STUDY GUIDE AND REVISION WORKSHEET

FOR THE 1ST ENDTERM TEST

PART I. MATH KNOWLEDGE REVIEW

Topic Math Knowledge

Analyze and - You can use equivalent ratios to find the percent of a number.
Solve Remember that a percent is a ratio that relates a number to 100.
Percent - You can use proportions to solve different types of percent problems.
Problems There are three values in a percent problem—the percent, the part,
and the whole. If you know two of these values, you can set up a
proportion to find the third value.

- A percent change can be an increase or a decrease. You can use an equation to find a
percent change.
change = percent change × original amount
A percent error is always a nonnegative value. You can use an equation to find a percent
error.
difference = percent error × actual
- You can use the percent equation to solve markup and markdown problems.
markup = percent markup × cost
markdown = percent markdown × selling price
- You consider four quantities when solving problems involving simple interest.
initial amount, or principal, P
interest rate, r
time, t
amount of simple interest, I = Prt.percent

Generate - You can use an algebraic expression to represent and solve a problem with unknown values.
Equivalent The expression can consist of coefficients, constants, and variables. You can substitute
Expressions values for variables to evaluate expressions.
- Properties of operations and combine like terms to simplify expressions. Like terms are
terms that have the same variable part.

- The Distributive Property allows you to multiply each term inside parentheses by a factor
that is outside the parentheses. This means that you can use the Distributive Property to
expand expressions.

- When you factor an expression, you write it as a product of two expressions. The new
expression is equivalent to the original expression. The greatest common factor (GCF) and
the Distributive Property are tools that you use when you need to factor an expression.
