E Reading

What is friendship?
We asked six young people for their views.

Isabel
Sometimes, I just sit around with my school friends and talk. I can tell them anything and they always tell
me the truth. That’s the key thing in a friendship. I don’t like people who tell lies.

Max
My best friend, Andy, is very serious and intelligent. I’m the opposite. I’m a joker. I just like a laugh. I don’t
think it matters that we’re different though. Friends can be different, but still be a good fit.

Yasemin
I think the way people get to know people is different to how it was in the past. When my dad was a
teenager, his friends were people who lived near him. These days, people of my age meet some of their
friends for the first time on the internet.

Filip
I know lots of people on social media, but I don’t count them as real friends. I only have a small number of
people who I’d call friends. I see some of them every day at school. I don’t see some of my online friends
very much at all.

Priya
My best friends are all different. Claire is funny. Dana is generous. Isabel is clever. The one thing all my
friends have in common is that they are always there for me. That’s what’s important.

Martin
I think you should find friends who have similar interests to you. When I moved to a new area, I didn’t
know anybody at my new school, so I joined a drama group and made friends.
