GENERAL PREPARATION
Glue the pattern pages onto card or thick paper and cut out the pattern pieces to make your
templates.
Lay the fabric right side down with the grain/pile running down towards you. (Most stretch - sideways.)
Place your templates onto the wrong side of the fabric making sure the arrows point towards you.
Trace the templates with a permanent marker and cut out your pieces. (Be careful not to press too
hard or the ink will smudge and may even show through your material on the right side.) TIP*** For
black fleece I use a white Artline Paint Marker. Ask for a similar pen at your craft store)
Cut the snout, back and front head, tail and white tummy and white back pieces from white fleece.
Cut all the other pieces from black. Use scraps of coloured fleece for the bottle.
SEWING
* Always sew pieces with right sides together and use a 5mm/¼inch seam unless stated otherwise.
Body:
Sew each BLACK BACK PIECE to a WHITE BACK PIECE, then sew the BLACK TUMMY PIECE
to the WHITE TUMMY PIECE.
Sew the INNER ARM PIECES and INNER LEG PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE, matching the dots.
Sew the OUTER ARM PIECES and OUTER LEG PIECES to the BACK PIECES matching the dots.
Sew the TAIL PIECES together. Turn the tail right sides out and stuff with a little bit of toy stuffing.
Place the tail in position and sew in place when you sew the BACK PIECES together from H- J.
Pin and sew the Panda together at the sides. First sew along the front of one leg, up the side of
the tummy and “around the arm”, and sew a little bit further at the neck, to join the tummy and back
pieces together, between K and M. (This makes the neck a bit smaller so the head will fit nicely.)
Repeat for the other side.
Sew the Panda closed at the base. Sew along the back of one leg, continue across the base of the
TUMMY and BACK PIECES and sew along the back of the other leg.
Pin and sew the FOOT PAD PIECES in place.
Head:
Sew the SNOUT PIECE to the FRONT HEAD PIECE from A – B.
Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES together , as indicated on the pattern markings. from C – D.
Sew the EAR PIECES together and turn right side out. Place the ears in place and sew the BACK
HEAD PIECES to the FRONT HEAD PIECE, from E – D, then down the other side of the head –
E.
Fold the snout at F so you can sew the SNOUT, FRONT HEAD PIECE and BACK HEAD PIECES
closed from F- (via A/B)Ê - E - G.
Now for a secret trick! Take the piece of fleece that you saved when you cut out the head piece,
and with the head still inside out, sew this by hand over the opening to the snout (very roughly –
no need to be neat) Leave just a small opening for you to push the synthetic stuffing into the snout
area. This holds the stuffing inside the snout so you can make it nice and firm. Stitch the opening
closed when you have finished stuffing the snout really well.
With the head still inside out, sew the head to the body at the neck, I find the easiest way is to
position the head “inside” the body.
Sew the Panda closed at the back, leaving a gap above the tail to turn and stuff the Panda.
Bottle:
For the bottle, sew the BOTTLE PIECE together at the sides, leaving a gap for stuffing the bottle.
Sew the BOTTLE BASE PIECE in place. For the BOTTLE TOP PIECE, remember to sew on the
sewing line and then cut it out with a 5mm/¼inch seam allowance. Sew the BOTTLE TOP PIECE
to the BOTTLE PIECE.
ASSEMBLY
Turn the Panda right sides out and stuff the legs, arms and head with toy stuffing. Fill the rest of
the body with toy stuffing.
Turn the bottle right sides out, stuff it with toy stuffing and sew the gap closed on the side. Position
the bottle between the panda’s paws. Sew the paws together with strong black thread so that it
holds the bottle quite tightly. You can also sew the bottle in place or use Velcro pieces so it can be
taken on and off.
Use the templates to cut pieces of felt for the eyes and nose. Sew or glue these in place. Use black
embroidery thread to make the mouth.
Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the Panda’s back.
I have faith that you will respect the long hours and creative energy that have
gone into producing the Funky Friends Factory patterns.
Thank you, Pauline.
