I gravitate towards the latter standpoint, for the reasons given below.

A school of thought holds that social network platforms are detrimental to our society, while
others are convinced that they are beneficial for individuals. While both points of view are
justifiable to a certain degree, I gravitate towards the latter standpoint, for the reasons given
below.
Admittedly, it is understandable why some argue that social media has an unfavorable effect on

users. One justification for their argument is that social media can take a toll on our study
results. This is because when students abuse social network platforms, such as Facebook,
Instagram or tiktok, they might not focus on lessons in school as well as neglecting their
homework, which leaves a void in their understanding of those subjects. As a consequence,
social media addicts might not achieve their desired academic performance. Another concern is
cyberbullying. Lately, cyberbullying has become increasingly common among students. For
example, last year, in Vietnam, there was a female student uploading her dancing and singing
video on Facebook, but people criticized and body shamed her. Consequently, she suffered from
a range of mental illnesses, including anxiety, depression, and eventually she committed suicide.
Despite the above-mentioned arguments, I believe that social media has favorable effects on
society and individuals. One reason for my belief is that it removes geographical barriers. This
can be seen in the way that when we connect with new friends from groups on social media
platforms, either local or international, we can build relationships and share our insights. This
can expand mutual knowledge of each other's culture, tradition, and practices. Another
convincing point is that social network platforms can create employment opportunities.
Facebook is a prime example. In order for this app to function smoothly, this company would
have to hire a large number of employees for different positions, such as developers, marketing,
human resources, and quality engineer, which effectively reduces the rate of unemployment.
In conclusion, although social media platforms can have an adverse bearing on academic
performance, as well as raise concerns on online harassment, I believe that their popularity is
more beneficial, as they allow us to connect with people, and spur job growth.

Another concern
When people use social media, they can join groups of like-minded people from
numerous nations. This allows them to expand their social circle, which can remove the
feeling of loneliness, especially for those who live alone.

When people use social networks, they can join floods of groups of like- minded people from
various locations across the globe. As such, they can expand their social circle. For example, in
Viet Nam, many students have used social network platforms to connect with people around the
globe in order to improve their language skills. As a result, they can refine their language skills,
while learning about cultural diversity.

lonely from homesickness.

When rural high school students move to cities in order to study at universities or work, they can
use smartphones to connect people on social network platforms such as Facebook, Zalo or
Instagram. This helps them keep in touch with their old friends by video calls, or sharing status
everyday and know a lot of new friends, thus removing the feeling of loneliness, experiencing
many new things.
