In this lesson, you’ll learn:


• The questions of Speaking Part 1 are usually of general topics, e.g.
family, hobbies, studies.
• Part 1 tests your ability to give full answers and to give extra
information on general topics with descriptions or explanations.

I. Warm-up
3 minutes

There are five questions listed below. Can you match question
1-5 with the correct topic a-e?

1. Are you a student? a. Your country 3

2. Describe your family. b. Your family


3. Which country are you from? c. Your hobbies
4. What do you do? d. Your studies
5. Do you do any sports? e. Your work

Question: Which part in IELTS speaking test may contain these


questions? Make a guess!
TI: Ask S to read the question and match the questions with

II. Speaking Part 1: Questions 3 minutes

The complete IELTS Speaking test takes 11-14 minutes, and Part 1
usually takes about 4-5 minutes. The examiner asks questions and
you give answers.
Part 1: Introduction and interview
• First of all, the examiner introduces himself/herself to you. The 4

examiner will also ask you to confirm your identity.


• Then the interview begins. The examiner asks you questions on
general topics, e.g. family, hobbies, studies.
• Part 1 tests your ability to give full answers and to give extra
information on general topics with descriptions or explanations.

The questions of Speaking part 1 are usually of general topics,


e.g. family, hobbies, studies. There are three types of frequently
asked question types listed below.

Type 1: Your study or work 5

Are you a student or a worker?


Why did you choose your major?
Is your major/job popular in China these days?

TI: Explain to S about the frequently asked question types. Then, read the

II. Speaking Part 1: Questions 4 minutes

Type 2: Your hometown or family

Where are you from?


Is it a big city or small town?

Type 3: Your hobbies and interests

What do you like to do in your spare time?


How would you spend your holidays or weekends?

TI: Read the questions and choose one or two questions

Read and listen to an examiner’s instruction in IELTS Speaking Part 1.
