekly prices are also being collected every Friday.

From January 2004 onwards a publication titled “PRICE BULLETIN” is being

prepared and published monthly incorporating the Retail prices of main essential
commodities under 8 major groups. Group wise analysis has been made with reference to
current month, previous month and the corresponding month of the previous year with
suitable pictorial representations.

This publication is being prepared and published by Prices Division.I appreciate the
work done by Sri.Damodaran.K,Additional Director (Prices).Sri.Suresh.U (Assistant
Director), Smt.Naseera.M (Research Officer), Sri.Sooraj Cheruthottathil (Statistical
Assistant Grade-I) and all the Price Reporters and Price Supervisors in the Districts for
preparing such a worthy publication.

REVIEW ON RETAIL PRICES OF ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES

OCTOBER 2021

INTRODUCTION

This bulletin reflects the average retail prices of essential

commodities for the month of October 2021. A mixed trend has been

seen in the retail prices under report when compared with that of the

last months as well as the corresponding month of previous year.

Statement showing the monthly average retail prices of essential

commodities for the month of October of the previous year 2020,

previous month September 2021 and current month of October 2021

along with the percentage of variation over the previous month and

the current month of the previous year are included in this report.

GroupWise analysis has been made with reference to the current

month, the previous month and the corresponding month of the

previous year with suitable pictorial representation.

1. RICE
Comparison of state average Retail prices of different varieties of Rice
During the month a marginal upward trend was observed in the state average retail price of Rice
varieties when compared with the prices of the previous month, while a mixed trend was observed when
compared with the price of the corresponding month of the previous year.
The State average retail prices of White Andhra Vella and Red Matta increased by 0.41% and 0.16% while
that of Red Chamba remains unchanged when compared with the prices of the previous month.
When compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous year, the state average retail
prices of Red Matta decreased by 2.85 % and White Andra Vella increased by 0.38%, while that of Red Chamba
remains unchanged.
The following table and diagram represent the prices and percentage of variation over month and year of
Rice.

2. PULSES
Comparison of state average Retail prices of Pulses.
During the month a general increasing trend was observed for Pulses except for Greengram when compared
with the prices of the previous month. However when compared with the previous year a mixed trend observed.
The State average retail price of all items of Pulses showed an upward trend up to 1.65% when compared
with the prices of the previous month except Green gram.
When compared with the price of the corresponding month of the previous year the state average retail
price of all items of pulses showed an upward trend up to 9.02% except Green gram, Blackgram split with husk ,
Blackgram split w/o husk, Green gram dhal and Dhal(Tur).
Notable increase was seen in the price of Red gram (9.02%),Bengalgram Small(5.29%),and Peas
dhal(4.70%) when compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous year.Notable decrease
was seen in the price of Greengram 7.22%.

3. OTHER FOOD ITEMS

Comparison of state average Retail prices of other food items.
During the month a marginal fluctuation was observed in the state average retail price of
Other food items when compared with the prices of the previous month but a mixed trend prevails
when compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous year.
When compared with the prices of previous month, the price of all items of other food items
showed a marginal variations except Milk(cow’s), Baby food(Amul) and Mutton with bones.
When compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous year the state
average retail price of Other Food Items showed a downward trend up to 13.34%.Notable decrease
was seen in the price of Egg (Hens)White Lagon13.34%, notable increase was seen in the price of
Sugar(OM)6.5% and Mutton with bones 5.53%.

4. OIL AND OILSEEDS

Comparison of state average Retail prices of Oil and oilseeds.
During the month a mixed trend was observed in the State average retail price of Oil and Oilseeds
when compared with the price of the previous month as well as the corresponding month of the previous year.
When compared with the prices of previous month,the State average retail prices of Oil and Oilseeds
showed a marginal variations. Notable decrease was seen in the price of Refined Oil(1.61%), notable increase
was seen in the price of Groundnut Oil (0.45%).
When compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous year the state average retail
price of Oil and Oilseeds showed an upward trend up to 30.55% except Coconut without husk and Coconut oil.
Notable increase was seen in the price of Refined Oil(30.55%), Gingelly oil (13.41%) and Groundnut
Oil (6.82%). Notable decrease was seen in the price of Coconut without husk 9.33%.

5. SPICES AND CONDIMENTS

Comparison of state Average Retail prices of Spices and Condiments:
During the month a mixed trend was observed in the State average retail price of spices and
Condiments when compared with the price of the previous month as well as with the corresponding month of
the previous year.
The state average retail price of all items of Spices and Condiments showed a mixed trend when
compared with the price of the previous month. Notable decrease was seen in the price of garlic (5.02%),
notable increase was seen in the price of Methy(4.9%), while all other items showed a marginal variations
except Turmeric.
When compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous year, notable increase was
seen in the price of Mustard(16.92%) and Methy(14.96%), notable decrease was seen in the price of Onion
small(50.96%) and Garlic (22.24%), while all other items showed marginal variations.

6. TUBERS
Comparison of state Average Retail prices of Tubers
During the month general decreasing trend except for Potato was observed in the state average retail
price of Tubers when compared with the prices of the previous month, However when compared with previous
year a mixed trend was observed.
When compared with the price of the previous month, the state average retail price of all items of
Tubers showed a downward trend up to 7.39% except Potato.
Decreasing trend was observed in the retail prices of Tubers when compared with the prices of the
corresponding month of the previous year. Notable decrease was seen in the price of Potato (36.5%),
Coloccassia (16.82%), Tapioca raw (15.45%) and Chenai (5.74%).

7. VEGETABLES
Comparison of state average Retail prices of Vegetables.
A general increasing trend except for Chilies and banana was observed in the State average retail price
of vegetables when compared with the prices of the previous month. However when compared with the previous
year a mixed trend was observed.
When compared with the prices of the previous month,the state average retail prices of all items of
vegetables except Banana green and Chillies green showed an upward trend up to 91.52%. Notable increase
was seen in the price of Tomatto (91.52%),Onion Big(49.36%) and Ladys finger(29.97%).Notable decrease
was seen in the price of Banana green 6.11%.
When compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous year, the state average
retail price of all items of vegetables except Tomatto, Cucumber, Ladys finger ,Ashgourd and Plantain green
showed a downward trend up to 39.03%. Notable decrease was seen in the price of Cabbage(39.03%) and Onion
big (33.37%), while that of notable increase was seen in the price of Tomatto (34.9%).

8. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Comparison of state Average Retail prices of miscellaneous items
A mixed trend was observed in the State average retail price of miscellaneous items when compared
with the prices of the previous month, as well as the corresponding month of the previous year.
When compared with the prices of the previous month,the state average retail prices of all items of
Miscellaneous items except mundu mull , Electric Bulb (Philips) , and Paper showed marginal variations.
When compared with the prices of the corresponding month of the previous Year the state average
retail price of all items except Tobacco,Mundu mull, Electric bulb (Philips) and Firewood(Local split) showed
an upward trend up to 19.3%. Notable increase was seen in the price of Crocin (19.3%), Torch Battery
(Eveready) (11.64%), Toilet Soap(Lux) (6.71%) and Paper (5.79%) respectively.Notable decrease was seen in
the price of Tobacco 6.14%.
