CAT 1 DATE: NOV 2023 TIME: 30 MIN

a. Highlight the main speed control method that is employed in electric

traction
b. A 3-phase, 400-V, star-connected induction motor has a star-connected
rotor with a stator to rotor turn ratio of 6.5. The rotor resistance and
standstill reactance per phase are 0.05 Ω and 0.25 Ω respectively. What
should be the value of external resistance per phase to be inserted in the
rotor circuit to obtain maximum torque at starting and what will be rotor
starting current with this resistance?
c. A 220 V, 500 A, 600 rpm separately excited DC motor has an armature
and field resistance of 0.02 Ω and 10 Ω respectively. The load torque is
given by the expression TL=2000-2N, N-m, where N is the speed in rpm.
Speed below the rated speed is obtained by armature voltage control and
speeds above the rated speed are obtained by field control method.
Calculate;
(i) Motor terminal voltage & armature current for a speed of 450 rpm
(ii) Field winding voltage & armature current for a speed of 750 rpm

a. Briefly explain what you understand by regenerative braking in respect

of DC motors.
b. A 220V, 970 RPM, 100 A DC separately excited motor has an armature
resistance of 0.05 Ω. It is braked by plugging from an initial speed of
1000 RPM. Calculate:
(i) Resistance to be placed in the armature circuit to limit braking
current to twice the full load value.
(ii) Braking torque
(iii) Torque when the speed has fallen to zero
c. A 220 V, 200 A, 800 rpm separately excited DC motor has an armature
resistance of 0.06 Ω. The motor armature is fed from a variable voltage
source with an internal resistance of 0.04 Ω. Calculate internal voltage of
the variable source when the motor is operating in regenerative braking
at 80% of the rated motor torque and 600 rpm.

ASSIGNMENT

a. The Buck boost regulator shown in figure below has an input voltage
of Vs=12V. The duty cycle is 0.25 and the switching frequency is 25 kHz.
The inductance L=150μH and filter capacitance C=220μF. The average
load current Ia=1.25A. Determine
(i) The average output voltage, Vo
(ii) Peak-to-peak ripple current of inductor, ∆𝐼
(iii) Peak current of the transistor, Ip

b. The OCC of the generator of a Ward-Leonard set is as shown in Table

below
Field Amps 1.4 2.2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Armature volts 212 320 397 472 522 560 587 609

The generator is connected to a shunt motor, the field of which is

separately-excited at 550 V. If the speed of motor is 300 rpm at 550 V,
when giving 485 kW at 95.5% efficiency, determine the excitation of the
generator to give a speed of 180 rpm at the same torque. The resistance
of the motor circuit = 0.01Ω, resistance of the motor field=60Ω and the
resistance of the generator armature circuit=0.01Ω. Ignore the effect of
armature reaction and variation of the core factor and the windage losses
of the motor.
c. A 220 V compensated shunt motor drives a 700 N-m torque load when
running at 1200 rpm. The combined armature compensating winding and
interpole resistance is 0.008Ω and shunt field resistance is 55Ω. The
motor efficiency is 90%. Calculate the value of the dynamic braking
resistor that will be capable of 375 N-m torque at 1050 rpm. The windage
and friction losses may be assumed to remain constant at both speeds.
