Meiosis Lesson Plan (Project II)
Objective:
Materials:
Procedure:
To have the students glean basic understanding of the topic of cellular meiosis. To promote higher level analytical thinking. To demystify the topic of gametic fusion and origins of crossing over and genetics. To have the students be able to differentiate between meiosis and mitosis. Blank, white paper String Glue Scissors Colored pencils At the start of class show a short powerpoint presentation on the steps of meiosis giving a detailed description of each stage. o Prophase I: DNA has all been replicated, homologous (chromosome pairs) form synapses and exchange genetic material. o Prometaphase I: the nucleus is completely dissolved; the kinetochores are beginning to form. o Metaphase I: all chromosomes are aligned at the metaphase plate in the center of the cell. o Anaphase I: the chromosomes are pulled apart. Each cell has two chromatids still connected by a centromere which means there are only 23 chromosomes per cell. (haploid) o Telophase and Cytokinesis I: the cell begins to pinch apart using a constricting actin fiber loop and eventually splits into two new cells, each with 23 chromosomes, but 46 chromatids. o Meiosis II is essentially the same except DNA is not replicated preceeding

Becka Kangas Lesson plan for 9th graders it, and the sister chromatids split in Anaphase II leading to proper gametic cells with 23 chromosomes and chromatids. Go through the activity detailed in the lower section. Give the students a handout at the end of class with the URL to the scribd site which would contain a more detailed description of meiosis complete with links to quizzes, videos, and short animations to help further foster an understanding of this important process. Have the students break up into pairs at the end of the powerpoint presentation and create a meiosis storyboad using string for chromosomes. The students can use self-check quizzes linked on the scribd site There would also probably be a quiz and there would most definitely be questions about meiosis on a formal exam. http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/tutorials/meiosis/main. http://highered.mcgrawhill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter28/animation__how_meiosis_works. html http://highered.mcgrawhill.com/olcweb/cgi/pluginpop.cgi?it=swf::535::535::/sites/dl/free/0072437316/120074/ bio19.swf::Stages%20of%20Meiosis
