MATH LONG RANGE PLANS Updated 2020 GRADE 7

Breakdown of 300 minutes of math per week:

1) 10 Minute Number Talks and Number Sense Routines - 10 minutes a day to be done at a time other than the
math block (e.g., 10 minutes first thing in the morning or after a break) (10 x 5 = 50 minutes)
NOTE: A NUMBER OF TOPICS FROM THE CURRICULUM APPEAR IN THIS SECTION (e.g., mental math) AND
ARE NOT IN THE MATH BLOCK
2) Math Block Topic - This is the regular 50 minute block (5 x 50 = 250 minutes)

C4 Mathematical Modelling: Mathematical modelling is integrated into all aspects of the math program, including the
social-emotional learning expectations and the mathematical processes. For more information, please see:

1 Comparing and ordering Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):
numbers on a number line - Growth mindset principles, establishing group/collaborative norms,
co-creating success criteria around SEL goals, establishing a safe
community of learners, etc.
NOTE: Success criteria for SEL goals should be posted and referred to
throughout the year as needs arise. Although SEL focus days are included in
these long range plans, it is more important that teachers respond and
react to the immediate needs of students, and TEACH and REVIEW these
skills in context.
2 Addition Number Talks Place Value
(properties of operations: - Whole numbers to 1 000 000 000 (read, represent, compare and order;
associative and write in expanded form using powers of 10)
commutative property) - Numbers in real life contexts
(start with story contexts) Note: integers, fractions and decimals are addressed later in the LRP
3 Small group help (addition Place Value con’t
number talks) - Exponential Notation, GCF, LCM
4 Addition Number Talks and Area and Perimeter; Square Roots and Perfect Squares; Circles
the Addition Algorithm - area and perimeter of 2D shapes
- identify and represent perfect squares, determine square roots

- use relationships between the radius, diameter and circumference to
explain the circumference formula for a circle
- use relationships between the radius, diameter and area of a circle to
explain the area formula for a circle
- construct circles when given the radius, diameter or circumference

Month: October
