Burma, a pair of obverse and reverse dies for the 1 rupee of CS1214 (1852), The pieces that follow here show: 1) an
obverse in excellent condition: peacock, steel die. A rare and most desirable numismatic souvenir of Burma. 2) a reverse
die in considerably weathered condition: the surface oxidised. The Heaton Mint won a contract to supply a complete mint
for Burma. This turnkey project included dies for all denominations. Some years later, with Britain at war with Burma, the
Mint was captured and a number of tools taken as souvenirs. These were principally dies, normally of 1 Rupee, and very few of the
lower denominations (1 pair of dies)

Malaya and British Borneo, uniface reverse archival photographic proof for an unissued $10, ca.17th April 1952, bird
at centre, arms of member states at bottom, denomination at upper left and right corners, pencil inscription on reverse
‘With amended hints’. Issuing body not named on the note but clearly intended for the new 1953 issue. A spectacular
archival photogrpahic proof. A wonderful modernistic design, way ahead of its time, for the new issue of the Currency
Board, which ultimately appeared less than a year later, dated 21st March 1953. One could speculate that the Singapore
bird series of a few years later (1976) was inspired by this design and this designer. For an absolutely unique item and

Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya & British Borneo, a pair of uniface obverse and reverse archival
Photographic model for an unissued $100, 1952, serial number A/11 00000, Queen Elizabeth II at right, flower
patterns, reverse arms of member states, plant at centre, DLR stamp ‘DLR Studio Photographed 1 May 1952’ on both.
While this design was not ultimately adopted, note that it does bear the portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth. This
fascinating note was prepared by Thomas de la Rue, and completed by 1 May 1952. Elizabeth’s father, King George
VI, passed on 6 February 1952. Accordingly, Elizabeth had only been on the throne — uncrowned — for less than
three months when this proposed design was completed and undoubtedly submitted to the Currency Board. The note is
complimented by having a very striking back to go together with the front. (Pick unlisted), both graded PCGS Currency

in the name of the proposed Central Bank. An exceptional example of these appears here. Note that the Borneo states
of North Borneo, Brunei, and Sarawak are missing from the title and shields. As will be seen by the subsequent note, at
this point it was intended that Malaya and Borneo would go separate ways. Note that the July date is essentially identical
to that which appears on the following North Borneo, Brunei & Sarawak Currency Board note. (Pick unlisted), PCGS

North Borneo, Brunei and Sarawak Currency Board, $10, archival photograph model, Thomas de la Rue proposed
design with Queen Elizabeth portrait, dated by de la Rue 25 July 1957, With the independence of Malaya on 31 August
1957 the British colonies of North Borneo, Sarawak, and Brunei prepared for their future. Accordingly it would appear
that a distinct currency board would be set up to serve the needs of British Borneo. However, the Malaya and British
Borneo Currency Board continued its operations until 1967, and the planned currency board for British Borneo was not
enacted. The notes offered below are wonderful survivors of this period of regional history. (Pick unlisted), graded PMG

the same as the issued version except the text is in Tagalog. The issued notes are in English and the designs are
somewhat similar to United States banknotes, one can only wonder if there was a strong Amercan influcence on the
design of this series. (Pick 137pm for similar), PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated. A unique hand painted printer’s model and
likely one of the very first designs with the text in Taglog as opposed to Spanish and English. Important.

Corporation in 1892 and the severe buffeting taken
by the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, Australia
& China (later the Mercantile Bank of India), even
though all British banks in the Straits continued in
business and paid their notes, it was decided to set up
a Currency Board.
The first notes of the Board appeared in 1898, and
ultimately comprised denominations from $1 through
the astronomical $10,000 -- $10,000 being 10,000
silver dollars.
The first notes were simple and probably inexpensive
De La Rue pri nt i ngs, wh ich t hen su f fered
counterfeiting due to the simplicity of design. As can
be seen by the unique model that follows, by 1915 it
was felt that new designs were needed to safeguard
the currency. At first these denominations were to be
$10, $50, $100, $1000, and ultimately $10,0000, all
for the first time with the portrait of the monarch,
George V.
However, while the inscription on the model indicates
that $10 was to be revised and issued with a portrait,
it is possible that due to the intense pressures of
WWI and great demands on Britain’s infrastructure,
that the $10 would have to wait. A new style of $10
was not in fact not issued until 1925, and without a
portrait.

The Government of Straits Settlements, $100, 1915, a spectacular and unique uniface obverse banknote model,
serial number A/7 00000, black grey on white, tiger below the bank name at top centre, arms at top right, George V at
top left. While the note illustrated only depicts the $1 changeover prototype, this design is the prototype for all higher
denominations in the Straits: The $50 first issued on 7 March 1916 (Chan Chin Cheung, page 111) The $100 first
issued on 7 March 1916 (Chan Chin Cheung, page 113) The $1000, lacking in Chan, but believed to have been first
issued in 1916 The $10,000, lacking in Chan, but believed to have been first issued in 1916. This design was modified
to become that which appears on the $50 through $10,000 of the following year, and many of these modifications are
evident on the model. Among these are cancellation strokes on the crown at left and the oval containing the portrait of
George V, the decorative element below the Chinese characters is deleted, the figures for ‘100’ at left are crossed out.
The model is serial numbered ‘A/7 00000’. However, when the issue was finalized in 1916 it was decided that a new
series of serials would be used. Thus the 1916 notes bear the prefix ‘B/1.’ The three signatories have been slashed out.
The date ‘1 March 1915’ was ultimately changed to one year later. The inscription at the bottom states ‘Signatures Black.
Design for $10 and above to be used with Watermark No. 7.’ This indicates that the $10 also at that time was planned
to have the new ‘portrait’ design, but for whatever reason the early style was maintained for that denomination. This
model is thus the key to the entire portrait series of Straits Settlements notes, and a once-only opportunity to acquire a
unique prototype for such sweeping change in the Straits Settlements monetary system. (Pick unlisted), PMG 64NET
(Printer’s Annotations, Previously Mounted). Unique.
