Performance & Dispatch
Basic performance engineer course (1/2)
REF: XG02

Description

The course is designed for airlines' aircraft Performance Engineers, who are in charge of the performance expertise and
who need to know how to handle the performance software (PEP) provided by Airbus in order to make performance
computations, to produce documentation or to carry out specific studies. This course, which is not an ab-initio course but
a “transition” course, aims at bringing to performance engineers the knowledge of aircraft systems and limitations,
knowledge of the operational documentation, knowledge of the performance calculation techniques as well as the
knowledge of general performance and regulation.

Theory and regulation

The purpose of this module is to provide the trainees with information on theory and regulation for a better
understanding of Airbus aircraft performance. This module is conducted with stand-up lectures and practical
computerized exercises. The topics covered are: Atmosphere, Temperature, Altimetry, Speeds, Take-off, Cruise, Landing,
Flight Planning, and ACN/PCN.

Performance Engineer’s Programs

The purpose of this module is to learn how Airbus Performance Engineer’s Programs (PEP) can fulfil Airlines operational
needs. The course is based on practical use of the PEP software covering: Airplane Flight Manual (AFM): computerized
flight manual calculations (take off, landing, drift-down, certified speeds).
Take-off and Landing Optimization (TLO): Runway analysis with information about any special conditions, such as runway
state or system inoperative.
In Flight Performance Programme (IFP): production of Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM) type charts, detailed
calculations for each flight phase (climb, cruise, descent, holding), aerodynamic and engine parameter calculations. Flight
Planning Programme (FLIP): fuel and payload calculation for a given route and given flight conditions.
Fuel Temperature Prediction (FTP): anticipation of fuel freezing procedures on a given route
Performance Monitoring Programme (APM): comparison between actual aircraft performance and book level
performance, so as to detect any engine or aerodynamic degradation.
Operational Flight Path Programme (OFP): Take-off and approach Flight Path calculations (all engines or one engine out)
with graphical visualisation of the trajectory.
Noise Level Computation Programme (NLC): Take-off and Approach noise calculations at a given point, or noise level
contour calculation.
Noise Exposure Computation Programme (NEX): noise disturbance calculation of airline’s operations at a given airport.

(classroom seats limitation, number of seats available to be confirmed when the course is booked).
The course focuses on the differences between A380 and A350 and avoids to attend a full course again.
The course can be performed at the end of a full course, so the trainees get the dual competence on A350

Theoretical modules will be delivered during the first day of training to cover:
• The Safety Management System (SMS) and FDA concepts (e.g. hazard identification, risk assessment, risk mitigation)
• The recorders architectures and the conversion of the recorded data into readable information within an FDA software.
AirFASE software and a training database are used during the two last days to:
• Provide the trainees with techniques in order to investigate a database (from a single occurrence or from statistics)
• Explain how these techniques should help at conducting an FDA process integrated within the operator’s SMS.

Threat & Error management course
REF: XG18

Description

This course aims at providing the necessary knowledge and skills to pilots who will have to conduct flight observation
following the principles of the Threat & Error Management (TEM). Such observation, also known as “Line Observation
Monitoring”, is not a line check and should be de-correlated with TRI/TRE activities. This course is designed for experienced
pilots (captains or first officers) but usually without any management responsibilities in order to avoid conflicts of interest
between the reports that should be issued and their management position.

• The first day of training is dedicated to theoretical modules covering the following topics: TEM concept and TEM within
the Safety Management System (SMS), TEM in flight operation, and Observation methodology (with workshops)
• The following days (2nd, 3rd or 4th) are dedicated to practice observations on actual commercial flights
• The last day is dedicated to a debriefing of the performed observations (and not a debriefing of the flight). Each trainee
will present the result of his observation and then the instructor will debrief on the methodology
Then the team of pilots trained as “observer” can train other pilots as “observer” depending on the development needs of
the “Line Observation Monitoring” activity within the Airline.

Notes:
the actual observations, the Airbus TEM instructor will act on board as observer on a cockpit jump seat. An Airline
ticket - During will have to be issued for each leg. Depending on the cockpit configuration trainees will either be on a jump
seat as an observer or on pilot seat as PM. Each Airbus TEM instructor is able to perform a maximum of 4 legs per day.
For SAMS customers, a specific TEM training has been developed covering the same main features but adapted to the tool.

Aircraft applicability

Pre-requisites

• English Language ICAO Proficiency Rating of 4, 5 or 6

• Fluency in English (able to write, read and communicate at an adequately understandable level in English language)

Risk Assessment in Practice - Runway Excursion
REF: ????

Description

A Safety Management System (SMS), as mandated by FAA, EASA and ICAO regulations, provides a structured management
approach to control safety risks in operations. To achieve this, the SMS requires a robust process for risk management,
including advanced strategies for assessing risk (2nd pillar of the SMS, as per ICAO).
The concepts associated with Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (HIRA) are all simple on paper, but experience shows
that doing it in practice can be rather challenging.

Going beyond theory, this workshop will provide you with one risk assessment methodology for runway excursions which is
already in use by more and more operators.
Why focus on runway excursions? Because it is one of the major key risk areas as identified by regulators and IATA (25% of
all accidents during the last 5 years, as per IATA Safety Report 2019).

Key reasons to choose this course:

• Review basic concepts of risk assessment
• Go from theory to practice by learning and applying a methodology for runway excursion risk assessment
• Acquire practical knowledge to tackle one of the major key risk areas in the industry
• NAVBLUE relies on industry experts to find and provide solutions to help you improve safety of your operation

Target audience:
• Safety Managers and Risk Managers advising Accountable Managers
• Safety Analysts, Safety Specialists and Flight Data Analysts responsible for conducting risk assessments
• Civil Aviation Authority Auditors and other Safety Auditors looking for risk assessment tools
